How to stay safe if you encounter a shark while swimming or surfing

Leave the water calmly and promptly if you see a shark, and follow lifeguard or beach-authority instructions. The best protection is situational: swim with other people near shore in daylight, avoid fishing and baitfish activity, and do not enter water where sharks are known to be present. If a shark attack is actually underway, the Florida Museum of Natural History advises an active defense and an attempt to escape; that is different from the response to a distant sighting.

How can I avoid being bitten by a shark?

No action makes a shark encounter impossible to predict, but you can reduce exposure by choosing safer conditions and leaving promptly when warnings change. Treat local information as the first safety control: beach closures, shark alerts, lifeguard whistles, patrol-boat instructions and posted signs reflect conditions that can change during the day.

Check the beach before entering

  • Read the beach noticeboard or official beach-service messages and ask a lifeguard about current sightings, closures and surf conditions.
  • Do not enter if authorities say sharks are present. The Florida Museum’s swimmer guidance states: “Do not enter the water if sharks are known to be present and evacuate the water if sharks are seen while there.”
  • Recheck warnings after storms, unusual baitfish activity or a reported sighting. A beach that was open earlier may not remain a safe choice.

Swim with a buddy and stay close enough for help

Use a buddy or group rather than swimming alone. Keep the group together and remain close enough to shore, a staffed lifeguard station or a clearly accessible exit that assistance can reach you quickly. This is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee that a shark will avoid a group.

Choose daylight and good visibility

Avoid darkness, twilight, dawn and dusk. Low light makes it harder for people to see a shark and for a shark to distinguish a person from other animals. Be especially cautious in murky water, heavy surf and strong currents. The Florida Museum notes that pounding surf, currents and poor visibility can contribute to mistaken identity in some hit-and-run bites.

Stay away from feeding activity

Do not swim or surf near active fishing, fish-cleaning stations, chumming, baitfish schools or seabirds repeatedly diving into the water. Diving birds can indicate baitfish below the surface. Avoid water with known sewage or other effluent, and leave if fish or marine animals begin behaving as though they are feeding intensely.

Avoid places that concentrate animals or make escape difficult

Use extra caution around sandbars, steep drop-offs, channels and areas where currents carry prey. Avoid unnecessary distance from shore, especially when conditions make a quick return difficult. If the water becomes cloudier, the surf strengthens or visibility deteriorates, end the session rather than trying to continue on the original plan.

Keep your movements controlled

Limit excessive splashing. Do not deliberately imitate injured prey, chase fish or create a feeding-like disturbance. Normal swimming cannot be made perfectly silent, but calm, purposeful movement avoids adding an avoidable signal in a place where prey may be present.

Do not assume dolphins mean sharks are absent

Dolphins and porpoises may share the same food sources as sharks. Their presence is not a safety clearance. Continue to follow beach warnings and the conditions around you.

Handle cuts sensibly without overclaiming about menstruation

Do not enter the water with an open wound when you can postpone the activity. Florida Museum pages differ in how they frame menstrual blood: the practical advice is to avoid swimming with an open wound, while its FAQ says sharks have not been shown to be attracted to human blood. There is no sound basis here for claiming that menstruation itself attracts sharks. If you are bleeding, choose a safer activity and follow medical advice for the injury.

Does sunscreen attract sharks?

The Florida Museum FAQ reports no scientific evidence that sharks are affected by sunscreen. Sunscreen is still important for preventing sun damage; do not skip it because of a shark rumor. Sunscreen is not a substitute for checking warnings, choosing suitable conditions or leaving when a shark is seen.

What should I do if I see a shark?

A sighting is a reason to leave, not an invitation to investigate. Whether the shark is close or far away, treat the observation as a signal to end the water activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stay calm enough to move deliberately. Avoid frantic splashing or diving toward the animal. Keep the shark in view when you can do so without turning an exit into a prolonged observation.
  2. Signal your group. Use a clear voice or agreed signal so nearby swimmers or surfers know to leave. Do not separate to get a better look.
  3. Move toward the nearest safe exit. Swim or paddle steadily toward shore, a boat, a dock or a lifeguard position. Use the route that limits time in the water rather than the route that takes you closest to the shark.
  4. Do not approach or harass the shark. Do not touch, feed, chase, film at close range or throw objects at it. Harassment can change an animal’s behavior and keeps you exposed longer.
  5. Follow lifeguard and beach-staff directions. If a lifeguard orders an evacuation, leave immediately and continue until staff say the area is reopened.
  6. Alert staff after you are out. Report the location, approximate size, direction of travel and time, along with any unusual baitfish or fishing activity. Do not re-enter to confirm whether the shark is still there.

The sighting procedure is not the same as an attack response. The Florida Museum’s advice to resist is emergency guidance for an attack in progress, not a reason to confront a shark that has been seen at a distance.

If a shark attacks: use an active defense and escape

The Florida Museum says, “If you are attacked by a shark, a proactive response is advised.” Its attack guidance page was last updated July 15, 2019; keep the attribution in mind because this is institution guidance for an emergency, not a guarantee of outcome.

  1. Resist rather than going limp. If the shark is making contact or attempting to bite, defend yourself actively.
  2. Use an inanimate object if one is available. The Florida Museum advises striking the shark’s nose with an inanimate object when possible. A surfboard, board leash attachment, camera housing or other object already within reach may serve; do not delay an escape to search for one.
  3. Protect yourself with the sensitive areas identified by the guidance. If you are bitten or cannot get away, the page identifies the eyes and gill openings as sensitive areas. Use purposeful strikes or pressure when those areas are reachable.
  4. Get out of the water as soon as an opening appears. Move toward shore, a boat, a board or another stable exit. Keep defending yourself if the shark continues contact, but do not remain to observe it.
  5. Activate emergency help immediately. Shout for assistance, signal lifeguards and call local emergency services once you are in a position to do so. Have someone direct responders to the exact access point.

