How to Spot Fake Black Friday Deals and Track Price Changes

A large discount percentage is not proof of a bargain. Check the exact product’s price history, compare its current total price across sellers, and read the delivery and return terms before you buy. A price alert can tell you when a price changes; it cannot, by itself, tell you whether the new price is good.

How to check whether a Black Friday deal is genuinely good

  1. Match the exact item. Check the model number and details such as size, generation, capacity and bundle contents. A different version can make a comparison misleading.
  2. Check price history. Look at what that product has cost over time, rather than relying on a crossed-out “was” price or the advertised discount. Which? offers guidance on checking deals and has examined sale-item price histories: Which?’s guide to checking Black Friday deals.
  3. Compare the current total at other sellers. Compare the same model and bundle, and include delivery or other unavoidable charges. A price that looks low against a reference price may not be the lowest available offer.
  4. Decide whether the saving suits you. Use the product’s past prices and current competing offers to judge the deal; do not let a countdown or a dramatic percentage make the decision for you.

Which? reported in 2025 that nine in ten Black Friday deals in the set it examined were cheaper or the same price at other times of the year. That finding applies to the deals Which? studied, not to every Black Friday offer. See Which?’s report on its 2025 findings and its Black Friday deal coverage.

Use price history and alerts for different jobs

Price history shows context

A history chart or record can help answer whether today’s price is unusually low for that item. Check that the tracker covers the retailer and product you are considering, and that it identifies the same model or variant. A price record is only as useful as its coverage and product matching.

Alerts notify you of a change

An alert can save repeated checking by notifying you when a tracked price changes. The Federal Trade Commission says, “Some sites let you sign up to get price alerts when prices change.” Coverage varies by service and seller, so confirm that the tracker watches the retailer you intend to buy from; an alert does not establish that the price is a bargain. FTC online shopping advice.

Set a target price based on what you are willing to pay, then wait if the current offer does not meet it and the purchase is not urgent. Alerts are useful for timing; compare the resulting price with the product’s history and other sellers before buying.

Check the complete cost and the seller

Read the terms behind the headline price

  • Check delivery charges and any other unavoidable fees before comparing totals. UK guidance says prices should include charges consumers cannot avoid; see the CMA price-transparency summary.
  • Read the refund and return policy, including who pays return postage and whether a restocking fee applies.
  • Check whether the offer has restrictions, such as a required membership, a limited quantity or a particular payment method.

Verify who is selling it

Confirm the seller’s identity and contact details, especially when a deal comes through an unfamiliar advertisement, message or website. The FTC warns that fake seasonal shopping sites may take payment without sending the advertised goods, or send something different. Review the seller and the terms independently rather than treating an ad or countdown as verification: FTC online shopping guidance and FTC advice on online shopping scams.

What discount statistics do—and do not—tell you

Large-scale findings can be a reason to check prices, but they are not a verdict on an individual listing. In a March 2026 sweep, the European Commission reported that 34% of traders displayed price comparisons; among that subset, 60% did not clearly explain where reference prices came from. Those figures describe the traders covered by the Commission’s sweep, not every online merchant. See the European Commission’s report on the 2026 online-discounts sweep.

Rules and enforcement differ by jurisdiction. UK CMA price-transparency guidance, US FTC consumer advice and a European Commission sweep are not interchangeable legal standards. For a specific legal question, use the relevant authority’s current guidance for your location; the consumer sources cited here do not determine whether a particular seller has broken the law.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a screenshot of an offer page for your own comparison notes, you can capture it with a browser yourself. For a screenshot API instead, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Example request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
