If you are checking a marketplace listing or a pair already in hand, establish the seller’s provenance first, identify the exact Samba version and product code, then compare the shoes with an official reference for that same release. Construction, labels and branding can expose inconsistencies, but no single visual detail proves that a pair is genuine or fake.

What authentication can—and cannot—tell you
Authentication is a risk assessment, not a guaranteed verdict from a checklist. Adidas’s public guidance says its own online shop and official retailers are the best way to ensure authenticity. It also warns that the chance of encountering a fake increases substantially through flea markets, street vendors and internet sellers.

A well-made counterfeit can copy a logo, box or article number, while a genuine shoe can have a production variation, a factory flaw or packaging damage. Treat every physical check as one piece of evidence. A mismatch should trigger further investigation; it should not automatically be presented as conclusive proof.

- Useful secondary evidence: a consistent seller history, original purchase documentation, matching product information and construction that agrees with the exact release.
- Weak evidence on its own: a low or high price, a seller’s reassurance, a QR code, a serial/article code, a clean logo or one close-up photograph.
The goal is to lower your chance of a bad purchase and retain enough evidence for the seller, a payment provider or Adidas if a problem appears.
1. Check the seller and transaction before examining the shoe
Start with the listing and the person or business offering it. A physical inspection is less useful when the seller cannot be identified or the listing disappears after payment.
- Identify the seller. Record the account name, business name, stated location, contact details and marketplace profile. Look for a clear return policy and a transaction record that can be saved.
- Ask about provenance. Find out where the shoes were purchased and whether the seller can provide an original receipt or order confirmation. A credible answer is supporting evidence, not an authenticity guarantee.
- Compare the description with the item. Note the claimed model, colourway, size, condition, product code and release. Save any statement about “authentic,” “deadstock,” “factory direct” or “no returns.”
- Inspect the photos for consistency. Check that the photographs show the actual pair, both shoes, the box and labels rather than only stock images. Ask for additional views when important areas are hidden.
- Save the listing before paying. Keep the URL, screenshots, seller messages, price, payment confirmation and promised shipping or return terms. Online listings can be edited or removed later.
Do not treat a bargain price as proof of a fake, and do not treat an expensive listing as proof of authenticity. The same applies to marketplace badges and a seller’s personal guarantee: they may affect risk, but they do not replace verifiable provenance.
2. Identify the exact Samba version before comparing details
“Samba” is a family of products, not one unchanging specification. Samba OG, Samba Vegan, Samba Classic, collaborations and older releases can differ in materials, logos, colours, labels and outsole details. Comparing a claimed older or special-edition pair with a current Samba OG and calling every difference counterfeit evidence will produce false alarms.
Before inspecting details, write down the exact model name, colourway and product code shown on the listing, box and shoe labels. Search for an official product page for that same combination where one is available. If the seller gives conflicting names or codes, record the conflict instead of choosing the version that makes the comparison easiest.
Example: the current US Samba OG reference
One Adidas US product listing identifies a Samba OG as “SAMBA OG SHOES,” product code IH9055. It describes a leather upper, Trefoil logo, serrated 3-Stripes and rubber outsole, with the colour listed as Crystal White / Core White / Silver Metallic. Those details are a reference for that specific listing and market, not a universal specification for every Samba.

Product information is market- and time-sensitive. A different region, production run or release may have another code or specification, so an apparent difference needs context.

3. Inspect a listing before you commit to purchase
Photos and description
Look for photographs of both shoes, the tongue and heel, side panels, outsole, insole if removable, box label and any attached tags. The images should be sharp enough to read labels and assess stitching. Stock photography cannot show whether the seller actually possesses the advertised pair.
Compare the written description with the official reference for the exact model. A listing that calls a leather Samba OG “vegan,” gives a code belonging to another colourway, or uses a model name that does not match the box deserves clarification before payment. Record the discrepancy and ask the seller to explain it in writing.
Seller information and documents
Check whether the seller can identify the original retailer and provide purchase documentation with personal information redacted where appropriate. The document should make sense alongside the model, date, size and market shown in the listing. Missing paperwork is not automatic proof of a counterfeit—genuine second-hand shoes often lack receipts—but it removes a useful line of evidence.
Returns and payment protection
Read the actual return and dispute terms before paying. Confirm who is responsible for return shipping, how long you have to report a problem and whether the platform requires photographs or an inspection. Use a payment method with a documented dispute process when possible, and preserve the transaction record rather than relying on an informal promise in chat.

Photograph the package as received, including shipping labels, before removing anything. Then use the same sequence for both shoes so that a left-right difference is not mistaken for a model difference.

- Confirm the model and colour. Compare the delivered pair with the listing and the official reference. Note differences in colour, materials, logos or visible panels.
- Read every label. Photograph the size and article information inside each shoe and on the box. Check whether the information is legible and internally consistent, but do not assume a matching code authenticates the shoe.
- Assess branding. Look at Trefoil marks, “Samba” lettering and the 3-Stripes for placement, proportions, edges and print quality. Compare both shoes with official images for the same release.
- Study construction. Examine the silhouette, panel shape, stitching, seams, glue or finishing, tongue, heel and outsole. Look for uneven work or materials that visibly conflict with the claimed specification.
- Compare both shoes. Check that pair-level details match: labels, colour, panel alignment and branding. A small asymmetry can occur on genuine footwear, so record its size and location instead of declaring a result from it.
- Inspect the packaging. Compare the box label with the shoe labels and listing. Check whether the box appears to belong to the claimed size and model, while remembering that boxes can be replaced or swapped.
Write down each observed discrepancy and photograph it beside a ruler or another scale reference when useful. A list of specific observations is more valuable than a conclusion such as “the quality feels wrong.”
5. Use branding and construction as clues, not a pass/fail test
Common inspection areas include logo placement and lettering, overall shape, stitching, material finish, outsole and heel details, and the information printed on shoe and box labels. These are sensible comparison points because they can reveal that a pair does not match its claimed release.
They remain clues. Informal videos and online discussions often present one feature—such as a font, insole print or code—as decisive. Adidas’s cited guidance does not publish a Samba-specific consumer visual checklist or a code-verification procedure. Production changes, regional packaging and factory defects can create differences that look suspicious in isolation.