This advice applies to an attack, not to a shark that is simply visible. A distant sighting calls for a calm exit; an attack calls for active resistance and escape.

Why shark encounters do not all look the same

The Florida Museum’s FAQ describes three patterns of unprovoked bite. Recognizing the categories helps explain why a single scripted response cannot cover every situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Encounter pattern How it is described Conditions and implications
Hit-and-run A bite occurs, often near a beach, and the shark leaves. Pounding surf, strong currents and murky water can contribute to mistaken identity in some cases. Exit, alert staff and seek emergency care for any injury.
Sneak bite A person in deeper water is bitten without first seeing the shark. Visibility and distance from shore can delay recognition and assistance. Staying with a buddy and remaining near a practical exit matter.
Bump-and-bite The shark circles or bumps a person before biting. This is an attack context, not a sighting to watch. Use the active-defense and escape guidance if contact begins.

These labels describe reported patterns; they do not let a swimmer diagnose a shark’s intent with certainty. If the animal’s behavior is unclear, prioritize leaving the water and following staff instructions.

What to do after you reach shore

For a sighting without injury

  • Tell a lifeguard, beach patrol or harbor authority where and when you saw the shark.
  • Give practical details: your position, the animal’s direction, approximate distance and whether fish, birds or fishing activity were nearby.
  • Stay out until local authorities say the water is open. Do not rely on the shark disappearing from view as proof that conditions are safe.

For any bite or suspected contact

  • Call local emergency services or direct a bystander to call while trained responders are summoned.
  • Tell responders that a shark may have been involved and identify the fastest water-access point.
  • Do not return to the water to retrieve equipment or look for the animal.

Severe bleeding, shock and other injuries require professional emergency care. A person who appears stable can still need urgent assessment, so do not treat a small-looking puncture as proof that medical attention is unnecessary.

Do personal shark deterrents make swimming safe?

No consumer deterrent is established by the sources here as dependable protection. NOAA Fisheries’ 2026 strategy says deterrent performance may vary by species and conditions and that effectiveness is being evaluated through a meta-analysis. The agency notes that proposed approaches include electromagnetic devices and various metals; that statement describes proposals, not an endorsement or a safety guarantee.

For a decision about any device, separate four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Evidence: Has effectiveness been demonstrated for the shark species, water conditions and activity you face, or is it still under evaluation?
  • Coverage: Does it protect only the device user, or could other swimmers remain exposed?
  • Conditions: Does it work in surf, low visibility, strong current and the distances involved in your activity?
  • Behavior: Could believing the device is reliable make you ignore a closure, stay in the water longer or approach an animal?

A device should never override a beach closure, a lifeguard’s order or the basic controls of daylight, group swimming, shore proximity and leaving after a sighting.

What about nets and other public beach measures?

Public infrastructure is different from personal equipment. The Florida Museum says exclusion nets are not fully effective, can kill or entangle other marine animals, cost a great deal to operate and work only in low-energy, non-surf zones. They are therefore a location-specific management choice, not a universal shield for swimmers or surfers.

When evaluating a beach’s safety program, distinguish between warning and response systems, physical exclusion, patrols and environmental monitoring. Ask what conditions the measure was designed for and what happens when surf, currents or wildlife activity exceed those conditions. Personal behavior remains necessary even where public measures are present.

How common are shark bites?

Risk context should inform decisions without minimizing the danger of an individual encounter. The Florida Museum of Natural History’s 2022 FAQ says more than 500 shark species are known and around 30 have been reported to bite humans. It identifies white, tiger and bull sharks as associated with most unprovoked bites and says around a dozen species are considered particularly dangerous when encountered. Those are figures and classifications from that 2022 page, not a new 2026 measurement of every species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Florida Museum’s current International Shark Attack File page, accessed in 2026, describes more than 6,800 individual investigations in its cumulative database. That is a total number of investigations, not an annual bite count. The same page says global unprovoked bites returned to near-average levels in 2025 after a sharp reduction in 2024, without giving an exact 2025 number in the available summary.

An older FAQ also presents a one-in-3.7-million risk estimate and an average of 70 unprovoked bites per year, but those figures are not clearly dated there and may not represent current estimates. They should not be used as current probabilities without the original calculation and date. Whatever the statistical context, a local warning or a shark you can see is an immediate, specific reason to leave.

A practical pre-water checklist

  • Have I checked today’s beach, lifeguard and shark-sighting information?
  • Is the water open, daylight-lit and clear enough for me to see nearby activity?
  • Am I with a buddy or group, and can we reach shore or assistance quickly?
  • Are there fishing lines, baitfish, diving seabirds, feeding activity, sewage or other effluent nearby?
  • Are surf, currents, sandbars or drop-offs making an exit harder?
  • Do I have an open wound or another reason to postpone entering?
  • Do everyone in the group know the exit signal and who will contact a lifeguard or emergency services?

If any answer raises concern, choose a different location, wait for better conditions or stay out of the water.

The simple decision rule

Before entering: follow local warnings, use daylight, stay with others near shore and avoid places where prey or fishing activity is concentrated. When a shark is seen: leave calmly and promptly, do not approach or harass it, and notify staff. When an attack is underway: resist actively using the Florida Museum’s emergency guidance, create an opportunity to escape and summon professional help immediately.
