Meet only if you feel ready, involve a trusted person in the plan, and make the first meeting short and public. A familiar voice or gaming profile does not verify someone’s real-world identity. If you are under 18, tell a caregiver before making any plan; do not meet without their knowledge or accompaniment.
Should you meet an online gaming friend?
That decision is yours. Many sessions together can make someone feel familiar, but they do not establish who that person is offline. Online profiles can be false, and requests for secrecy, urgency, or a private meeting are reasons to pause—not obligations to comply.

The FBI’s guidance for young people is direct: “Don’t meet an online friend in person without your caregiver knowing or going with you.” It also says that “No” is an acceptable answer to any request. If you are a minor, involve a caregiver before discussing or arranging a meeting. If you are an adult, choose someone you trust to know the plan and be available.

What should you check before agreeing?
- Take your time. Do not agree because of pressure, guilt, a threat, a valuable gift, or a demand to keep the meeting secret.
- Look for consistency, not proof. If you are comfortable, ask for a recent photo or suggest a live video call. An Garda Síochána recommends these as precautions, but neither proves a person’s identity.
- Save relevant details. Keep the person’s profile name and relevant messages. eSafety recommends taking a screenshot of the profile and sharing it with a trusted person before meeting.
- Protect personal information. Do not share your home address, school, workplace, regular routes, passwords, or financial details. Do not publish your live location; share the meeting location only with a trusted contact.
- Be alert to warning signs. eSafety identifies rapid closeness, requests for private information, high-value gifts, secrecy, moving to a more private platform or video chat, and requests for sexual content as concerning behaviors. The FBI also flags requests for money or images, gifts, pressure, and hidden identities. These signs warrant caution; they are not, by themselves, proof of a specific offense.
Where should you meet, and how do you get home safely?
For a first meeting, choose a busy public place where other people or staff are present, such as a café or shopping centre. Stay in public, and prefer daylight if practical. A venue is not inherently safe; the point is to avoid isolation and make it easier to leave.

Tell a trusted person who you are meeting, the person’s profile name, the location, when you expect to arrive and return, and what they should do if you miss a check-in. Share your live location if appropriate and comfortable. Arrange your own transport both ways rather than relying on the person you are meeting for a ride, and keep a backup way home.
- Keep your phone charged and accessible; a power bank is optional.
- Make the first meeting simple and short.
- Agree on a check-in time and a response plan with your trusted contact.
- Decide in advance that you can leave early without negotiating.
What should you do during the meeting?
Stay in the public place, keep control of your belongings and transport, and follow the plan you shared. Check in with your trusted person as agreed. If the other person tries to change the location to somewhere private, pressures you to hide the meeting, or interferes with your ability to leave, end the meeting and move to a staffed or public area.

Feeling uneasy is enough reason to leave. You do not have to justify cutting the meeting short. If you face immediate danger, contact local emergency services; emergency numbers differ by country.

What if your gaming friend wants to keep the meeting secret?
Do not agree to secrecy. A request to hide the meeting from a caregiver or trusted person is a warning sign, especially when combined with urgency, gifts, pressure, or requests for personal details or images. Stop planning, tell someone you trust, and use the game or platform’s block and report tools if appropriate.

If a player has made you uncomfortable or targeted you, preserve relevant messages and screenshots rather than deleting the conversation. The FBI advises young people to keep communications and screenshots if targeted. Ask a trusted adult or other appropriate support person for help.

A child who expects automatic punishment or loss of game access may be less likely to ask for help. Make clear that safety comes first and that they can tell you if someone pressures or frightens them.

- Know about any proposed in-person meeting and be involved before plans are made.
- Review the game’s privacy and communication settings together. Where available, limit unknown friend requests, chat, visibility of personal information, and gift sharing.
- Use age-appropriate supervision. eSafety recommends that children and younger teens avoid risky features such as private messaging, gifts, content sharing, or livestreaming.
- Discuss rules for contact and, where appropriate, restrict chat to known friends. The FTC advises parents to help children block or report players who ask for personal information.
- Show children how to block and report players, and encourage them to tell a trusted adult and keep a record if someone makes them uncomfortable.
