How to Stay Safe Around Bison in Yellowstone and Other Parks

In Yellowstone, stay at least 25 yards (23 meters) from every bison at all times. Never walk closer for a photograph. If a bison enters that space, turn around and go the other way; if it approaches, back away until you have restored the distance. On a road, remain inside your vehicle, drive slowly, and wait for the animal to move. These are Yellowstone National Park’s instructions, not a universal rule for every park, so check the destination’s current official guidance before a trip elsewhere.

How close can you get to bison in Yellowstone?

The answer is 25 yards (23 meters), minimum, at all times. Yellowstone National Park’s official safety guidance says visitors must not approach a bison to take a photo. A bison that looks calm is still a wild animal capable of moving faster than a person can react.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Distance is measured from the animal, not from a trail edge, viewing platform, or another visitor. If the bison changes position and reduces the gap, you must change yours too. Turn around and walk away; do not wait for it to pass close by, and do not move around it to keep a preferred view.

The rule also applies when you are using binoculars or a camera. Optical equipment lets you see detail from farther away; it does not make approaching safe or lawful.

Why bison require more caution than their calm appearance suggests

Yellowstone National Park states that bison have injured more people in the park than any other animal. In a May 7, 2025 release, the National Park Service (NPS) also said bison are unpredictable, defend their space when threatened, and can run three times faster than humans. The release does not describe how that speed figure was measured, so treat it as the NPS’s published warning rather than a visitor risk calculation.

Large size and dark coloration can make an animal’s movement difficult to judge, especially at night or in poor visibility. A bison does not need to make a long charge for a close encounter to become dangerous. A few steps by the animal can erase the separation a visitor thought was adequate.

NPS reported that a 47-year-old visitor suffered minor injuries after approaching a bison too closely in the Lake Village area on May 4, 2025. Emergency medical personnel treated the visitor, and the incident was under investigation when the release was published. NPS described it as the first reported bison-injury incident of 2025 at that point, and listed two incidents in 2024 and one in 2023. Those are reported incident counts, not a probability of injury or a trend estimate.

The practical lesson is simple: do not use an animal’s apparent stillness, a previous uneventful encounter, or a crowd’s confidence as evidence that a closer approach is safe. The park’s warning applies every time, including when the bison is grazing, lying down, or facing away.

What to do when you are on foot

Keep a wide, continuously monitored buffer

Start with at least 25 yards (23 meters), then keep watching the animal as you move. Leave extra room when terrain, vegetation, other people, or your route makes it hard to turn around quickly. The safest response to a bison that is walking toward you is to increase distance immediately, not to wait and see whether it stops.

  1. Stop trying to get closer, including for a photograph.
  2. Turn around and walk away in the opposite direction. If the animal is already close, back away while maintaining awareness of its position.
  3. Continue until the full 25-yard (23-meter) separation is restored and the animal is no longer changing its behavior because of you.
  4. Do not surround, crowd, or cut across the animal’s path. Choose a route that lets it move freely.

Yellowstone’s wildlife guidance says to back away when an animal moves closer. It also says the safest and often best wildlife view is from inside a car. If you cannot maintain the required separation on foot, return to your vehicle or another route rather than trying to hold your ground near the animal.

Walking away is not a retreat to postpone until the bison looks directly at you. A visitor who keeps taking photographs, waits for a better angle, or stands in the animal’s line of travel can cause the bison to alter its behavior. That is the point to leave, even if the animal has not displayed a dramatic warning sign.

Recognizing a bison warning and responding to a charge

Yellowstone lists several behaviors that indicate a visitor is too close and that a charge is imminent:

  • Bluff charging
  • Head bobbing while staring
  • Pawing
  • Bellowing
  • Raising the tail

Do not interpret a bluff charge as harmless entertainment. When you see these signs, walk or run away immediately, increasing the distance between you and the bison.

If the bison follows, Yellowstone instructs visitors to spray bear spray while moving away and to seek cover behind nearby trees or cars. Keep moving away as you deploy the spray; do not stop to film the animal or to retrieve a better camera angle. The park’s guidance does not say to climb, hide in a particular structure, or pretend to be dead, so those actions should not be substituted for the published instructions.

Bear spray is an emergency deterrent, not permission to approach wildlife. Carrying it does not change the 25-yard rule, and you should know how your canister works before entering the backcountry. Keep it accessible rather than buried in a pack so it can be used while you are moving away. If you are with a group, warn companions clearly and avoid running toward other visitors or into the animal’s route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A warning behavior is also a cue to end the viewing session. Once you have reached safety, do not return immediately for another look or assume the bison has “calmed down.” Give it room to continue moving without people converging around it.

When bison are on a Yellowstone road

A road encounter is different from a walking encounter. Yellowstone’s instructions are to stay in the vehicle, drive slowly, and wait for the bison to move. Do not honk and do not drive aggressively toward an animal to make it clear the roadway.

  1. Remain inside the vehicle with doors and windows secured.
  2. Reduce speed well before reaching the animal and leave room for it to move.
  3. Stop or creep forward only as needed, waiting patiently for the bison to clear the road.
  4. Never honk, rev the engine, or steer toward the animal.
  5. If you want to watch, use a designated pullout. Do not stop in the travel lane or block traffic.

