How to Start a New Witcher 3 Playthrough Focused on Gwent, Crafting, and Exploration

Start with the regular base-game campaign, then treat each region as a small loop rather than a corridor between main quests: explore nearby points of interest, accept side activities that fit your level and mood, collect materials, prepare Geralt’s equipment, play Gwent whenever the game offers it, and return to the main story when you are ready. That rhythm lets the optional systems become the playthrough instead of distractions from it.

Before launching, verify the edition installed on your platform. The current official product page calls the updated release The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered and says Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included. A 29 September 2026 announcement describes a free upgrade for existing owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Store names, ownership records, and upgrade paths can differ by platform and region, so check your own library or storefront rather than relying on a package name seen elsewhere.

Choose the right starting point

Use the main campaign for a complete first run

If your goal is to discover the world gradually, select the normal base-game campaign rather than jumping straight into an expansion start. The official FAQ explains that standalone expansion starts remain possible, but those presets are designed for entering expansion content directly. Beginning with the main campaign gives exploration, crafting, character progression, and Gwent room to develop together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm what is actually installed

Open your platform’s game-management or add-on screen and check that the base game launches and that the expansions are installed if you intend to keep them available. Do not assume that owning an older edition automatically means every file is present after an upgrade. If the store displays both a Complete Edition label and Remastered language, use the edition and add-on information shown for your account and region as the authority.

Set a flexible objective

Do not define success as finishing every marker before advancing the story. A better target is to make each visit to a new area productive: learn its layout, sample its optional activities, improve your preparation, and leave with a reason to return. The official description presents the Continent as a place of encounters, choices, and consequences; your route should leave space for those surprises.

The repeatable playthrough loop

The following loop is an editorial routine, not a proven optimal quest order. Use it whenever you enter a settlement, wilderness zone, or new stretch of the map.

Phase What to do Decision to make
Orient Look over the nearby map and identify the next story objective, optional activities, settlements, and unexplored spaces. How far can you roam without turning this session into aimless travel?
Explore Move through the local area, investigate points of interest, and talk to characters whose activities you encounter. Which discoveries are worth handling now, and which can wait?
Collect Pick up useful materials and equipment during normal travel instead of making a separate farming trip. Do you have room and a clear use for what you are carrying?
Prepare Review your swords, available consumables, and current skills before a demanding encounter. What kind of preparation matches the threat and your preferred play style?
Play Gwent When the game presents an opportunity to play, stop if you want Gwent to be a central part of the run. Is this a good moment for a card-game break, or do you want to finish the nearby objective first?
Advance Return to the main quest after the local circuit feels complete enough. Are you moving the story because you are ready, rather than because the map pressured you?

How to explore without losing the story

Work in local circuits

Choose one settlement or quest area as your base. Travel outward until you have handled the activities that interest you, then return to that hub before moving on. This keeps exploration coherent: you remember why you entered a forest, which characters you met, and where your newly gathered materials came from.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate “nearby” from “eventually”

Not every visible marker deserves an immediate detour. A useful rule is to clear opportunities that lie along your current route, while recording distant ones mentally or on a personal note. If a diversion would require a long backtrack, postpone it until the story or another activity brings you close again.

Let choices matter more than completion counts

The official product description characterizes the world as morally ambiguous and full of complex choices and consequences. That framing is a reason to read conversations and decide according to the kind of Geralt you want to play, not a reason to chase a supposedly perfect sequence. There is no substantiated single route that makes every optional activity optimal.

Use a “leave with a purpose” test

Before leaving an area, identify one concrete reason to return: an unfinished activity, a crafting need, a Gwent opportunity you deliberately postponed, or a story lead. If you cannot name one, move the main quest forward instead of circling the same markers.

