If a display-driver crash prevents normal startup, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to launch Safe Mode, then roll back or update the driver. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while choosing Restart. If Windows never reaches sign-in, trigger WinRE through failed-start recovery and open Startup Settings. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state—it does not repair the driver by itself.
The right route depends on where startup stops. Reaching the sign-in screen means you can enter recovery without interrupting power. A machine that crashes earlier may need Windows to detect failed starts and open Automatic Repair. Once you are in Safe Mode, change one thing at a time, restart normally, and check whether the original symptom returns.

Choose the recovery route that matches what you can see
| What happens when you start the PC? | Use this route | What you will need |
|---|---|---|
| The sign-in screen appears | Power > hold Shift and select Restart, then open Startup Settings | Your account password (Safe Mode does not accept a PIN or biometrics) |
| Windows crashes or restarts before sign-in | Enter WinRE after failed starts, or trigger Automatic Repair by interrupting startup twice | Possibly the BitLocker recovery key |
| The desktop is usable but display settings are broken | Try Startup Settings’ Enable low-resolution video | No special hardware or software |
Microsoft documents these Startup Settings choices for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 in Windows startup settings. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the recovery steps still apply to installed Windows 10 systems as well as Windows 11.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEntering Safe Mode does not require a graphics card, replacement monitor, recovery USB, or paid utility. A USB recovery drive can be useful for broader recovery or reinstall situations, but it is not a prerequisite for the procedure here. Do not add hardware changes while you are still determining whether the crash is caused by a driver, a display connection, or something else.

Start Safe Mode from the sign-in screen
This is the least disruptive method because it does not require deliberately powering off a running system.
- At the Windows sign-in screen, select the Power button.
- Hold Shift and select Restart. Keep holding Shift until the recovery menu appears.
- On Choose an option, select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options, then Startup Settings.
- Select Restart. The next screen lists numbered startup choices.
- Choose Safe Mode. Select Safe Mode with Networking only when you specifically need network access, such as downloading a driver from the PC maker.
When Windows asks you to sign in, use the account password. Safe Mode disables PIN and biometric sign-in, even if those methods work during a normal boot. Microsoft describes the sign-in limitation in Troubleshoot Problems Signing In to Windows.
Plain Safe Mode is the cleaner diagnostic choice because it loads fewer components. Networking adds network support and therefore more drivers and services. If you already have the correct driver package on local storage, use plain Safe Mode and avoid adding networking to the test. If you need to obtain support information or a driver online, choose the networking variant deliberately rather than assuming it is equivalent.

Let Windows open WinRE after failed starts
After repeated unsuccessful boots, Windows can automatically enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). When the recovery screen appears, select Advanced options, then follow:
- Troubleshoot
- Advanced options
- Startup Settings
- Restart
- Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Networking when required)
The WinRE overview and access conditions are documented by Microsoft in Windows recovery environment.
Recovery screens can look different on a desktop, laptop, or manufacturer-customized installation, but the relevant path remains the Startup Settings option. Read each screen rather than selecting a reset option just because it is prominent. Startup Settings is the targeted way to reach Safe Mode; reset and reinstall are substantially more disruptive.
Trigger Automatic Repair when recovery does not appear
Use forced shutdowns only when the computer cannot reach the normal sign-in or recovery menus. Interrupting startup can risk unsaved data and should not become a routine way to shut down Windows.
- Turn on the PC and wait for the Windows logo or the manufacturer’s logo.
- Hold the physical power button until the computer turns off.
- Turn it on again and repeat the forced shutdown when the logo appears.
- Start the PC a third time without interrupting it. Windows should display Automatic Repair.
- Select Advanced options, then open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Select Safe Mode from the numbered list.
If the device is managed by an employer or school, policy may restrict recovery choices; contact the organization’s IT support. An encrypted drive may request its BitLocker recovery key before WinRE allows certain actions. Microsoft explains these recovery-environment conditions at Windows recovery environment.