At night or in poor visibility, take extra care because bison are large but can be difficult to see against the road and landscape. Slow down early, expect an animal to be closer than it first appears, and avoid sudden maneuvers that could endanger occupants or other drivers.

If you are already in a pullout and bison approach the area, do not get out for a closer view. Stay in the vehicle and allow the animal an unobstructed route.

Patience is part of the road rule. A bison may pause, turn, or walk along the roadway before leaving it. Waiting is safer than trying to influence its movement with noise or a vehicle. If several cars arrive, keep the pullout and roadway usable rather than creating a roadside crowd.

On foot versus in a vehicle: the correct response

Situation Primary action What to avoid
Walking near a bison Keep at least 25 yards (23 meters) away; turn around or back away if it approaches. Approaching for a photo, waiting for it to pass close, or circling around it.
Bison on a road while you are driving Stay in the vehicle, slow down, and wait for the animal to move. Honking, driving aggressively toward it, or stopping where you block traffic.
A bison displays warning behavior Walk or run away immediately; if it follows, use bear spray while moving away and seek cover behind nearby trees or cars. Stopping to record video or treating a bluff charge as a performance.

The distance rule and road rule solve different problems. A vehicle provides separation during a road crossing; it does not justify getting out on the shoulder or approaching an animal from a pullout.

Watch wildlife without moving closer

Yellowstone recommends binoculars or a telephoto lens so visitors can see wildlife from a safe distance. The park recommends a telephoto lens with a focal length of 300mm or greater for adequate reach. That recommendation concerns viewing capability, not a revised approach distance.

Option Portability Equipment requirement Ease of use Best fit
Binoculars Compact and quick to share between people No camera required Point and look; works for observing movement and behavior Visitors who want a simple, lightweight viewing aid
Telephoto lens (300mm or greater recommended by Yellowstone) Usually heavier and bulkier Requires a compatible camera body and familiarity with its controls Needs focusing and camera handling, but can record distant detail Visitors who already use interchangeable-lens cameras

Neither tool makes a close approach safe. Keep the same 25-yard (23-meter) separation while looking through glass, and lower the device if you need to check your route or the animal’s behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most visitors, binoculars are the simpler purchase: they are portable, require no camera body, and let companions share the view. A telephoto lens makes sense for someone who already carries a compatible camera and wants recorded distant detail. Choose based on portability, existing equipment, and the kind of viewing you enjoy—not on the hope of getting physically closer.

Do not interfere with an animal’s path

Yellowstone’s visitor guidance says to move away if an animal approaches or changes its behavior because of a person’s presence. The park’s brochure also tells visitors not to surround, crowd, or disrupt an animal’s path. This matters even when an animal is not charging: a group that blocks both sides of a trail or road can leave the bison with no comfortable way to move.

Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.

Wildlife viewing should therefore include an exit route for the animal. Keep groups spread out only enough to leave open space, avoid standing between a bison and water, calves, cover, or the direction it is traveling, and yield rather than forcing it to detour.

Yellowstone states that willfully remaining near or approaching wildlife within any distance that disturbs or displaces it is illegal. A visitor can violate that principle without touching an animal or crossing a marked barrier. If your presence changes its behavior, increase the distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That principle applies to photography groups as well as solo visitors. Do not position yourself on one side while companions occupy the other, and do not ask approaching people to stand still so you can preserve a composition. Leave a clear corridor and let the animal choose its route.

Planning a safer Yellowstone wildlife stop

Before leaving the vehicle

  • Identify the animal and estimate a route that preserves at least 25 yards (23 meters).
  • Check whether other visitors, vehicles, or terrain could block your retreat.
  • Keep bear spray accessible if you are carrying it, rather than buried in a pack.
  • Decide where you can return to a vehicle or other cover without crossing the bison’s path.

While observing

  • Use binoculars or a telephoto lens instead of closing the gap.
  • Keep watching the animal, not only the viewfinder or phone screen.
  • Leave as soon as the bison approaches, stares, bobs its head, paws, bellows, raises its tail, or otherwise changes behavior because of you.
  • Keep trails, roads, and pullouts open for other visitors and for the animal.

When leaving

  • Turn around early enough that you can walk away without running into another group.
  • On a road, re-enter the vehicle before the bison is close and wait for a clear route.
  • Do not reverse into traffic or stop in a travel lane to preserve a view.

Brief everyone in your party before approaching a viewing area. Agree that any person may call for an immediate retreat, and keep children close enough to move with the group. A plan made before the animal is near is easier to follow than instructions shouted during a charge.

What “other parks” means for this advice

The 25-yard (23-meter) rule and the response instructions in this guide are verified for Yellowstone. They should not be presented as the legal wording for every national park, state park, wildlife refuge, or Canadian park. Boundaries, species, seasonal closures, and local regulations can differ.

Before visiting another destination, open that park’s current official wildlife-safety page and confirm:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The required minimum distance from bison or other large wildlife
  • Whether the distance is stated in yards, meters, or both
  • Rules for approaching, photographing, feeding, or blocking an animal
  • What the park instructs visitors to do during a charge or road encounter
  • Any seasonal, trail-specific, or vehicle-specific restrictions

If local guidance is less specific, use the conservative Yellowstone approach—stay well back, give the animal a clear path, and leave when it changes behavior—but cite and follow the destination’s own current rules.
