Leo Notenboom’s April 13, 2006, account of staying connected on a business trip relied on Wi-Fi, mobile data, remote access, VPN, online fax, and forwarded phone calls. Its fax-by-email idea still describes a service category, but the named providers and the travel conditions are historical—not current recommendations.
What Leo Notenboom used on the road
In his Ask Leo! article published April 13, 2006, Notenboom described returning from a week-long business trip during which he used Wi-Fi, a cell data plan, remote access, and a VPN to stay connected. He also explained how he handled faxing and calls without relying on hotel phone charges.

Faxes by email and web
Notenboom’s online fax service delivered incoming faxes as PDF attachments and let him send documents by uploading them. He named MaxEmail, but the article is a snapshot of his setup in 2006; it does not establish whether that service or its features remain available today. The workflow depended on an internet connection.
Calls forwarded to home
He also had a toll-free number from AccessLine forwarded to his home. He said he used it because he disliked hotel long-distance charges, describing his own experience and rationale at the time. That account is not evidence of current hotel calling policies or rates.

What the story does—and does not—say about travel connectivity
The article treats internet access as essential to its online fax workflow. It also mentions concerns about cellular coverage and whether a connection would support voice over IP (VoIP). Those are the author’s concerns in the travel context of 2006, not current measurements of cellular coverage, hotel Wi-Fi, or VoIP quality.
The enduring practical lesson is to check that a communication service works over the connection you expect to have. If faxing matters, confirm that your service supports the way you plan to send and receive documents, and identify an alternative connection before travel. The article does not test modern networks or establish that a particular connection method is more reliable.

Online fax services today
Online fax remains a service category, but the available evidence does not support a best-service verdict or an independent comparison. Current feature pages from Fax.Plus and MetroFax describe online sending and receipt; these are vendor claims, and their current terms should be checked directly.

Notenboom also named AccessLine for call forwarding. Its current-facing feature page describes web fax and calling features, but the older documentation contains legacy details that should not be taken as current plan terms. Neither the 2006 article nor the reviewed service pages establish that Notenboom’s exact arrangements are available now.
