A dramatic discount is only a bargain if the item, seller, final cost and after-sale terms all hold up. Before paying, verify the product’s exact model and condition, compare its recent and current prices at other sellers, identify who is responsible for the sale, read the delivery and return terms, and use a payment method with a dispute route. A “70% off” label can be meaningless when the reference price was inflated, the listing describes a cheaper variant, or mandatory charges appear at checkout.
The 60-second safety check
Run these checks before you spend time deciding whether an offer is attractive:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Record the exact item: copy the model number or SKU, size, colour, capacity, quantity, condition and included accessories.
- Identify the seller: determine whether the brand, the marketplace itself or an independent third party is actually selling and fulfilling the order.
- Check a meaningful baseline: search the identical item at several sellers and look for its recent price rather than trusting the crossed-out figure.
- Calculate the checkout total: include shipping, taxes, service or handling charges, required accessories and any optional items already placed in the basket.
- Read the delivery and return terms: confirm the promised arrival date, refund conditions, return-shipping responsibility and any restocking fee.
- Choose a payment method with recourse: use a credit card or another method that offers a formal dispute process when available, and leave if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or an unfamiliar payment app.
If an offer fails one of these checks, treat the advertised saving as unproven. A legitimate sale can withstand ordinary questions about price, identity and terms.

Why a large discount percentage proves very little
Find the real comparison price
Retailers commonly show a current price beside a higher “was” price and calculate a percentage reduction from the two. That percentage is useful only when the higher figure represents a genuine, recent price for the same item under comparable conditions. An inflated anchor can make an ordinary price look exceptional.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Use two baselines:
- Recent history: search the exact model and note prices seen over the last few weeks or months. A browser history, price tracker or your own saved screenshots can help, but do not treat any tracker as authoritative without checking the product identity and seller.
- Current alternatives: compare the same model, condition and bundle at several independent sellers. Include shipping and other mandatory charges in each amount.
For example, imagine a listing says an item fell from $200 to $120. If the identical item has regularly sold for $125 elsewhere, the meaningful saving is about $5, not $80. That arithmetic does not prove fraud; it shows why the percentage on the page is not the same as the saving available to you.
Use the EU 30-day rule in its proper context
Under EU consumer guidance, a trader announcing a price reduction must indicate the lowest price it applied during at least the preceding 30 days. This is a jurisdiction-specific requirement, not a universal rule for every country or every website. If you are buying in the EU, look for a reference that complies with that rule and be wary when the page highlights a much older or unexplained “original” price.
The European Commission and consumer-protection authorities in 23 EU countries, Iceland and Norway screened 314 online traders during a 2026 Black Friday and Cyber Monday sweep. They reported that 30% referenced discounts incorrectly. The result describes that screening sample; it is not an estimate that 30% of all online retailers use false discounts.
Do not confuse dynamic pricing with a fake discount
Prices can change with demand, stock, location, timing or customer segment. The US Federal Trade Commission permits dynamic pricing when the information presented is not misleading. A changing price is therefore not, by itself, evidence of deception. Save the displayed price and timestamp if you are comparing an offer, and check whether the seller clearly explains conditions that change the amount.
Understand the narrow US upfront-total rule
The FTC’s specific upfront total-price requirement described in its cited guidance applies to live-event tickets and short-term lodging, not to all ordinary retail goods. For those covered categories, known mandatory charges must be included in the total price; shipping, taxes and optional add-ons may be disclosed later only if they are shown before payment. Do not assume that this particular rule guarantees an all-in price for every type of online purchase.
Verify who is selling the item
Separate the advertisement from the seller
An ad can imitate a familiar retailer while sending you to a different domain or a marketplace seller with no connection to that retailer. Read the address bar, not just the logo or colours in the page design. If the ad opens a shortened or unfamiliar address, close it and navigate independently to the retailer’s known site or app.

