1. Confirm exactly what the offer includes
Before comparing prices, note the brand, model or manufacturer number, selected size, color or configuration, item condition, seller, and delivery terms. A headline price or discount may apply to a different variation from the one selected. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends recording details such as the model number, size, color, and shipping information when comparison shopping.

2. Check whether the discount is real in context
Use price history, when it is available
On an eligible Amazon product page, look for a price-history link near the displayed price, or use the Alexa for Shopping feature Amazon describes. Compare the current offer with the product’s recent range: a lower price than the usual recent price is more meaningful than a large reduction from a crossed-out reference figure.

Amazon describes 30-, 90-, and 365-day history views. Its feature page says price history is available in the U.S., UK, Canada, and India; as of October 7, 2026, 365-day insights were rolling out in the U.S., UK, and India. Availability and display can vary by product page, so check the page for the item and market you are shopping in. Amazon also reports that more than 50 million customers have checked price history since the feature launched in 2024; that is a usage figure reported by Amazon, not a measure of false discounts or the tool’s accuracy. Understand Amazon’s reference prices
Amazon distinguishes between List Price and Typical, or “Was,” Price. In Amazon’s description, List Price (also called MSRP) is a validated price it can find on Amazon and at other retailers. Typical or “Was” Price is the median price paid on Amazon in the prior 90 days, excluding prices paid during a limited-time deal. Compare the identical item elsewhere
Check the same model, variation, and condition at reputable retailers. A comparison against a different size, generation, bundle, or condition can make an ordinary price look unusually low—or make a good price look less attractive. Compare the actual price offered, not only a percentage or reference price.

Check that the product identifiers, stated condition, included items, delivery estimate, and return terms match what you expect. Review the seller information as one part of that check; the presence of a seller label or badge alone does not guarantee authenticity. The available guidance does not establish any single Amazon label as proof that a product is genuine.

When a listing is unusually cheap for a costly brand-name product, use the price as a prompt to examine the details more closely—not as a verdict. A description that is vague about the model, condition, or what is included is a reason to pause and compare another offer.
4. Read reviews without treating them as proof
Look beyond the star average. Read a selection of reviews from different dates, check reviewer history where available, and look for incentive labels. A sudden cluster of reviews or an account that appears to have reviewed only one product may warrant closer scrutiny, but neither signal proves a review is fake.

The FTC warns that genuine and fake reviews can be difficult to tell apart by appearance alone: “Don’t assume that, just by looking, you can spot the difference between a real review and a fake one.” It recommends considering reviews from multiple sources and being wary of patterns that seem unusual, while recognizing that those patterns are not conclusive. 5. Calculate the final cost and check the conditions
Before ordering, account for the selected item’s price, shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and any fees that apply. Check whether the advertised price depends on a coupon, membership, quantity, or another condition. Confirm the price available to your account and the total shown before payment; do not assume every shopper qualifies for the same promotion.

FTC guidance says businesses may use dynamic pricing when the pricing information is not misleading. Its fee-rule FAQ also says a promotion available only to some consumers should not be reflected in the generally available total price before those consumers qualify. A quick comparison checklist
- Is it the identical model, variation, and condition?
- How does the current price compare with the item’s available recent price history?
- What do reputable sellers charge for the same item?
- What is the final checkout total, including applicable shipping, taxes, and fees?
- Are the seller, description, included items, delivery, and return terms clear?
- Do reviews across dates and sources raise questions that merit checking, without treating any single pattern as proof?
No one badge, chart, seller label, or review pattern settles the question. Use the checks together, and pause when key details or the final price are unclear.