Perform the two interruptions only at the logo stage described above. If the first attempt opens recovery normally, stop there. Repeatedly cutting power can create additional startup problems and makes it harder to tell whether the original graphics failure has been resolved.
Understand what Safe Mode changes
Microsoft’s definition is precise: “Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers.” That reduced startup set helps you determine whether a third-party driver or startup component is involved. It does not prove that the graphics driver is the cause, and it does not automatically repair or reinstall anything.
- Windows loads a minimal driver and service set, so some display features, resolutions, and applications will be unavailable.
- A crash that disappears in Safe Mode points toward something loaded during a normal boot, but other causes—including hardware, cables, monitors, or another driver—remain possible.
- Safe Mode with Networking adds network components; use it only when needed because it loads more than plain Safe Mode.
- Safe Mode is a temporary startup choice. After you finish testing or changing the driver, restart normally so you can verify whether the regular driver stack works.
For the official description and Startup Settings choices, see Windows startup settings.
A successful Safe Mode boot is evidence, not a diagnosis. It tells you that Windows can run with a reduced startup set. It does not establish that the display adapter package alone is defective, because a monitor, cable, docking device, system update, or another startup component may be involved in the normal crash.
Safe Mode versus low-resolution video
| Startup Settings choice | Driver behavior | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safe Mode | Starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers | Isolating a crash that occurs during normal startup and accessing Device Manager | It is diagnostic; it does not fix the driver automatically |
| Safe Mode with Networking | Safe Mode plus network support | Obtaining a legitimate driver or support information when offline access is necessary | Loads additional networking components |
| Enable low-resolution video | Uses the current video driver, but with lower resolution and refresh-rate settings | Recovering from an unusable display configuration when Windows otherwise starts | It is not the same as Safe Mode and may not bypass a driver that crashes while loading |
Choose low-resolution video from Startup Settings when the problem looks like an incorrect resolution or refresh rate rather than a driver-loading crash. Microsoft lists this separate option in Windows startup settings.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: selecting low-resolution video and assuming the graphics driver has been excluded from the test. Low-resolution video keeps the current video driver and changes display settings. Safe Mode instead limits the files and drivers loaded during startup. If the driver itself crashes as it loads, low-resolution video may not help; if the desktop is merely outside a usable resolution or refresh rate, it may be the more direct option.
Use Device Manager to address the suspected graphics driver
1. Inspect the display adapter
- In Safe Mode, open Device Manager. You can search for it from the Start menu.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Note the adapter name and whether Windows shows a warning icon or an error in its properties.
Record the adapter name and what changed before the crash. That simple note helps you choose between rollback, update, update removal, or System Restore instead of trying unrelated fixes in succession.

2. Roll back a driver that changed immediately before the crashes
- Right-click the display adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if it is available, then follow the reason prompt.
- Restart Windows normally and test the workload that previously caused the crash.
Rollback is most appropriate when the failure began directly after a driver update. The button can be unavailable when Windows has no previous driver package to restore. An unavailable button is not proof that the current driver is correct; it only means this particular previous package is not available through Device Manager.
3. Update when rollback is unavailable or inappropriate
Use Device Manager’s driver-update option or the driver supplied through Windows Update or your computer’s manufacturer. Verify that the package matches your Windows edition and graphics hardware. If you need online access during this process, return to WinRE and choose Safe Mode with Networking; otherwise, download the correct package on another device and transfer it using approved media.
Prefer the update channel appropriate to the computer and adapter. Keep the timing in mind: if the crash began immediately after a Windows update rather than a graphics-driver update, removing that Windows update or using System Restore may be more relevant than installing another display package.

Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance covers inspecting and changing display drivers in Troubleshooting blank screens in Windows.
4. Restart and verify
Restart normally after the rollback or update. Check whether Windows reaches the desktop, whether the correct resolution returns, and whether the original application or game still triggers the crash. If the problem returns, record what changed and move to the next recovery level rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers without a plan.
Test the same condition that originally exposed the problem, but change only one variable at a time. A normal desktop boot followed by a failure in a particular application does not have the same meaning as a crash during every normal startup. Note whether the symptom is a blank screen, a restart, or an application-specific failure; that distinction helps determine whether to inspect hardware, updates, or the driver package next.
When the driver is not the whole problem
A Safe Mode result narrows the possibilities but does not identify a single cause. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting also recommends testing another monitor or cable. A loose connection, failed display, docking station, power problem, or graphics hardware fault can resemble a driver failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect a known-good monitor or cable, if available, and test one variable at a time.
- Disconnect unnecessary docks, adapters, and external displays while testing.
- If crashes occur even in Safe Mode, suspect a component that Safe Mode still uses or a hardware fault rather than only the normal display-driver package.
- If the machine is stable in Safe Mode but fails immediately after a normal boot, review recently installed drivers, updates, and startup software.
These checks are particularly useful when low-resolution video changes the symptom but does not eliminate it. A display configuration problem can improve at a lower resolution, while a failing cable or monitor can continue to produce intermittent blank screens. Test the simplest physical path first before making more system changes.

