You can loop a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Indian VPS with FFmpeg, but “always-on” depends on more than the command: the channel must be enabled for live streaming, the VPS must sustain the upload, and a supervisor must recover the process if it exits. This guide covers a prerecorded-file loop; a live camera or other live input needs different input and reconnect handling.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel verified for live streaming and without live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before configuring the VPS. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Linux VPS with the source video available on disk, permission to run a sustained outbound stream, and enough egress capacity and transfer allowance.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Check the installed build with
ffmpeg -version; availability of codecs and protocols depends on how that build was compiled. - A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
An Indian VPS is a hosting-location choice, not a special YouTube encoding mode. YouTube’s general guidance does not establish a preferred Indian region or provider. Confirm regional availability, sustained outbound capacity, transfer charges, restart or console access, storage, and monitoring with the provider; measure from the actual instance rather than relying on an advertised download-speed figure.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Verify the channel and check its live-streaming eligibility. Enable live streaming early because first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and create or select a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube offers it; Google documents RTMPS over TLS on port 443. Use the exact endpoint shown for your stream rather than guessing a regional URL. See YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Keep the key in a protected configuration or environment file. Do not put a real key in a public script, source control, screenshots, shell history, or logs. Restrict file access; if the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the VPS configuration.
- For the first run, select private or unlisted visibility and verify the incoming preview before making the stream public.
Choose the output profile and size the VPS connection
Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to match the intended output. YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate guidance varies by profile, so select the bitrate from the table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec instead of copying a value from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes.

YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. For a stream targeting bitrate B, reserve at least B × 1.2 of sustained outbound capacity as a planning minimum. This is a direct application of YouTube’s margin, not a VPS-specific performance guarantee. Include other traffic and, if you send primary and backup feeds, their combined bitrate in the capacity calculation. Check the provider’s egress cap or billing as well as throughput; network interruptions can break the stream. See YouTube’s bandwidth guidance.

If the file already uses a compatible codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format, consider stream-copying rather than re-encoding. Re-encoding uses more CPU; the required VPS capacity depends on the chosen codec and output profile and should be assessed from the instance’s actual encoder load. No fixed VPS size is established for this workload.
Loop a prerecorded file to YouTube with FFmpeg
The command below is a template, not a universal tested configuration. Replace the profile placeholders with values appropriate to the output and current YouTube settings. Supply the ingest URL and key through a protected configuration method in production, not as a literal secret in the command.

-maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_SERVER_URL/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY'
-rereads the file at its natural playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. This is appropriate for a prerecorded file, not a live camera or other live input.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio. If the source is already compatible, evaluate stream-copy mode instead; copying avoids re-encoding but does not convert an incompatible source to a suitable output.-b:vand-maxrateset the target and maximum video bitrate in this example;-bufsizeis the rate-control buffer. Choose values for the output profile, rather than treating the placeholders as literal values.-gsets the GOP size in frames. To achieve a two-second keyframe interval, set it to the frame rate multiplied by two (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps). Keep the interval within YouTube’s guidance of no more than four seconds.-f flvselects the container used for the RTMP-family ingest protocol. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation and protocol documentation describe the available options; exact support depends on the build.
Start with a private or unlisted stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm playback, audio, image quality, and that the watch page is accessible as intended before switching visibility.
Keep the process running and monitor recovery
A running FFmpeg process is not an uptime guarantee. Run it under a process supervisor such as systemd with a restart-on-failure policy, retain logs, and monitor process health, outbound traffic, and whether YouTube continues to receive the stream. Configure alerts for process exits or a prolonged missing ingest, then test both the initial stream and recovery before relying on the setup. A restart policy can reduce manual intervention, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted output or recover a failed source by itself.

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
FFmpeg documents TCP keepalive support for long-lived RTMP connections, but keepalive does not replace source-failure handling or checking whether YouTube has resumed ingest. YouTube recommends checking the preview, watch page, mobile playback, and audio/video during a test; see its live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
If your input is a live camera, capture device, or another live feed, remove the file-looping options and configure the actual input separately. Plan how that source reconnects after a device, network, or process failure; the prerecorded-file command above does not provide that behavior.

Account for long-stream archives and content rights
YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local archive backup, and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If a complete replay matters, record independently and plan sessions below that threshold rather than assuming a long uninterrupted broadcast will appear as one complete archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a preview | Incorrect server URL or key, live streaming not enabled, or an outbound connection problem. | Check the exact URL and key in Live Control Room, verify channel eligibility, and test outbound connectivity from the VPS. Reset an exposed key and update the protected configuration. |
| Stream starts but drops or buffers | Insufficient sustained egress, network disruption, provider limits, or competing traffic. | Measure sustained outbound capacity from the instance, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check egress limits and other traffic. |
| Video is rejected or looks wrong | Output profile, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, or source compatibility does not match the selected settings. | Compare the FFmpeg output against YouTube’s current encoder settings for the chosen resolution and frame rate. Verify the keyframe interval and test privately before going public. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | Source audio may be absent or incompatible, or its encoding settings may not suit the selected output. | Inspect the file’s audio streams and test playback in YouTube’s preview, including on a mobile device. |
| FFmpeg exits and the stream stays offline | Process crash, VPS restart, source-file issue, or connection loss. | Review retained logs, confirm the source file remains available, and check that the supervisor restarts the process. Verify ingest after recovery; restarting FFmpeg alone does not prove the stream is back. |
| The replay is incomplete or missing | The session exceeded YouTube’s archive limit or archiving otherwise did not preserve the full broadcast. | Keep an independent recording and schedule sessions below 12 hours if a YouTube archive is important. |
