Before buying a game, check its store listing and rating for purchase notices, price out the extras you actually want, and read the terms for any trial or subscription. Then compare the full expected cost—not just the base price—and confirm what the purchase includes and how long you can access it.
Check the rating and store listing for purchase notices
In the U.S., ESRB labels can help flag paid digital content. Look for “In-Game Purchases” on the box, digital product page, or ESRB rating search. The notice can cover items such as virtual currency, add-ons, cosmetics, and season passes. ESRB’s ratings guide explains its rating information.

“Includes Random Items” signals that some purchases can award items whose contents are not known in advance. A notice is a useful prompt to investigate, not a guarantee that every possible charge is listed there: ESRB says older-rated games may not carry purchase notices even when purchases are present. ESRB said in 2020 that these disclosures can help consumers make more informed decisions before buying or downloading a game (ESRB announcement).
Calculate the price of the game and the extras
Treat the base price as one part of the total. Check the product page and in-game store for expansions, cosmetics, season passes, optional currency, and paid gameplay content. Decide which items matter to you and add their prices to the amount due at checkout.

Translate virtual currency into real money
Currency is often sold in bundles, so compare the real-money price of the bundle with the amount needed for the item you want. If the item costs more currency than the smallest bundle provides, work out the cost of the bundle or bundles you would actually need. Do not assume leftover currency has value to you unless you expect to spend it on something else.
Separate optional content from required costs
Check whether a pass or add-on is optional, whether it includes the content you want, and whether gameplay features are sold separately. Prices and bundles are specific to each game and store, so the listing and checkout are the places to verify current amounts.

Look for random-reward odds before paying
If a purchase offers a randomized item, look for odds information before spending. Google Play requires advance odds disclosure close to purchases for randomized virtual items in its ecosystem; that policy should not be treated as a rule for every platform or game. Read trial and subscription terms before starting
A free or discounted trial can turn into a paid recurring charge. Before accepting, find the trial end date, the price afterward, the billing interval, whether renewal is automatic, and how to cancel. Also check whether the subscription is required to play or only adds particular services or content.

- Confirm whether billing recurs monthly, annually, or on another schedule.
- Find the cancellation route for the account or platform where you subscribed; deleting a game may not cancel a subscription.
- Set a reminder ahead of renewal and check your payment statement for charges.
Terms and cancellation steps vary by service and region. Google Play’s subscription guidance describes its own ecosystem; check the terms shown for your purchase rather than assuming they apply elsewhere (Google Play subscriptions).
Confirm what the purchase includes and how long access lasts
A subscription does not necessarily include every game feature, expansion, or in-game purchase. Read its included-content list and any exclusions before treating it as the full cost of playing.

Digital access can also depend on the account or platform used to buy or play a game. A digital purchase should not automatically be treated as permanent, platform-independent ownership. Review the store’s terms and the game’s account requirements; for U.S. consumers, the FTC’s video game guidance discusses purchases and access considerations.
Use purchase controls for family accounts
For a child or shared device, check the game’s rating and reviews and use the phone, tablet, console, or account controls to disable purchases or require a password or approval. The FTC recommends these steps for U.S. consumers; the available controls differ by device and platform (FTC guidance).

Do a final cost check at checkout
Before confirming, compare the checkout total with your intended purchase. Include the game, selected add-ons, currency, and any subscription or recurring plan you chose. Make sure the renewal date and amount are clear, and that the content and access terms match what you expect. If a price, renewal term, or included feature is unclear, pause and check the store or game terms before paying.