On a marketplace, find the fields labelled seller, sold by, shipped by or fulfilled by. A marketplace may host the page while an independent business owns the inventory, sets the price and handles returns. The distinction affects delivery, warranty and who must refund you.
Investigate the seller’s history
Search the exact seller name and the destination domain with terms such as review, complaint and scam. Look for a consistent trading identity, a physical or business address where appropriate, reachable support and reports that describe the same domain. A new domain, copied contact details or a sudden change in the business name deserves extra caution.
Do not treat a clean-looking page, a padlock icon or a social-media advertisement as proof of legitimacy. Encryption protects the connection; it does not establish that the business will ship the product or honour a refund.
Check the seller classification and rights information
EU consumer guidance says marketplaces should identify whether a seller is a private individual or a professional trader and provide clear information about price, shipping, delivery and consumer rights. If those details are missing or contradictory, save a screenshot and ask the marketplace for clarification before ordering. A private seller may not provide the same statutory rights as a professional trader, depending on local law.
Confirm that the listing describes the item you think it does
Match the model, not just the product name
Copy the model number or SKU into a separate search and compare the manufacturer’s stated specifications where available. Similar names can hide major differences in storage, memory, dimensions, power, compatibility, region or included software. A headline image may show the premium version while the selected option is a lower-cost variant.

Watch for bundles and required extras
A low price may cover the main unit without a charger, stand, controller, licence, battery or other component needed for normal use. Conversely, a page can preselect an extended warranty, protection plan or accessory. Remove anything you did not choose and recalculate the total before paying.
During the 2026 European sweep, 36% of the 314 traders attempted to add optional items to consumers’ baskets; 40% of those traders did not clearly request consent. The figures apply to that screening exercise, but they illustrate why the basket—not the product page—is the point at which you should make the final comparison.
Read ratings and reviews as clues, not authentication
Why a high score is insufficient
The FTC says readers generally cannot reliably distinguish a genuine review from a fake one just by looking at it. Reviews can be fabricated, incentivized, copied from another product or manipulated by changing the product attached to an existing listing. A four- or five-star average therefore confirms neither the seller’s identity nor the quality of the exact variant you are buying.

Read a sample of recent and critical reviews, then compare them with independent discussion or retailer pages for the same model. Check whether reviewers mention the correct size, generation, colour or accessory bundle. If many comments describe a different item, the listing may have inherited reviews from a prior product.
Pay attention to timing. An unusually large burst of nearly identical reviews in a short period is a warning sign noted in FTC rule guidance. It is not conclusive by itself—legitimate launches can create clusters—but it warrants verification elsewhere.
Use review details that are hard to fake
- Specific observations about fit, battery life, measurements, packaging or compatibility.
- Photographs that match the advertised model and condition.
- Balanced comments that identify both strengths and limitations.
- Responses from the seller that answer the question rather than repeat marketing text.
Never let reviews override a mismatch in seller identity, model number or return terms. Those are stronger evidence about the transaction you are about to enter.

Inspect the basket and checkout for the real deal
Build an all-in price
Before authorizing payment, write down the displayed item price and add every charge that is mandatory for your order. Depending on the product and destination, that can include shipping, taxes, import or customs charges, service fees, handling, required accessories and currency-conversion costs. If a charge is described as optional, make sure the page has not selected it automatically.
A comparison is meaningful only when each seller’s total is calculated on the same basis. A lower headline amount with expensive shipping may cost more than a higher listing with delivery included.
Confirm delivery promises
Check the stated dispatch date, estimated arrival window, shipping method and delivery location. “In stock” can mean stock at a distant third party rather than immediate dispatch. A very low price is less useful if the item arrives after the event for which you need it or if tracking is unavailable.
Read returns and refunds before paying
Find out how many days you have to return the item, whether it must be unopened, who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies and how the refund is issued. Check exclusions for clearance, personalised, digital or hygiene-sensitive goods. Also identify who receives the return when a marketplace hosts a third-party seller.
Save the policy as a PDF or screenshot with the date. Terms can change after an order, and the version shown when you paid may be important if a dispute follows.