Do not publish or pass on a definitive “fake” verdict based on one logo, one stitch or one scan.
6. Understand the limits of codes, QR marks and boxes
A product or article code should be checked for consistency, not treated as a certificate. A counterfeit can copy a real code, and a genuine shoe can have a label that is damaged, misprinted or associated with a replacement box. The same caution applies to QR codes: a code that resolves to a website does not establish that the item was manufactured by Adidas.
Likewise, clean printing, an apparently correct box, tissue paper or branded tags can be copied or transferred from another pair. Use these items to build a timeline and compare information, then rely on seller provenance and Adidas’s response for escalation.

7. Preserve evidence before contacting anyone
Keep the pair in the condition in which it arrived until the seller or platform has responded. Do not discard labels, tags, box, packaging or paperwork. Make a dated folder containing:
- full-pair photographs and close-ups of every suspected discrepancy;
- shoe and box labels, including product codes and sizes;
- the original listing URL and screenshots of its description and photos;
- seller name, profile, contact details and all messages;
- receipt, order confirmation, payment record and shipping information; and
- any return request, platform case number or seller response.
Adidas Spain’s suspected-counterfeit guidance specifically asks for product and label photos, packaging photos, proof of purchase, other documents and the website address when the purchase was online. Keeping the original files at their full resolution makes that submission easier.
8. Ask Adidas customer service when the evidence remains concerning
If the provenance is doubtful and the physical comparison raises concerns, contact Adidas customer service through the support channel for your market. Explain where the pair was bought, identify the seller and provide the evidence in an organised set rather than sending a single close-up.
Adidas Spain lists the following information for a suspected-counterfeit report:
- the place of purchase;
- the seller’s identity and address;
- photos of the product, including attached labels;
- photos of the packaging;
- a copy of the receipt or other proof of purchase;
- any additional documentation received; and
- the website address for an online purchase.
Adidas states that counterfeit products do not come from it, so it cannot accept them for an exchange or refund. Its Spanish guidance also says it may cooperate with authorities investigating authenticity, but it does not promise a particular investigation result or response time. Follow the instructions for your country because contact routes and procedures can differ.

9. Handle a marketplace dispute without weakening your case
Notify the seller promptly and describe the factual mismatch: for example, “the box code differs from both shoe labels” or “the delivered colour and model do not match the listing.” Avoid altering, cleaning or wearing the shoes while the dispute is open. Upload the original photographs and documents requested by the platform, and keep copies of everything submitted.

If a seller asks you to close a case in exchange for a refund, wait until the refund has actually cleared under the platform’s rules. Do not send the shoes to an unverified address without tracking and written instructions. The applicable deadline, return method and evidence requirements depend on the marketplace and payment provider, so read those terms rather than assuming every service follows the same process.
10. Compare multiple listings on the same axes
When choosing between listings, compare like with like instead of ranking pairs by one visual feature. A useful comparison records:

No consumer-facing authenticity score or universal pass/fail feature is established by the cited Adidas material. Use the comparison to choose the lower-risk transaction or to decide that more evidence is needed.
11. Avoid false alarms caused by variants and age
Older Sambas may have different packaging, fonts, materials or construction from a current release. Collaborations and regional editions can also depart from the standard product page. A Vegan model should not be judged against the leather specification of the IH9055 Samba OG, and a pair in another colourway should not be expected to match the Crystal White / Core White / Silver Metallic images.
Ask whether a difference is explained by the claimed model, release date or market before treating it as suspicious. If the seller cannot explain why the pair is being compared with a different version, stop the purchase or seek Adidas’s assessment.
12. A practical decision checklist
Use this short decision path after collecting your notes:
- Official channel? If yes, retain the receipt and use the retailer’s support process. If no, continue with heightened caution.
- Exact version identified? If the model, colourway or code is unclear, request clarification before payment or stop the transaction.
- Provenance documented? If the seller cannot explain the source, treat the missing history as risk rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
- Independent details consistent? Compare labels, packaging, branding and construction with the exact official reference. Several conflicts justify escalation.
- Evidence preserved? Save the listing, messages, payment record, photographs and paperwork before contacting the seller or Adidas.
- Still uncertain? Do not wear or resell the pair as authentic. Ask Adidas customer service for the evidence it requests and follow the marketplace’s dispute procedure.
What a careful conclusion looks like
A responsible assessment states what was observed and how certain it is: “The listing identifies IH9055, but the box and shoe labels disagree, and the seller has no purchase record; I am pausing the transaction and requesting documentation.” That is more accurate and more useful than claiming that one crooked stitch proves a fake.

Adidas’s official recommendation for future purchases remains its online shop, official stores or authorised resellers.