Escalate to Windows recovery options
Use the least disruptive option that matches the change you are trying to undo. Keep a backup of important files whenever Windows can still access them, and read the data-retention description on each screen before confirming.
| What changed? | Next option | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| A display-driver update immediately preceded the crash | Roll back the driver in Device Manager | Restores the previous driver when Windows retained it |
| A Windows update preceded the crash | Uninstall the recent update from WinRE recovery options | Removes the selected update; other changes remain |
| System files or settings changed and the restore points are suitable | System Restore | Rolls back system files and settings while keeping personal files; recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings may be affected |
| Windows remains unusable after less disruptive attempts | Reset or reinstall Windows | More disruptive; retention of files and applications depends on the option you select |
Microsoft details these choices, including update removal, System Restore, reset, and reinstall considerations, in Recovery options in Windows. BitLocker may require the recovery key before recovery tools can proceed.
System Restore is not a personal-file backup. It keeps personal files according to Microsoft’s description, but recently installed applications, drivers, updates, or settings may be affected. Reset and reinstall choices have different retention behavior, so read the specific option’s explanation and back up important files first whenever possible.

Do not keep interrupting startup indefinitely. Perform the two deliberate interruptions described above, then allow the third boot to open Automatic Repair. If WinRE still does not appear, use recovery media or contact the device manufacturer or your organization’s IT support.
Safe Mode asks for credentials that do not work
Enter the account password, not a Windows Hello PIN, fingerprint, or face sign-in. If you do not know the password, use the account-recovery process available for that account before attempting driver changes.
The display is unreadable in normal mode but works in Safe Mode
Use Safe Mode to roll back the recent display-driver change. If the issue is only an extreme resolution or refresh rate, try Enable low-resolution video instead; that option keeps the current video driver.
There is no Roll Back Driver button
Windows may not have a previous package. Use the appropriate update option, or use System Restore or recent-update removal when the timing points to a broader Windows change.

Best Value
Safe Mode starts, but Networking does not
Networking is optional. If you already have the driver or support information locally, return to plain Safe Mode and continue the diagnosis without network access. If the device is managed, network and recovery policies may be controlled by the organization.
A recovery option looks more destructive than expected
Stop and read its data-retention description. Startup Settings and Device Manager are targeted steps. Update removal and System Restore affect broader system state, while reset and reinstall can affect applications and files depending on the selection.
A safe sequence to follow
- Use Shift + Restart from the sign-in screen whenever it is available.
- If sign-in is impossible, let failed starts open WinRE; use the two-interruption Automatic Repair method only as a fallback.
- Choose plain Safe Mode to isolate the startup crash, or Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is required.
- In Device Manager, roll back a recently changed display driver; update it when rollback is unavailable or does not fit the timing.
- Restart normally and test. Check a different cable or monitor if the symptom persists.
- For problems tied to a Windows update or broader system change, use update removal or System Restore before considering reset or reinstall.
This order preserves the most information and limits disruption. First establish whether normal startup is the boundary, then reverse the change most closely associated with the crash. Escalate only when the targeted action fails or the evidence points to a wider Windows change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enter Safe Mode if Windows never reaches the sign-in screen?
Yes. Allow Windows to enter WinRE after failed starts. If it does not, interrupt startup at the Windows or manufacturer logo twice by holding the power button, then let the third start open Automatic Repair. Choose Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode.
Why does my PIN or fingerprint not work in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode requires the account password. Windows Hello PIN, fingerprint, and face sign-in are unavailable in Safe Mode, even when they work during a normal startup.
Should I choose Safe Mode or Enable low-resolution video?
Choose Safe Mode to test whether a limited startup driver set avoids the crash. Choose Enable low-resolution video when Windows otherwise starts but the resolution or refresh rate makes the display unusable. Low-resolution video keeps the current video driver, so it is not a substitute for Safe Mode when the driver itself crashes while loading.
Does Safe Mode repair a graphics driver automatically?
No. Safe Mode is diagnostic. In Device Manager, inspect Display adapters and roll back a driver that changed immediately before the crashes. If rollback is unavailable or unsuitable, use an appropriate Windows Update or computer-manufacturer driver, then restart normally.
What if the crash continues after I change the driver?
Test another monitor or cable and disconnect unnecessary docks or adapters. If the computer crashes even in Safe Mode, consider hardware or a component that Safe Mode still uses. If the timing points to a Windows update or broader system change, consider recent-update removal or System Restore before reset or reinstall.
Do I need to buy a recovery drive or driver utility?
No. Microsoft’s route to Safe Mode uses built-in WinRE, Startup Settings, and Device Manager. A USB recovery drive can help with broader recovery or reinstall scenarios, but graphics hardware, a replacement monitor, and third-party driver-cleaning software are not prerequisites for entering Safe Mode.
The Bottom Line
Use Shift + Restart from the sign-in screen, or WinRE and Startup Settings when Windows cannot reach sign-in. Start with plain Safe Mode, use Device Manager to roll back a recently changed display driver or update it when appropriate, and restart normally to test. Treat low-resolution video as a separate display-settings option, check cables and monitors when symptoms persist, and reserve update removal, System Restore, reset, or reinstall for problems that the targeted driver step does not resolve.
