Helium’s documented way to “stake” HNT is to lock it in Realms for governance voting power called veHNT—not to earn a guaranteed yield. Hotspot rewards are a separate way HNT is earned through eligible network activity. To lock tokens, you need HNT, a Solana-compatible wallet and SOL for transaction fees; check the live Realms screen and proposal before signing because Helium warns that its governance guide may not fully reflect the post-migration network.
What staking HNT means on Helium
Helium’s governance guide describes staking as locking HNT through Realms. The lock provides veHNT voting power so token holders can participate in governance proposals. - HNT in a wallet that can interact with Solana applications.
- A Solana-compatible wallet. Helium recommends Helium Wallet for Helium users, while its guide says other Solana-compatible wallets can perform the described functions.
- SOL for on-chain costs. Solana transactions require SOL for fees; locking and account creation may also involve rent. The exact amount varies by transaction and network, and the cited documentation does not state a fixed fee. See Helium’s Solana token documentation.
How to lock HNT in Realms
Helium’s documented flow uses the following steps. Its guide cautions that it has not been fully updated to reflect the network after the April 18, 2023 migration to Solana, so labels and prompts in the live interface may differ. Review the current transaction details rather than signing based only on a walkthrough.

- Acquire HNT and make it available in a Solana-compatible wallet.
- Keep enough SOL in that wallet for transaction fees and any account rent the transaction requires.
- Open Helium Realms and connect the wallet.
- Open “my governance power”, then choose “Lock Tokens” if those labels remain in the current interface.
- Select the HNT amount, lock duration and lock mode. Confirm the terms shown in Realms.
- Review the wallet’s transaction details and sign only if they match the action you intend to take.
- To vote, find an active proposal in Realms and cast your vote using the connected wallet.

Choose a lock duration and countdown mode
The guide documents lock durations from six months to four years. Its two modes differ in when the lock countdown begins:

The documented range is six months to four years. The guide does not provide enough information to calculate an individual’s current voting power or exact unlock outcome, so use the terms shown in the current Realms interface before committing.
How governance locks differ from Hotspot rewards
Helium uses “rewards” for a separate network-operator activity: Hotspots can earn HNT for eligible work, including carrying data. Helium tracks rewards for rewardable entities, which can then be claimed. That is not a payment generated simply by locking HNT in Realms. Details are in Helium’s rewardable entities documentation.

HNT’s role in the network
HNT is Helium’s native protocol token. Helium migrated from its own blockchain to Solana on April 18, 2023. HNT is used by Hotspot hosts and operators and can be burned to produce Data Credits, a USD-pegged utility token used for network data-transfer fees. Helium describes a two-year halving schedule and a Net Emissions mechanism that responds to HNT burned, subject to a cap. These are network-level token mechanics, not a calculation of what a governance participant will earn. See The Helium Network Token documentation.
Helium’s emissions table lists a target of 7,500,000 HNT for the year beginning August 1, 2025, and the same target for the year beginning August 1, 2026. These are scheduled network emissions, not staking returns or a per-holder reward estimate. Helium’s token documentation provides the schedule.
