Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallYou can start a prerecorded gaming replay when Ubuntu boots by running its encoder as an enabled systemd service. The service starts the encoder; it does not, by itself, make YouTube start a scheduled event, loop the replay, or reconnect after a network failure. Configure and test each behavior separately before relying on an unattended stream.
What you need before automating the stream
- An Ubuntu computer that stays powered on and connected to the internet.
- A replay file that the chosen encoder can read, plus enough upload bandwidth for its configured stream bitrate.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says streamers must be at least 16 and that live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days affect eligibility: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.
- A YouTube Live event and its encoder stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password because it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel.
Use gameplay footage, music, overlays, and other material you are authorized to livestream. YouTube requires live streams to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms; whether a particular game or soundtrack is cleared depends on the rights involved.

Prepare the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create an encoder stream or schedule a live event.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube documents entering both in the encoder: Set up your encoder for YouTube Live.
- Decide how the event should go live. A scheduled event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings are separate from Ubuntu’s boot behavior. YouTube’s scheduled encoder workflow may require you to wait for the preview and click Go live; confirm the controls and settings shown for your event in Live Control Room.
- If the stream key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration before streaming again. Keep it out of scripts that are readable by other users, screenshots, and public logs.
Configure and test an encoder
Choose a Linux-capable encoder that can read the replay, send a feed to YouTube, and provide any looping or retry behavior you require. This may be a command-line encoder or a graphical application, but the exact loop and reconnection settings depend on the software and installed version. Test those behaviors locally; a systemd service cannot supply them automatically.
Use YouTube’s recommended ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder ingest. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Use the settings in your encoder that correspond to these values, and verify the encoder’s own documentation for version-specific controls. See YouTube encoder settings.

| Replay output | YouTube-recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom: the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. Check the actual sustained upload speed where the Ubuntu machine will run, and include audio in the total bitrate calculation. Guidance: encoder settings and streaming tips.
Check the feed before making it a boot service
- Run the encoder manually with the replay, YouTube URL, key, and intended output settings.
- Check that the Live Control Room receives a preview and reports a healthy stream before asking viewers to join.
- Watch and listen for synchronization, clipping, black frames, missing audio, or unexpected endings. If looping is intended, confirm that the replay returns to its beginning.
- Check the encoder’s local archive or output file if you are recording one; YouTube advises checking that a local archive is growing.
- Test a deliberate network interruption and observe what the encoder actually does. Do not assume a service restart policy reconnects a live encoder session correctly.
Run the encoder at Ubuntu boot with systemd
A system service is a practical choice when the stream should start without an interactive desktop login. Put the tested encoder invocation in ExecStart=, use absolute paths, and set its user and working directory deliberately. The example below is a template: replace the placeholders with the executable, arguments, account, and paths for your encoder. It does not provide a working FFmpeg or OBS command, nor does it configure replay looping or network reconnection.

WantedBy=multi-user.target
Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart a process when it exits unsuccessfully. It is not a guarantee that YouTube will accept a new connection, that a replay will resume at the right point, or that the encoder will retry while it remains running. Confirm those cases with the encoder’s own options and a controlled test. The network-online.target ordering can help avoid starting before network-online is reached, but the network manager must implement that target meaningfully on the machine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInstall, enable, and start the unit
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-replay.service. Creating or editing a system unit requires administrator privileges. - Reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable boot activation:
sudo systemctl enable youtube-replay.service. Enabling creates the dependency link for the configured boot target; it does not necessarily start the service immediately. - Start it now for testing:
sudo systemctl start youtube-replay.service. Enabling and starting are distinct actions. - Inspect its state:
systemctl status youtube-replay.service. For recent logs, runjournalctl -u youtube-replay.service -b. - After a controlled reboot, check the status and logs again, then confirm the preview and event state in YouTube Live Control Room.
Ubuntu’s service-unit documentation explains unit configuration and install targets: systemd.unit. The systemctl manual distinguishes enabling a unit from starting it: systemctl. Check the manuals for your Ubuntu release if its packaged systemd version differs.

Separate the four behaviors you are automating
- Ubuntu boot: systemd enables and launches the service at a boot target.
- Replay loop: the encoder must be configured to repeat the file if you want continuous playback. Verify the behavior with the installed encoder.
- YouTube go-live: event auto-start settings determine whether YouTube starts the event when a feed arrives or waits for an operator action. Check the specific event in Live Control Room.
- Recovery: the encoder or service needs suitable failure handling. A process restart is not proof of a successful YouTube reconnect; test disconnections and observe the preview and stream health.
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder early, previewing the incoming feed, monitoring audio and video quality, testing the setup, and checking that the stream is accessible to viewers. A booted computer and a running process do not prove that a live event is reaching viewers. For ongoing checks, see YouTube streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The service does not start after reboot | The unit was not enabled, has a syntax or path error, or starts under a user without access to the replay or configuration. | Run systemctl is-enabled youtube-replay.service, then inspect systemctl status youtube-replay.service and journalctl -u youtube-replay.service -b. Check the unit’s absolute paths, account, and permissions. |
| The service runs but YouTube shows no preview | The encoder may have an incorrect URL or key, may not be sending a supported feed, or may be unable to reach the network. | Compare the configured URL and key with the event’s stream settings; check encoder logs and network connectivity. Regenerate a key if it may have been exposed. |
| The preview arrives but the event is not live to viewers | The scheduled event may be waiting for an operator’s Go live action or may have different auto-start settings. | Check the event’s current Live Control Room controls and auto-start setting; follow the scheduled-event workflow for that event. |
| The replay ends instead of repeating | Looping is an encoder-specific playback setting, not a systemd boot setting. | Set up looping in the selected encoder and test past the end of the file before enabling unattended operation. |
| The stream drops or does not recover after an outage | The encoder may exit, remain stuck, or fail to establish a fresh ingest connection. A systemd restart policy alone does not ensure recovery. | Inspect encoder and journal logs, test the encoder’s own retry behavior, and verify the preview returns after a controlled outage. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or playback stutters | The outgoing bitrate may exceed sustainable upload bandwidth, or the encoder’s settings may not match the connection. | Check sustained upload capacity and reduce the total bitrate if needed while preserving YouTube’s recommended headroom. Review the stream-health feedback. |
Plan for long-running streams and archives
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says a stream under 12 hours is automatically archived after it ends. An always-running Ubuntu service does not guarantee a single permanent archive or avoid YouTube’s stream-duration behavior. If an archive matters, plan and test deliberate stream boundaries, and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. See YouTube encoder setup.
