To stake NEAR, delegate tokens to a validator’s staking pool from a compatible NEAR wallet or staking interface. You choose the validator, enter the amount, approve the transaction, and then monitor the position and accumulated rewards. Your result is not a guaranteed APY: the effective return changes with network-wide staking, the validator’s performance, and the pool’s fee.
Unstaking also requires a waiting period rather than an instant withdrawal. Older NEAR guidance describes four complete epochs—roughly 48–72 hours in that material—so check the live wallet and pool terms before committing funds. The instructions below explain the durable process while identifying which historical details must be rechecked in the current interface.

What NEAR staking actually is
Native NEAR staking is delegation. You keep control of your wallet while assigning NEAR to a validator’s pool. The validator performs network consensus work, and delegators receive a share of the pool’s staking rewards after the applicable pool fee. You do not need to operate validator hardware or maintain a server to delegate.

Check these conditions before delegating
- Use a wallet that supports NEAR staking. Confirm that the wallet currently exposes staking or validator delegation, not merely NEAR transfers.
- Keep transaction funds separate. Leave enough unstaked NEAR for network fees and ordinary transfers. If every token is delegated, a later transaction may be inconvenient even though the stake itself remains intact.
- Confirm the validator and pool. Read the current commission, recent reliability information and operating details shown by the wallet or a trustworthy live data source.
- Understand the release delay. Treat the older four-epoch estimate as historical guidance. Verify the current number of epochs, how an unstake is requested, and when a second withdrawal action is required.
- Record the account and recovery method. Back up the wallet’s recovery material offline and test that you can identify the correct NEAR account before moving funds.
- Decide how much liquidity you need. Money needed within a few days should not be delegated without first checking the current unbonding process.
How to stake NEAR: the practical sequence
1. Open the wallet’s staking area
Unlock the wallet, select the NEAR account that holds the tokens, and open the current menu labeled Staking, Validators, Delegate, or an equivalent term. If no staking option appears, do not send NEAR to an unfamiliar address as a substitute. Check whether the wallet has discontinued native staking support or requires a separate official staking interface.
2. Review the validator list
Open several validator profiles before choosing one. Capture the displayed commission, activity or performance indicators, total delegated stake and any operating notes. A zero-fee entry is not automatically superior: a validator that produces poorly or changes terms can deliver a weaker net result than a consistently operated pool with a modest fee.
3. Enter the delegation amount
Choose the amount of NEAR to delegate, leaving a balance for transaction fees and normal use. Check the amount in both NEAR and any fiat estimate shown by the wallet. Confirm that you are delegating—not sending tokens directly to a person or an address supplied in a chat message.
4. Inspect the transaction summary
Before signing, verify the account, validator or staking-pool identity, amount, network fee and any warning about minimum balances. Read the wallet’s confirmation screen in full. If the validator name, address or fee differs from the profile you reviewed, cancel and investigate instead of approving.
5. Approve and wait for confirmation
Sign the transaction using the wallet’s normal approval flow. Wait for the wallet to show a confirmed transaction; a pending screen is not proof that delegation completed. Save the transaction identifier if the interface provides one, since it helps support staff or a block explorer locate the operation.
6. Verify the position
Return to the staking dashboard and confirm that the delegated amount appears under the chosen validator. The historical wallet guide also describes separate views for unclaimed rewards, funds pending release and funds ready to withdraw. Current software may combine or rename these states, but you should be able to identify whether your principal is active, being released or available.

How to choose a NEAR validator
Validator selection is a risk-and-liquidity decision, not a race to find the largest pool. Compare the following items using current data at the time you delegate:
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | Current percentage or fee shown for the pool, and whether it is deducted from validator rewards | A higher fee reduces the portion of rewards passed to delegators; fees can change. |
| Performance | Recent uptime, production or participation indicators supplied by the wallet or live network data | The older NEAR economics explanation links validator production performance with rewards. Historical thresholds should not be treated as current rules. |
| Operating transparency | Published operator identity, contact channel, maintenance notices and a clear fee policy | Transparent operators make it easier to understand outages and fee changes. |
| Pool size and concentration | Total delegated stake and how concentrated your own delegation would be | Choosing only the biggest pool can increase concentration. NEAR’s earlier staking announcement encouraged a diverse validator set. |
| Unstaking terms | Current release epochs, withdrawal steps and any pool-specific instructions | Your practical access to funds depends on the staking implementation, not just the headline reward. |
Check the fee immediately before signing and again during periodic reviews. A displayed fee is a current setting, not a lifetime promise. If the wallet shows a validator with missing or stale performance data, treat that as an information gap and investigate before delegating a large amount.
How staking rewards are calculated
Your gross reward comes from the pool’s share of network staking rewards. The amount credited to you depends on how much you delegated, how much total NEAR is staked across the network, the validator’s production performance and the pool’s commission. As total network stake changes, the reward attributable to each token can change even when your balance does not.
A simple planning approximation is:
estimated net reward = delegated amount × applicable network reward rate × (1 − pool fee)
This is a planning formula, not a quote from the protocol. The network rate and validator performance are variable, and the wallet may account for rewards or fees in a way that differs from a simple daily accrual calculation. Use the current staking interface for the actual credited amount.

Why old APY numbers are misleading
NEAR’s 2020 staking announcement described a 4.5% annual inflation rate. That figure was a network-level, historical description—not a guaranteed return for a delegator and not a current APY. An older protocol-economics explainer said validators as a group were paid a fixed 90% of approximately 5% of total supply annualized. That statement is likewise historical and should not be presented as today’s yield.