A Gwent-focused routine

Make matches part of travel

Gwent is described on the official product page as an iconic card game from The Witcher 3. To foreground it, treat every encountered invitation as a legitimate stop in your route. Play before leaving a settlement, after completing a nearby side activity, or during a quiet return trip to your current hub. This makes Gwent a recurring social activity rather than a system reserved for the end of the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a personal Gwent log

The available official material does not establish a best early deck, a verified opponent order, or a complete card-location guide. You can still keep your own lightweight record:

  • Note the settlement or character where you found an opportunity.
  • Record whether you won, lost, or chose to postpone the match.
  • Write down which kinds of cards or effects felt useful to you, without treating that observation as a universal build rule.
  • Mark any opponent you want to revisit after your collection or confidence improves.

This turns exploration into a continuing card-game trail while leaving room for your own discoveries. Avoid following an online “perfect order” unless it is based on a source that documents the exact version and mechanics you are playing.

Keep the card game separate from the tabletop product

Gwent: The Legendary Card Game is an optional physical printing inspired by the in-world game. CD PROJEKT RED describes decks for the Northern Realms, Nilfgaard, Monsters, Scoia’tael, and Skellige. You do not need the tabletop product to play Gwent inside the video game, and owning it does not change your video-game progression.

Crafting and preparation as part of the loop

Gather during ordinary exploration

When you pass through a new area, collect materials and inspect equipment you find instead of postponing every pickup until you have a recipe in mind. The purpose is not to strip every location bare; it is to make exploration feed the preparation system naturally. If your inventory becomes difficult to manage, return to a hub and review what you actually intend to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check preparation before a serious fight

The official description sums up the intended mindset with the line, “A witcher always comes prepared.” It specifically names elixirs, blade oils, and Geralt’s silver and steel swords as preparation tools. Before an encounter you expect to be difficult, pause to review which of those tools are available and whether your current equipment suits the situation.

That statement does not establish a universal recipe list, ingredient route, enemy-by-enemy counter, or required consumable. Do not assume that every fight demands a particular formula. Use preparation to reduce surprises, then adjust your habits based on what your own playthrough teaches you.

Use crafting screens as planning checkpoints

Whenever you return to a merchant, workbench, or other crafting interface, treat the visit as a short audit:

  • Look at newly acquired materials and equipment.
  • Identify items that support the encounters you are choosing to pursue.
  • Replace or improve gear when the game makes a meaningful option available to you.
  • Keep enough flexibility for exploration rather than spending every resource immediately.

The exact recipes, component locations, and item statistics are version- and system-specific details that are not established by the official overview used for this guide. Consult the in-game descriptions for the edition you installed instead of relying on a generic checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose skills around the way you actually play

The current official description highlights an overhauled skill tree with flexibility and a greater impact on play style. That supports experimentation, not a single mandatory build. At each meaningful upgrade, ask which activity you expect to do for the next several hours:

  • More combat: favor an upgrade that makes the encounters you are choosing feel more comfortable.
  • More exploration: favor options that help you remain prepared while moving between activities.
  • More Gwent and social stops: keep your progression choices from forcing you into a combat style you do not enjoy during the quieter parts of a region.
  • Mixed play: alternate choices rather than committing early to a theoretical end-state.

Resist copying an exact skill order from a different edition, difficulty, or play style. The available evidence does not document an objectively optimal sequence, and your preferred balance of story, exploration, preparation, and Gwent is itself a valid design constraint.

Decide how quickly to advance the story

There are two legitimate pacing styles. They are preferences, not tested performance categories.

Approach Best for players who want Trade-off
Story-forward Frequent main-quest momentum with occasional Gwent, crafting, and nearby exploration. Fewer optional activities are handled during each visit, so the world may feel less thoroughly sampled.
Region-first Longer local circuits, more gathering, and regular card-game stops before the next major story beat. The main narrative advances more slowly, and distant or postponed activities can accumulate.
Alternating A sustainable rhythm: one or two local activities, a preparation check, a Gwent match when available, then a story step. You must decide when a region is “complete enough” instead of clearing every visible marker.

