A steep discount in a social-media ad is a reason to pause and verify—not proof that the deal is fake. Scammers may impersonate a real brand, and an ad appearing in your feed does not mean the brand placed or approved it. Before paying, find out who is actually selling the product, check the offer independently, and use a payment method with a possible dispute route.
Why a brand-name deal in your feed may not be from the brand
Social-media ads can be bought by people impersonating real brands or selling knockoffs. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that platforms do not always thoroughly vet ads or advertisers, so a feed placement is not an endorsement. The FTC puts it plainly: “Anyone can pay to place ads in your social media feed — including scammers impersonating real brands, selling knock-off products, or touting a program to teach you how to invest and beat the stock market.” FTC guidance on social-media ads

That does not mean every unfamiliar seller—or every unusually low price—is fraudulent. It means you should verify the seller and the terms using information you find outside the ad before you buy.
Check the offer before you pay

Identify the actual seller
Look for the company name behind the offer, rather than assuming the product brand is the seller. Search for that seller independently, adding terms such as “scam,” “complaint,” or “review.” Do not rely only on links or claims in the ad. Compare the price elsewhere
Search for the same product through the brand’s independently located website and other sellers. If the advertised price is far lower, treat that as a warning sign to investigate. A low price alone does not establish that an ad is a scam, but an implausibly cheap offer can be a reason to walk away.

Read the transaction terms
Before entering payment details, check whether the seller clearly explains:
- Return and refund terms
- Warranty coverage
- Shipping cost and expected delivery time
- How to contact the company
If important details are missing or there is no usable way to contact the seller, do not proceed.

Consider how the seller wants to be paid
If you decide to buy, the FTC recommends paying by credit card. You may be able to dispute the charge if the order never arrives or is not as described; a dispute is not a guaranteed refund. What reported scam figures do—and do not—show
Consumers reported losing more than $95 million in 2025 to scams that began after they ordered something advertised on social media, according to the FTC’s 2026 report. The FTC says many people do not report scams, so reported losses are likely an underestimate. The figure is not a measure of every loss or the chance that a particular ad is fraudulent. The FTC also reported that more than 40% of people who lost money to a social-media scam in 2025 said they had ordered something they saw in a social-media ad; shopping scams were the most reported type of social-media scam that year.