Compare two listings on equal terms
Use this worksheet when deciding between offers. Record the evidence rather than relying on memory or a percentage badge.
| Comparison point | Listing A | Listing B | What to verify |

During the 2026 European sweep, 34% of traders displayed price comparisons, and 60% of those did not clearly explain where their reference prices came from. A blank or vague “original price” field should therefore count as missing evidence, not as proof of a bargain.
A step-by-step workflow for a suspiciously cheap offer
- Pause the ad. Do not enter payment details from a social-media link, pop-up or urgent countdown. Open a new tab or the retailer’s official app independently.
- Capture the offer. Save the product page, seller name, URL, displayed price, countdown, shipping promise and return policy. Include the date and time.
- Search the exact model. Use the model number or SKU, not only the marketing name. Compare at least two other sellers and note condition, bundle and delivery.
- Test the discount claim. Find a recent price and calculate the difference from the current total. In the EU, check the stated lowest price for the preceding 30 days.
- Validate the seller. Search the seller and domain with “review,” “complaint” and “scam.” Confirm whether the marketplace identifies the seller as private or professional.
- Audit the variant. Select the intended size, colour, capacity and quantity. Read the written specification and warranty, and verify that the images show that selection.
- Audit the basket. Remove optional plans and accessories, then include all mandatory shipping, tax and service charges.
- Read the exit terms. Confirm delivery, return deadline, return shipping, restocking fee and refund method. Save the policy.
- Select payment deliberately. Prefer a method with a documented dispute process. Never switch to a payment method solely because the seller insists.
- Recheck before submission. Compare the final order summary with your saved notes. If the seller, item, total or terms changed, stop and investigate again.
Red flags and what they usually indicate
- “Today only” pressure with no verifiable price history: urgency is being used in place of evidence.
- A huge discount on a common item: the reference price may be inflated, or the listing may be for a different condition or variant.
- A domain that resembles a known retailer but is not the retailer’s normal address: the ad may be impersonating a brand.
- No clear seller name, address, return destination or warranty information: accountability is difficult if the item fails to arrive.
- Reviews that suddenly appear in large numbers or describe another product: ratings may have been manipulated or transferred between listings.
- Optional items preselected in the basket: the headline price excludes a consent decision the page is trying to make for you.
- Payment limited to gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or an unfamiliar app: the seller may be avoiding ordinary dispute and refund channels.
- Promises that conflict across pages: a delivery date, warranty or return term that changes between the listing and checkout needs written clarification before purchase.
One warning sign does not establish a scam, but several independent signs should move your decision from “buy now” to “do not proceed until verified.”

Choose a payment route with a dispute process
Where available, a credit card can provide a way to dispute a charge when an item never arrives, according to FTC consumer guidance. Protections vary by issuer, country and transaction, and a dispute is not an automatic refund. Keep the order confirmation, promised delivery date, seller messages, screenshots and tracking information.
Be especially cautious when a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment apps. These methods can be difficult to reverse, and insisting on one is a significant warning sign. Do not send additional money for a supposed customs release, insurance upgrade or refund fee without independently confirming the request.
Act in an evidence-first order
- Contact the seller through the address or support channel shown in the order record, not a new link sent by an unknown account.
- State the problem clearly and request the remedy promised by the listing or policy. Keep the message factual and save the response.
- If the seller does not resolve it, contact the marketplace and follow its dispute deadline.
- Ask your card issuer or payment provider about its dispute process before the applicable deadline. Provide the order, correspondence and evidence that the item was not delivered or did not match the description.
- Report a deceptive advertisement or seller to the consumer-protection authority relevant to your country. Use the authority’s current instructions for the transaction’s location.
Legal and geographic limits to keep in mind
Price-reduction rules, return rights, payment protections, taxes and marketplace duties depend on where the seller and buyer are located and what was purchased. The EU requirement to show the lowest price from the previous 30 days should not be presented as a worldwide rule. Likewise, the FTC’s upfront-total rule cited above covers live-event tickets and short-term lodging, not every retail product.
Cross-border orders can add customs charges, different warranty obligations, longer returns and a dispute process outside your local system. Confirm which law and court, if any, the seller’s terms name, but do not assume a contractual statement removes mandatory consumer rights in your jurisdiction. When the applicable rule is unclear, consult your local consumer regulator before paying a substantial amount.
Bottom line: judge the transaction, not the badge
A sale is credible when the exact item is identifiable, the seller is accountable, the reference price is meaningful, the final total is clear, the delivery and return terms are workable, and the payment method leaves you a realistic remedy. Discount percentages, star ratings and countdown timers are marketing signals; they are not independent proof. Spend the extra minute comparing the same model, auditing the basket and saving the terms. If the seller will not withstand those checks, the safest saving is not making the purchase.
