You can start investing in Indian stocks through an index mutual fund by completing KYC, choosing a fund that tracks an index suited to your goal, reviewing the scheme’s current costs and tracking information, and investing through an AMC or an AMFI-registered distributor. A demat or trading account is not universally required for the direct mutual-fund route.
What an index mutual fund does
An index mutual fund aims to mirror a named stock-market index, such as the Nifty 50, by holding all or most of its constituents in proportions intended to match the benchmark. It is passively managed: the goal is to track the index, not outperform it. Fund expenses and operational factors can cause its returns to differ from the index; SEBI describes this divergence as tracking error. SEBI’s investor education material explains index funds and uses the Nifty 50 as an example.

An index fund’s name does not mean it covers the whole Indian market. A broad-market index spreads exposure across multiple companies, while a sectoral or thematic index concentrates on a particular part of the market. Diversification may reduce dependence on any one company, but it does not eliminate market risk or guarantee gains.
How to get started
- Decide what market exposure you want. Read the scheme’s stated benchmark and understand its breadth. Check whether it follows a broad-market, sectoral, or thematic index; do not choose by the words “index fund” alone.
- Complete KYC. KYC is a prerequisite for mutual-fund investing, whether you apply online or through a conventional channel. Follow the current instructions from the AMC or intermediary you choose. AMFI’s investment guidance describes the available routes and KYC requirement.
- Choose how to invest. You can invest directly through an AMC’s mutual-fund channel or use an AMFI-registered distributor. Check the provider’s current process; the available steps and interface can vary.
- Review the specific scheme and plan. Read the current scheme information document and key information. Confirm the benchmark, expense ratio, and published tracking information for the exact scheme and plan you are considering.
- Place your investment and keep the records. Follow the AMC’s or distributor’s instructions for a lump-sum purchase or systematic investment plan (SIP). Minimum amounts and other terms are scheme-specific, so check the current documents rather than assuming a universal figure.
Do you need a demat or trading account?
Not necessarily. SEBI’s securities-market starter guidance describes a demat account with a registered depository participant, a trading or broking account with a registered broker, and a bank account for payments as part of investing in securities through the market. That is different from the direct mutual-fund route: AMFI describes investing through an AMC or a distributor without making a trading account a universal prerequisite. Mutual-fund units may be held in demat form where applicable, but that is distinct from buying directly through a mutual-fund channel. See SEBI’s securities-market guidance and AMFI’s investment guidance.

Direct or regular plan: what changes?
A direct plan is purchased from the AMC without routing the investment through a distributor. A regular plan involves an intermediary, such as a distributor. SEBI explains that direct plans have lower costs because distributor commissions are not included in the same way; regular plans have higher costs and may include intermediary support. Compare the current expense ratio and documents for the specific scheme and plan, rather than relying on illustrative examples. SEBI’s investor education material explains the distinction.
| Plan | Route | Cost and support |
|---|---|---|
| Direct | Invest with the AMC without a distributor | Lower costs because distributor commissions are not included in the same way; no distributor intermediary |
| Regular | Invest through an intermediary such as a distributor | Higher costs; intermediary support may be available |
How to compare index funds
Compare schemes by the exposure they provide and by how closely they track their benchmarks—not by a generic claim that one is “best.” Current scheme-level fees and tracking figures are not established here, so check each scheme’s latest published documents.

No fund’s benchmark performance should be treated as a promise of the fund’s future result. The index fund aims to follow its benchmark, and the actual fund result can diverge.
