You can enter aerospace through engineering or hands-on technical work; the right route depends on the job you want. Aerospace engineers typically need a bachelor’s degree, while technician and technologist roles often call for an associate degree and may accept a certificate or high-school education. Use these 10 steps to choose a target, build relevant experience, and check what employers actually require.

How do I start a career in aerospace?

Start by narrowing down the kind of work that interests you, then work backward from the qualifications in current job postings. Aerospace spans aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, launch vehicles, defense systems, and the equipment and operations that support them. The field employs engineers and technical workers, along with people in other specialties; the career routes below focus on engineering and aerospace engineering and operations technician and technologist roles.

  1. Explore the breadth of the field

Think beyond designing rockets or aircraft. Aerospace work also involves systems that guide, power, test, manufacture, operate, and maintain vehicles and equipment. Different roles contribute to a product or mission at different stages.

  2. Pick a role to investigate

Aeronautical engineering focuses on flight within Earth’s atmosphere; astronautical engineering focuses on spacecraft. Within aerospace engineering, specialties can include structures, aerodynamics, propulsion, robotics, and guidance, navigation, and control. Technician and technologist work can involve operating or maintaining equipment used to develop, test, produce, and sustain aircraft and spacecraft.

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Read descriptions of actual roles before committing to a program. Compare the daily duties and required qualifications, not just the job title.

What degree do I need to work in aerospace?

There is no single degree required for every aerospace-sector job. The typical credential depends on the occupation: aerospace engineers generally enter with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering or a related field; aerospace engineering and operations technicians and technologists typically have an associate degree, though some employers consider a certificate or high-school education. Confirm requirements in the specific listings that interest you.

Target role Typical education Important qualification
Aerospace engineer Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering or a related field Employers may prefer graduates of accredited aerospace engineering programs. Accreditation is usually required for engineering licensure, but licensure is not required for entry-level aerospace engineer positions. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
Aerospace engineering and operations technician or technologist Typically an associate degree; some employers consider a certificate or high-school education Check the target employer’s requirements and the role’s equipment, testing, production, or operations duties. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

How should I prepare academically?

  1. Match your education plan to the role

Once you have a target role, compare its stated education requirements with programs available to you. If you are choosing between an engineering degree and an engineering technology program, consider the work each prepares you to do and the credentials employers request—not only the program name.

  2. Build math and science foundations

Math, physics, and chemistry are useful preparation for aerospace engineering. Engineering programs typically combine classroom learning with laboratory and field work, and engineering study uses calculus and other advanced mathematics. Strengthen prerequisite skills early and look for coursework that lets you apply them.

  3. Choose a program with practical learning

Compare the curriculum, laboratory access, hands-on projects, and any internship or co-op opportunities. For aerospace engineering, employers may prefer graduates of accredited programs. Accreditation is usually required for engineering licensure, although a license is not an entry-level requirement for aerospace engineer jobs.

How can I gain experience before applying?

  1. Make something and document your contribution

Use a class assignment, student team, lab, challenge, or personal project to practice relevant skills. Keep a concise record of what you personally did, the tools or methods you used, and what the work produced. A portfolio is a practical way to show evidence of applied skills; it is not a universal aerospace hiring requirement.

  2. Look for internships and co-ops

College internship and co-op programs can provide practical experience. NASA offers two distinct student routes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
    • OSTEM internships: NASA describes these as short-term, project-based learning. Its program page lists a 10-week summer session and 15-week fall and spring sessions.
    • Pathways internships: These are developmental federal internships with rotations. NASA says successful completion can lead to conversion to a full-time civil-service role, subject to applicable conditions.

NASA lists U.S. citizenship and a minimum age of 16 for both programs. Check the live opportunity for current eligibility details, dates, and deadlines. Neither program guarantees admission or employment. (NASA Internship Programs)

NASA also describes student internships, fellowships, challenges, and competitions as ways to connect with missions, mentors, and hands-on experiences. Its Community College Aerospace Scholars challenge is one example for community college students; application windows are time-limited, so consult the current official page before planning around one. These programs can support learning and exploration, but do not guarantee a job. (NASA FY2025 STEM Impacts Report; NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars)

Can I get an aerospace job without a four-year degree?

Yes, some aerospace technical roles may be accessible without a bachelor’s degree. Technician and technologist jobs typically call for an associate degree, and some employers consider applicants with a certificate or high-school education. The right option depends on the employer and the role’s responsibilities.

  1. Consider the technical route

If you prefer equipment, testing, manufacturing, or operations, compare an engineering technology associate degree or certificate with a four-year engineering program against the qualifications in relevant job postings. NASA’s 2026 skilled technical workforce initiative is an example of efforts to develop regional pathways into technical aerospace jobs that may not require a bachelor’s degree. Its state and regional hubs are intended to connect NASA, industry, education, and regional partners; an initiative is not a hiring promise. (NASA Skilled Technical Workforce)

How do I apply for aerospace jobs?

  1. Prepare an application for the role

Use the job posting to decide which coursework, lab work, projects, teamwork, and software experience to emphasize. Describe your own contribution accurately and connect it to the listed duties. There is no single résumé format or software toolkit established for every aerospace role, so do not present one as a universal requirement.

    • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  2. Verify constraints and keep learning

Before applying, check the posting for degree, experience, location, citizenship, and clearance requirements. Defense-related projects may require a security clearance, and some types and levels require U.S. citizenship. NASA lists U.S. citizenship for its OSTEM and Pathways internships, but rules vary across employers and positions. Experienced engineers may pursue a Professional Engineer license; it is not required to start in an aerospace engineer job.

What do aerospace jobs pay, and is the field growing?

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures provide national context for two specific occupations, not a starting-pay promise or a forecast for every aerospace job.

U.S. occupation Employment and pay Projected outlook
Aerospace engineers About 68,700 jobs in 2025; median annual wage of $134,960 in May 2025 Employment projected to grow 8% from 2025 to 2035, with about 3,800 openings per year on average over that decade. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)
Aerospace engineering and operations technologists and technicians Median annual wage of $82,890 in May 2025 Employment projected to grow 12% from 2025 to 2035. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

These national wage medians include workers with different experience levels and in different locations. The projections apply to the named U.S. occupations, not to all jobs in the aerospace industry.

What should applicants outside the United States check?

The education, licensing, and employment information here is U.S.-centered. If you plan to work elsewhere, check local degree equivalencies, licensing rules, work authorization, and employer requirements. In any country, the specific job or program listing is the best place to verify current eligibility and qualifications.
