What equipment do you need to start playing tennis?
For an adult beginner, keep the first purchase list short:

- A comfortable racquet: Grip comfort matters more than choosing an advanced model. Ask a friend or facility whether you can borrow a racquet, or try a demo before spending money. A retired racquet is fine for getting started.
- Tennis balls: Standard yellow balls work, but a lower-compression ball can travel more slowly and make early control easier. A red-dot ball is one option for first practice.
- Supportive court shoes: Choose shoes made for court movement, with soles that do not mark the playing surface. Running shoes are not a substitute for stable lateral support.
You do not need premium gear to learn the basics, and no particular brand or model is necessary for a first session.

Children generally need shorter racquets and slower, lower-bouncing balls matched to their size and experience. USTA Midwest lists pre-strung 21–26-inch racquets for younger children and 27-inch racquets for older youth as general guidance; its age and ball recommendations are not rigid rules. Youth play progresses through red, orange, green and yellow ball stages.

Where to play and what to know about the court
A standard adult court is 78 feet long. It is 27 feet wide for singles and 36 feet wide for doubles. The singles sidelines are the narrower boundaries; the wider doubles sidelines are used when four players are playing.
| Stage | Court dimensions or setup | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Red | 36 by 18 feet | A smaller playing area suited to slower-ball learning and shorter movement. |
| Orange | 60 feet long; playing width varies with singles or doubles setup | An intermediate space between a red court and full-size court. |
| Green and yellow | Full-size court: 78 feet long, 27 feet wide for singles or 36 feet wide for doubles | Full-court play with progressively more demanding ball speed and bounce. |
You can learn control without a full-size court or permanent net. A public court is a straightforward place to begin; for informal practice, cones, tape or markers can define a smaller target area. Portable nets can also be used for scaled play. The USTA Public Parks Resource Guide (2026) recommends pop-up or portable nets for beginners of all ages and social play.

Find a low-pressure first session
Look for a public court, a community tennis program or an introductory class. A class can help with basic rules, grip and movement while giving you a partner and suitable balls. Tennis 101 at the USTA National Tennis Center is one example: it is described as a 90-minute introduction for people with no prior experience, covering rules and basic concepts and using low-compression balls as appropriate. Availability and class formats differ by location. The USTA Midwest Tennis 101 page can help you search for a nearby beginner program.

1. Bounce, tap and catch
- Hold a ball with your palm or thumb facing upward.
- Tap it gently so it rises to about eye height, let it bounce once, then catch it with your other hand.
- As you prepare for a forehand, move your feet and turn your shoulders so your body is sideways to the ball.
- When catching feels reliable, try tapping again after each bounce instead of catching.
A red-dot, lower-compression ball can make this self-rally drill easier for a first-time player of any age. Focus on placing the ball under control rather than hitting hard.

- Volcanic Frame Technology provides enhanced power and stability
- Power Strings feature longer strings for explosive power
- AirLite Alloy construction creates lightweight frame with power and durability
- Stop Shock Pads reduce racket vibrations for improved feel
2. Cooperative short rally
With a partner, stand close enough to exchange gentle shots. Agree to use a slower ball or smaller target area if that helps you keep the ball in play. Count successful exchanges, not winners. You can gradually increase the distance or court area as control improves.
3. Ready, rally and recover
After each groundstroke, move back toward a home-base position near the middle of the baseline and prepare for the next ball. The point is to avoid watching your shot from wherever you hit it: recover toward the middle, get balanced, and be ready to move again.

How to make the first session manageable
- Keep the goal modest: make clean contact and sustain a few exchanges.
- Use a slower ball or smaller practice area if regulation-speed rallies break down.
- Take turns feeding or rallying cooperatively rather than trying to win points immediately.
- For children, adjust racquet size, ball stage and court area to the player’s size and skill; age alone is not a precise guide.