The alternating approach is usually the easiest way to keep all three priorities visible. If it starts to feel like a checklist, switch to a story-forward session; if the story is pulling you through areas too quickly, spend the next session on a local circuit.

Use a practical session plan

For a 30-minute session

  1. Load at your current hub and review the nearest story objective.
  2. Choose one nearby optional activity or unexplored route.
  3. Collect materials and inspect any equipment you naturally encounter.
  4. Play Gwent if an opportunity appears and you have time.
  5. Return to the hub or save at a sensible stopping point.

For a one- to two-hour session

  1. Begin with a preparation check: swords, available consumables, equipment, and skill choice.
  2. Complete a local circuit that combines a story step with optional activities.
  3. Pause for Gwent in each settlement where you want it to be part of the role-play.
  4. Use a crafting interface when you return, then decide whether to continue outward or advance the main quest.
  5. End by writing one sentence about your next destination or unfinished activity.

For a completion-minded session

Define the boundary first. “Everything in this valley” is a workable boundary; “everything on the entire map” is not. Within that boundary, prioritize activities that are close together, then leave distant markers for a later return. This keeps collecting and crafting useful without turning travel into repetitive maintenance.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Buying the wrong edition assumption

Symptom: You expect the expansions or upgraded files to be present, but the platform shows a different package or missing add-ons.

Correction: Check the account’s library entry, installed-content list, and regional storefront details. Resolve ownership or installation differences before investing time in a new campaign.

Trying to clear every marker immediately

Symptom: The main story stalls and exploration feels like administrative work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Limit each outing to a local circuit and keep a short list of postponed activities. Advance the story once you have completed the nearby items that genuinely interest you.

Treating crafting as a separate farming job

Symptom: You spend long stretches collecting without a clear preparation goal.

Correction: Gather during routes you already want to travel, then use crafting interfaces as checkpoints. If an item has no immediate role in your chosen activities, leave it for later rather than inventing a grind.

Following an unverified Gwent route

Symptom: A guide promises a best deck, exact card locations, or a perfect opponent order that does not match your edition or playthrough.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Use your own log and the game’s current descriptions. The official overview confirms Gwent’s place in the world but does not substantiate a universal deck path or card checklist.

Locking into a build too early

Symptom: Skill choices support a hypothetical endgame rather than the activities you currently enjoy.

Correction: Re-evaluate at each upgrade and choose for the next region or session. Flexibility is a stated feature of the skill system, so use it instead of treating an early choice as a permanent identity.

When to bring the expansions into your plan

The current Remastered product information says Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included. That tells you what the updated package contains, not when you should begin either story. No single expansion sequence is established here as objectively correct, so do not force an early start merely because the content is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first exploration-focused run, keep the base campaign as your anchor. When you later decide to enter an expansion, treat that as a deliberate change of scope: finish the local activity you care about, review your equipment and skills, and make a new save. If you choose a standalone expansion start, remember that it is a different entry point from the campaign routine described above.

A first-session checklist

  • Verify the platform listing and installed content for your account and region.
  • Start the regular base-game campaign if you want the full progression arc.
  • Choose a nearby hub and make one local exploration circuit.
  • Collect materials and equipment encountered naturally.
  • Review elixirs, blade oils, and both sword types before a demanding encounter.
  • Play Gwent whenever an opportunity fits your session.
  • Choose skills for the play style you are using now, not an unverified “perfect” order.
  • Return to the main story when the local area feels complete enough.
  • Record one postponed activity or next destination before stopping.

The guiding principle

A Gwent-, crafting-, and exploration-focused playthrough works when those systems influence where you go and when you advance, without becoming obligations. Explore a manageable area, prepare with what you have, accept the card-game detours that interest you, and let your choices determine the pace. The world is built around encounters and consequences; your route should preserve that uncertainty rather than replace it with a rigid checklist.
