To start Old School RuneScape (OSRS), create a Jagex account, install the official client through the Jagex Launcher on Windows or macOS—or install the official app on Android or iOS—and sign in with the same account on every device. Begin free-to-play, finish Tutorial Island, and only then decide whether membership is worth paying for.
OSRS launched in 2013 and is a separate game from modern RuneScape. Your characters, progress and items do not transfer between those two games, so choose Old School RuneScape in the launcher or app when you create your first character.

What you need before you begin
You do not need a subscription to create an account or start playing. The free-to-play version includes the opening tutorial and enough early content to learn movement, combat, skills, quests, banking and the game’s economy. Membership is an optional expansion once you know that you enjoy OSRS and want access to members-only areas, skills, quests and activities.

- An accessible email address that you will keep using for account recovery.
- A strong, unique password for your Jagex account.
- A Windows or macOS computer, or an Android phone/tablet or iPhone/iPad that meets the published software requirements.
- A reliable internet connection. The game is online-only, so an offline launch is not a supported way to play.
Use the same Jagex account on your computer and phone. Creating a second login can leave you with separate characters and split progress.

Create your Jagex account and first character
- Open Jagex’s official account-start page and select New account if you are creating your first character.
- Register with an email address you can access today and create a strong password. Use an address that you will still control years from now because it is central to recovery and security notices.
- When the account is ready, choose Old School RuneScape rather than modern RuneScape. They are different game profiles even when they are accessed through the same Jagex account.
- Confirm your email and sign in from the device on which you plan to play first. You can add the other device after the initial setup.
Understand the one-way account upgrade
Jagex’s support guidance warns that upgrading or importing an existing character to a Jagex account replaces the old RuneScape login details. Once a character is upgraded, the change cannot be undone, so use an accessible email and check that you are attaching the intended character before confirming.
A single Jagex account can contain up to 20 RuneScape characters. Characters that are linked cannot later be removed, so do not attach a character merely to test a login or because you are unsure which profile you want to keep.
Install OSRS on Windows or macOS
The Jagex Launcher is the official desktop starting point. It provides a single library for Jagex games and can install the OSRS client and the supported RuneLite option.
- Download the Jagex Launcher from Jagex’s official website. Avoid download mirrors, modified installers and links posted in unrelated forums.
- Install and open the Launcher, then sign in with the Jagex account you just created.
- Select Old School RuneScape from the game library.
- For your first session, choose the standard Old School RuneScape client and press Play. Let the Launcher complete any client update before logging in.
- Finish Tutorial Island before changing settings or paying for membership. The tutorial teaches the controls and gives you a safe introduction to the core game loop.
Adding RuneLite later
RuneLite is optional. It is a desktop client with additional interface and plugin features, not a requirement for creating an account or learning the game. Jagex’s documented installation route is Jagex Launcher → Play dropdown → RuneLite. The Launcher can download and launch it for you.

Starting with the official client keeps the first session simple and makes it easier to understand the unmodified interface. After you know where the inventory, minimap, chat, settings and combat controls are, you can decide whether RuneLite’s extra overlays or plugins solve a problem you actually have. Install it only through the Launcher’s RuneLite entry; do not enter your Jagex credentials into an unofficial client or a download page that imitates Jagex.
Install OSRS on Android or iPhone/iPad
- Open Google Play on Android or the Apple App Store on iPhone or iPad.
- Search for the official Old School RuneScape app and verify that it is the Jagex-published listing before installing.
- Install the app, open it and sign in with the same Jagex account used on your computer. Do not choose a separate account just because this is your first mobile session.
- Allow the app to finish its data download and updates over a trusted Wi-Fi connection when possible.
- Complete or continue Tutorial Island. Your character and progress should be available because the account—not the device—holds the game profile.
Mobile OSRS is the same game world and account service as the desktop version. A phone is useful for short sessions, bank management, skilling or checking in while travelling; a computer generally gives you a larger view and more precise mouse input for detailed interfaces.
Can you switch between PC and mobile?
Yes. Jagex’s official app information states that OSRS works on mobile and desktop with one account. Log out on one device if you want to avoid confusion, then sign in with the same email and password on the other. Your character’s location, inventory, bank and completed activities are associated with the account and are not tied to a particular installation.

