How to Spot Fake Grocery Delivery and Store-Outage Messages

Do not use the link, phone number, or sign-in button in an unexpected grocery message. Treat the alert as an unverified claim, then open the retailer or delivery service’s app yourself or type its known web address into your browser. Check the order or service status there. If anything is still unclear, contact support through contact details you found independently.

Why a plausible grocery message can still be a scam

Fraudulent messages are designed to look like routine service updates: an order supposedly failed, a driver needs a new delivery time, a payment must be updated, or a store is temporarily offline. The sender may copy a retailer’s name, colors, logo, and writing style. Those details are easy to imitate and do not authenticate the message.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has warned that fake delivery notices can send people to look-alike websites that collect login, payment, or other personal information. A message can therefore be dangerous even when you have recently placed a real order. The scammer may be guessing, using information from a data breach, or sending the same alert to thousands of people.

Unexpected urgency is another design feature. “Confirm within 30 minutes,” “your account will be closed,” or “pay a small redelivery fee” is intended to make you act before you verify. An outage claim can use the same pressure by implying that you must sign in, re-enter a card, or call a number immediately.

There is no visual test that proves a message is genuine. Caller ID, a familiar sender name, and a recognizable logo can all be spoofed. Verification must happen through a channel you reached independently.

Quick decision: trust the supplied route or verify independently?

Question Message-supplied route Independently reached service
Who initiated the contact? An unexpected text, email, call, or notification arrived. You opened the known app or typed the known address yourself.
Where does it take you? A link, QR code, callback number, or sign-in button supplied in the alert. The retailer or delivery service’s app, bookmark, or address you already know.
What is being requested? A password, card or bank details, personal information, or a one-time code. You review order or service information without disclosing credentials to the message sender.
What should you do? Do not click, call, reply, or enter information. Check status and contact support using details shown in the genuine service.

FTC guidance supports the independently reached route. For a delivery question, go to the site where you placed the order and look up shipping or delivery status there. If you think a request could be legitimate, contact the business directly using a phone number you know is real or a website or app you found yourself.

Warning signs in grocery delivery messages

An unexpected problem followed by a link

“Delivery failed,” “address incomplete,” “reschedule now,” and “payment declined” are effective phishing themes because they offer a plausible explanation for why you should click. The link may lead to a page that copies the retailer’s branding but is controlled by the sender. Do not use the link to investigate the claim. Open the genuine service separately and compare the order status there.

Pressure, threats, or an unusually short deadline

Scammers want to prevent a calm check. Threats of cancellation, loss of account access, a missed delivery fee, or a rapidly expiring offer are reasons to pause, not reasons to comply. A real operational problem can still exist, but urgency in a message does not prove that it does.

A request for sensitive information or a verification code

Stop if an unexpected message asks for a password, full payment-card or bank details, government identification data, or a one-time verification code. The FTC specifically warns against sharing an email verification code with someone who contacted you unexpectedly. A code can let an impostor complete a login or reset even when the password itself was not revealed.

A familiar sender name, logo, or tone

Displayed sender names and logos are not reliable authentication. An address can be made to resemble a legitimate business, and caller ID can be falsified. Inspecting a name or logo is not a substitute for checking the order in the real app or website.

A request to pay outside the normal checkout process

Be especially cautious when a delivery alert directs you to a new payment page, asks for a small “redelivery” charge, or tells you to transfer money by an unfamiliar method. Verify whether any charge appears in the account you reached independently. Never enter card or bank information into the message’s destination.

How to check whether a delivery text is real

  1. Stop at the message. Do not tap its link, scan its QR code, call its number, reply, or use its sign-in button. If you opened it accidentally, close the page without entering information.
  2. Recall what you actually ordered. Note the retailer, order date, expected window, and delivery method from your own records. Do not use a detail supplied only by the alert as proof that it is genuine.
  3. Open the official app yourself. Launch the retailer or delivery service from your device’s installed app. If you do not use an app, type the known web address manually or use a bookmark you created previously. Do not follow a search advertisement or a newly supplied address when you are trying to verify a suspicious alert.
  4. Review the order page. Look for the order number, payment status, delivery window, substitutions, driver updates, or cancellation notice. A real problem should be reflected in the account you reached independently, although the timing of updates can vary.
  5. Check the account’s message center. If the service has an inbox or notification area, compare the alert with messages shown there. The absence of a matching notice does not by itself prove fraud, but it is a reason to use support rather than the original message.
  6. Contact support through an independent source. Use the phone number or help option displayed after you sign in to the genuine service, or a number printed on an official statement or receipt you already possess. Do not call the number in the suspicious alert.
  7. Record and report the message. Keep screenshots and the sender details if you may need them for your bank, provider, or a report. Use your carrier’s spam-reporting feature when available, then delete the message.

If the independently reached account shows no corresponding order or issue, treat the alert as fraudulent. Do not continue a conversation with the sender to “test” it.

How to verify a claimed store outage

A store-outage message may claim that ordering, pickup, delivery, payment, or a loyalty account is unavailable. The same independent-check rule applies, but an outage can affect many customers, so look for service information in more than one genuine channel.

  1. Open the retailer’s app or official website independently. Look for a service banner, status notice, store-hours information, or an account message. Do not use the outage alert’s link.
  2. Check the specific location and service. A website may show that one store, pickup option, or delivery area is affected while other locations continue operating. Confirm that the notice matches your store, order, and service type.
  3. Review an existing order from your account. A genuine outage may change a pickup window or delivery estimate. Check the order page rather than relying on a text asking you to sign in again.
  4. Use independently sourced support details. Contact the store or customer-support team through the app, official website, or a receipt you already have. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal grocery-industry outage policy or a standard alert sender, so do not assume that a particular channel is official for every retailer.
  5. Wait for corroboration before taking a financial action. An outage should not force you to disclose a password, card number, bank information, or one-time code through an unexpected message. If a payment issue is real, resolve it inside the authenticated account or with support reached independently.

