To reduce the risk of buying fake Pokémon merchandise online, check who is selling the item, look for photos of the actual product, compare its packaging with official images, and treat an unusually low price as a warning—not proof. For Pokémon cards, Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often visible when held up to a bright light, but neither that check nor any single listing clue guarantees authenticity.
Screen the listing before you buy
Use several checks together. A seller profile, a convincing price, or polished photos cannot authenticate an item on its own.

Identify the seller and the protections
- Check who is actually selling and fulfilling the order, along with available contact details and seller history.
- Read the marketplace’s shipping, return, refund, and dispute rules. Note any deadlines before you buy; the U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends checking a marketplace’s protections and procedures in advance. FTC marketplace guidance.
- Ask questions in writing if the listing is unclear, and keep the seller’s replies.
- Do not treat star ratings as authentication. The FTC warns that reviews and ratings can be fake or misleading, so weigh them alongside the seller’s identity, photos, description, price, and protections.
Inspect the photos and description
Prefer clear views of the actual item, its packaging, and details relevant to the product. A listing that relies only on stock images or leaves out useful views gives you less basis to assess what the seller is offering. The FTC notes that without actual-item photos, a shopper cannot check the item’s condition or be sure the seller has it. For sealed products, photographs still cannot prove what is inside or establish authenticity.
Compare the item and packaging with official Pokémon product images. Pokémon Support recommends becoming familiar with the appearance of official decks and products. Read the wording carefully, too: the official Pokémon Card Game notice describes unauthorized products using Pokémon TCG works and trademarks offered under labels such as “replica” and “metal cards.” That notice is specifically about those protected TCG works and marks; those words alone do not establish that every product using them is counterfeit.

Use price as a warning, not a verdict
Pokémon Support warns that fake booster packs can be difficult to distinguish and says a price dramatically below suggested retail is a near-certain warning that a pack may be counterfeit. The FTC likewise cautions that expensive brand-name bargains can be counterfeit or stolen. A low price is a risk signal, not conclusive proof that a particular listing is fake.
Pay in a way that leaves recourse
Prefer a credit card or a secure payment system with buyer protections. Avoid methods the FTC identifies as unsafe for marketplace purchases, including gift cards, cash reload cards, and cryptocurrency. Before paying, understand how to report a problem and what refund or dispute deadlines apply.

Check whether the seller is an official or verifiable channel
The U.S. Pokémon Center Support page, updated June 24, 2026, identifies Pokémon Center, Pokémon Automated Retail Vending Machines, limited-time deals with major retailers such as Target and GameStop, and existing mass-market retail partnerships for Pokémon TCG cards as stated channels. It says Pokémon does not currently offer licensing or wholesale pricing to smaller retailers for merchandise, with Pokémon TCG cards as an exception distributed through existing mass-market retailer partnerships. As general counterfeit-prevention advice, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recommends buying directly from brand owners or authorized retailers. If you already have a Pokémon card
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often visible through bright light and suggests holding a card up to a bright light as a check. It also suggests asking a local shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate a card you suspect is counterfeit. These are checks, not guarantees: a single visual clue should not be treated as a definitive verdict.
Specialist guidance also cautions that no test is completely conclusive, and some checks are impossible when an online listing omits relevant views such as the card back. Avoid destructive tests. This advice is specific to trading cards; it should not be applied as an authentication method for plush toys, figures, apparel, or other Pokémon merchandise. Pokémon Support also warns that fake sealed booster packs can be very difficult to discern, so a check of an individual card does not authenticate a sealed pack. If the item is misrepresented or does not arrive
- Save the listing, product photos, order details, and seller communications while they are available.
- Contact the seller through the marketplace and follow its refund, return, or dispute process. Keep your messages and records.
- If the marketplace process does not resolve the problem, check whether your payment provider offers a dispute option and note its deadline. The FTC advises buyers to understand these protections before purchasing.
There is no verified prevalence figure here for how often Pokémon merchandise sold online is counterfeit. The practical approach is to assess the seller, listing evidence, price, and buyer protections together rather than rely on an unsupported percentage or one supposed authentication trick.
