What you are trying to do in a match
League of Legends is a five-versus-five strategy game. On Summoner’s Rift, teams fight across lanes, use champion abilities, and gather for team fights as they push toward the opposing base. Professional broadcasts show the result of many players coordinating at once. When you start playing, you will also be learning movement, camera control, ability use, and map decisions. Treat the first games as a chance to connect those pieces, not as a test of whether you can imitate a pro.
A forgiving route into your first games
- Work through the official beginner essentials. Use Riot’s guide and tutorial to get familiar with controls and the match objective before worrying about advanced tactics.
- Practice in Co-op versus AI. Riot describes this mode as a lower-pressure place for new players to learn and grow, with bots intended to feel more like ordinary Summoner’s Rift gameplay. You play alongside teammates against bots rather than a human opposing team. See Riot’s Co-op versus AI overview.
- Try Swiftplay when you are ready for PvP. Riot introduced Swiftplay as a faster, lower-stakes way to experience traditional Summoner’s Rift, including for people learning or relearning League. It keeps the experience closer to standard PvP than a bot match. Riot design director Bryan “Riot Axes” Salvatore described it as “a fast queue that still allows you to experience the full arc of what League can offer” in the Swiftplay announcement.
- Pick one focus for each match. For example, concentrate on moving around the map, using your abilities, or noticing when teammates gather. This is a practical way to keep early games manageable, rather than measuring progress only by wins or polished execution.
Which mode should you choose?

Queue arrangements can change. In patch 26.3, Riot said it had changed Co-op versus AI to use Swiftplay instead of normal Summoner’s Rift, then reverted that change after queue times increased. Check the live client for the modes currently offered in your region rather than assuming an older queue setup still applies. Riot’s patch 26.3 notes describe the change and reversal.

Use esports knowledge without expecting esports-level control
Watching matches may make champion abilities, team fights, and movement around the map easier to recognize. Playing adds the task of controlling your own champion while making decisions in real time. Choose one moment or mechanic you have seen—such as a champion combo—and pay attention to it, then try it in a practice match. Riot’s 2018 new-player discussion suggests using streamers or YouTube creators to learn combos; it is a limited tip, not a complete current curriculum.
You do not need to upgrade your setup to begin. Start with the controls and equipment you already have; a different mouse is optional, not a prerequisite.