Neither number accounts for your chosen pool’s current fee, production record, changes in total stake or any changes made to the protocol since publication. The available material does not establish an authoritative live NEAR staking rate or calculator value. If a wallet displays an estimate, record the date, assumptions and whether the number is gross or net before using it for planning.
What to monitor after staking
- Reward crediting: Confirm that the position shows rewards or an expected accrual after the interface’s normal update cycle.
- Commission changes: Recheck the validator’s fee because a later change can alter your net result.
- Performance notices: Investigate missed production, maintenance or reliability warnings rather than waiting for a large balance discrepancy.
- Network conditions: Recalculate expectations when the amount of total staked NEAR or protocol economics changes.
Unstaking, waiting and withdrawing
Unstaking normally has at least two conceptual stages: request release, then withdraw once the release period ends. Older NEAR materials describe four full epochs, approximately 48–72 hours in those sources. That timing is historical; the current period may differ, and a wallet or staking contract may present the steps differently.
Before you request an unstake
- Open the active staking position and read the current release estimate.
- Confirm whether the wallet lets you unstake all or only a specified amount.
- Leave enough unstaked NEAR to pay the release and withdrawal transactions.
- Check whether rewards are claimed automatically, remain in the position, or require a separate action.
- Save the request time and transaction identifier so you can track the expected release window.
During the release period
The requested amount may appear as pending release rather than as spendable balance. Do not treat a successful unstake transaction as immediate liquidity. Avoid sending the pending amount elsewhere or repeatedly submitting another request unless the wallet specifically instructs you to do so.
When the funds become available
After the wallet marks the amount ready, use its Withdraw, Withdraw unstaked, or equivalent control. Verify the destination account and network fee, then confirm the transaction. If the interface shows that funds are ready but the withdrawal button is disabled, check for a required wallet update, a remaining epoch boundary or a separate reward-claim step before contacting support.
Wallet security and optional hardware custody
A hardware wallet is optional, not a prerequisite for native NEAR delegation. The NEAR wallet guide mentions adding a Ledger hardware device, but compatibility depends on the specific model, firmware and current wallet integration. Confirm those details from current documentation before purchasing or connecting any device.
- Download wallet software only from the publisher’s current official distribution channel.
- Never reveal a seed phrase, private key or hardware-wallet approval code to a validator operator or support account.
- Read the transaction on the device screen; reject an address or amount that does not match the wallet summary.
- Use a small test delegation if you are unfamiliar with the interface.
- Ignore unsolicited messages promising a guaranteed NEAR APY or asking you to “activate” rewards by sending tokens.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The staking option is missing
Confirm that you are using a NEAR account rather than an account on another network, update the wallet through its official channel, and check whether staking was moved to a separate interface. Do not improvise by transferring funds to an address advertised in a forum or direct message.

The validator’s fee looks different after selection
Cancel the transaction and reopen the validator profile. Fees can change, and a list may have refreshed while you were reviewing it. Approve only when the fee and validator identity on the final confirmation screen match your decision.
Rewards appear lower than expected
Compare the credited amount with the date you delegated, the current pool fee and recent validator performance. An old annual percentage cannot be used to calculate a current daily result. Also check whether the displayed figure is gross, net, claimed or still unclaimed.
Unstaked NEAR is not spendable
Look for a pending-release or epoch countdown state. The older four-epoch guidance means a delay of roughly two to three days in those materials, not an instant transfer. Wait for the current interface to mark the funds ready, then complete any required withdrawal transaction.
The balance does not update
Refresh the staking position, reconnect the wallet, and compare the transaction status using the identifier saved at approval. If the network confirms the transaction but the wallet remains stale, use the wallet’s documented support route and provide the account and transaction identifier—never your recovery phrase.

veNEAR was a separate House of Stake participation program, not an automatic extension of native validator staking. The cited update says that program concluded on March 19, 2026, with outstanding claims available only until June 17, 2026. It should not be advertised as an active ongoing staking yield.

NEAR AI staking-based credits
A July 30, 2026 NEAR AI post described staking NEAR to receive recurring AI-compute credits, with capital returned after unstaking. That is a service-payment mechanism rather than native validator reward income. Availability, eligibility, credit amounts and release terms must be checked in the current service documentation before relying on it.
A disciplined review routine
After delegating, set a recurring review rather than checking only when markets move:
- Verify the validator’s current fee and recent performance information.
- Confirm that rewards are being credited and note whether they are claimed or unclaimed.
- Check that the pool still meets your operating-transparency and concentration preferences.
- Review the current unstaking and withdrawal timing before you need liquidity.
- Reassess the position if the validator changes commission, stops producing reliably or becomes difficult to verify.
Keep a private record of delegation date, amount, validator, displayed fee and transaction identifiers. This makes it easier to reconcile rewards and to demonstrate what happened if a wallet interface changes.

Delegation can suit a holder who accepts variable returns, can leave the tokens unavailable during the release period and is willing to monitor validator terms. It is a poor fit for funds that must remain immediately spendable, for anyone seeking a guaranteed interest rate, or for a user unwilling to verify changing fees and validator status.
Make the decision using the current validator data and the current wallet’s release estimate. Historical percentages explain how NEAR’s early economics were described, but they cannot substitute for a live rate, a current fee or a confirmed withdrawal timeline.