Neither choice changes the advice to protect your account and use official distribution channels. If a plugin, guide or overlay asks for your password, payment details or a separate launcher, stop and verify it before continuing.
Free-to-play first, membership later
Membership is an expansion decision, not a prerequisite for starting. Play the free-to-play opening long enough to learn the interface and decide whether the game’s deliberately slow progression suits you. Tutorial Island and early free-to-play areas provide that test without a subscription.
When you buy membership, Jagex’s account support information says the purchase is made for a selected character. Membership applies to RuneScape and Old School RuneScape for that character, but the two games still keep separate progress and items. Check the character selector carefully before confirming a purchase.

Published device requirements
Jagex’s published OSRS requirements can change as the clients are updated. Check the live support page before troubleshooting an installation, but the currently documented baselines are:

These figures describe Jagex’s published client guidance rather than a promise that every device will deliver identical frame rates or battery life. Keep additional free storage available for operating-system updates, app caches and temporary installation files. A device that technically meets the version requirement can still feel slow if it is overheating, nearly full or running many background apps.

- Use Jagex-owned pages for the Jagex Launcher and desktop client, and use the official Google Play or Apple App Store listing for mobile.
- Check the publisher name and spelling before installing. Search results and advertisements can lead to look-alike pages.
- Never type your Jagex email or password into a third-party “verification,” “free membership” or plugin site.
- Use a unique password and protect the email account that receives Jagex security messages.
- Do not share one-time codes, recovery information or payment confirmations with another player.
- Keep the Launcher, operating system and mobile app updated through their normal update mechanisms.
A legitimate RuneLite installation should be launched from the Jagex Launcher’s RuneLite entry. If a download claims to be a special performance build or asks you to disable security software, close it and return to the official route.
First session: what to do after installation
Complete Tutorial Island
Tutorial Island introduces camera movement, walking, combat, skills, equipment, banking and basic account interactions. Follow each instruction rather than skipping steps; the opening area is designed to teach controls that will otherwise seem unexplained in the wider world.
Learn the core loop
After the tutorial, try a few activities before spending money: gather a resource, train a combat style, cook or craft an item, bank your supplies and attempt an early quest. This gives you a practical sense of OSRS’s loop of preparation, risk, travel, rewards and gradual upgrades.
Set up controls for your device
On PC, adjust window size, camera sensitivity and key bindings only after you know the default controls. On mobile, test tap-to-move, the minimap, inventory gestures and the location of the logout button. A few minutes spent learning the interface prevents accidental movement or combat actions later.
Decide whether to continue free-to-play
There is no deadline to become a member. Continue in free-to-play until you understand how you spend time in the game and which members features would improve that experience. If you are still unsure about the game’s pace, buying membership will not solve that uncertainty.

Troubleshooting common startup problems
The Launcher will not install or open
- Confirm that the computer is running Windows 10 64-bit or newer, or macOS 11 or newer.
- Download the installer again from Jagex’s official page rather than using a mirror.
- Restart the computer, close other installers and make sure there is free storage for the client and temporary files.
- If security software quarantines the installer, verify that the file came from Jagex before changing any security setting. Do not permanently disable protection for an unverified download.
The mobile app crashes or runs poorly
- Check that Android 9 or newer, or iOS 13 or newer, is installed.
- Update the app from the official store and restart the device.
- Close background apps, free storage and let an overheated phone cool before trying a long session.
- Test on a stable connection. If the problem occurs only on one network, switch networks before assuming the account is at fault.
The character is missing on another device
- Sign out and check the exact Jagex account email used on the first device.
- Confirm that you selected Old School RuneScape, not modern RuneScape.
- Check whether you accidentally created a new character during mobile setup.
- If you recently upgraded or imported a character, use the Jagex account login rather than the former RuneScape login details.
You cannot find RuneLite
RuneLite is a desktop option in the Jagex Launcher, not a separate mobile app. Open the Launcher, choose Old School RuneScape, open the Play dropdown and select RuneLite. If that entry is absent, update the Launcher and verify that you are using the official installation.
You are being asked to pay immediately
Close the payment screen and return to the game selection. Account creation and the initial free-to-play game do not require membership. A payment prompt may be an optional upgrade, not a prerequisite for entering OSRS.