A genuine outage and a fake message can coexist: a service may be unavailable while the alert you received is still a phishing attempt. Verify both the operational status and the authenticity of the contact method.

What not to disclose

  • Passwords: Never type a password into a page reached from an unexpected alert. Change it only through the genuine service you opened independently.
  • Payment or bank details: Do not provide a full card number, security code, bank-account details, or a transfer authorization in response to an unsolicited delivery or outage message.
  • One-time verification codes: Treat an unexpected request for a code as a stop signal. The code may be the final step an impostor needs to enter your account.
  • Personal information: Be cautious with date of birth, address, identity numbers, and other details that can be combined with stolen data.

Legitimate support may need to verify some information when you contact it through a known-good channel. That is different from handing data to an unknown sender who initiated contact.

If you clicked, replied, or entered information

You clicked but entered nothing

Stop interacting with the message and close the page. Do not download files or install an app offered by the page. Open the real service separately and check the order. If the page prompted a download or you notice unusual device behavior, use your operating system’s security tools and seek assistance from the device or account provider.

You entered a password

  1. Open the legitimate service directly, not through the message, and change the exposed password.
  2. Change the same password anywhere else you reused it. Reuse can let an attacker move from a grocery account to email, banking, or another service.
  3. Review the account’s recent sign-ins, orders, saved payment methods, addresses, and contact details. Remove changes you did not make.
  4. Enable the provider’s legitimate multifactor-authentication or account-security options, if available.

You entered card or bank information

Contact the card issuer or bank through the phone number on the physical card, an existing statement, or its independently opened official app. Explain that the information was submitted to a suspected scam and ask what monitoring, replacement, payment cancellation, or dispute steps apply. Watch statements and account alerts for unauthorized activity.

You shared a verification code

Use the genuine account’s security controls immediately, change the password, review active sessions, and contact the provider through an independent channel. Tell the provider that an unexpected code was disclosed; it can advise on account recovery and session revocation.

You shared personal information

Document what was disclosed and when. Follow the affected provider’s account-security instructions and monitor for identity misuse. The FTC directs people who believe their identity information was stolen to IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan.

You lost money or suspect fraud

Contact the relevant financial institution promptly through an official channel, preserve the message and transaction records, and report the suspected scam to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. How to handle calls, emails, and app notifications

Phone calls and voicemails

Do not rely on caller ID. If a caller claims to represent a store or delivery service, end the call and dial a number you found independently. Never read a one-time code or card details to a caller who contacted you unexpectedly.

Email

Do not use the email’s buttons or attachments to verify an order. Open the service in a new window or the official app. A message that appears in your inbox can still be a spoofed identity or a link to a look-alike site.

Push notifications and QR codes

A push alert or QR code can open a browser destination just like a text-message link. Treat it as unverified unless you initiated the action and can confirm it inside the genuine app. Scan only when you know what service generated the code and where it should lead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common scenarios and the safest response

Message says Risk Safe response
“Your grocery delivery failed—reschedule here.” A look-alike page may capture login or card details. Check the order in the independently opened app or website; contact support there.
“Your account is locked because of an outage.” Urgency may be used to collect a password or verification code. Sign in only through the known service and review security notices.
“Pay a small fee to release your order.” The requested payment may be sent to an impostor. Look for a charge in the real order account and ask support through a known channel.
“Store systems are down; confirm your card to keep delivery.” An outage story can disguise a payment-data request. Verify the outage independently and do not enter card details from the alert.
“Tell me the code we just sent.” The sender may be trying to take over your account. Do not share it; use the real account’s security options and contact the provider.

What the broader scam data does—and does not—show

The FTC reported $470 million in consumer losses to text-message scams in 2024 and said fake package-delivery messages were the most commonly reported type of text scam that year. Those figures are broad text-scam statistics reported by the FTC in 2025. They are not a measurement of grocery scams, store-outage scams, or total actual losses; many incidents are never reported and the categories are wider than grocery delivery.

The practical lesson is limited but important: delivery-themed texts are a documented phishing pattern, so a grocery-specific story should be verified rather than trusted because it sounds familiar.

A printable checklist

  • Did I expect this contact, or did it arrive without my request?
  • Am I being pushed to act immediately?
  • Does it contain a link, QR code, callback number, or attachment?
  • Is it asking for a password, payment details, personal information, or a one-time code?
  • Have I opened the retailer or delivery service independently?
  • Does the order, outage, or account warning appear in that genuine service?
  • Did I contact support using details I found independently?
  • If I already shared information, did I secure the real account, call the bank or card issuer, and report the incident?

If any answer raises concern, leave the message alone and use the known-good route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this grocery delivery text real if I have an order arriving today?

It may be, but the timing does not authenticate it. Open the retailer or delivery service’s app yourself, or type its known website address, and check the order there. Do not use the text’s link or phone number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I click a link about a failed grocery delivery?

No. A failed-delivery link can lead to a look-alike site that captures information. Check the order through the independently opened service and contact support through details shown there.

How do I check if a store-outage message is fake?

Independently open the retailer’s app or official website, look for current service information, check your order, and contact the store or support team using independently sourced details. Do not assume any particular alert channel is universal across retailers.

What should I do if I gave a scammer a verification code?

Use the genuine account’s security controls immediately, change the password, review active sessions and account changes, and contact the provider through an independently found channel. Tell it that an unexpected code was disclosed.
