Check a suspicious image, recording, or video in three layers: inspect artifacts that fit its medium, verify the source and context, and seek provenance or qualified technical review when the stakes are high. A warped hand, odd pause, or detector warning is a clue—not proof. Modern generators can remove familiar mistakes, while compression, poor lighting, and ordinary recording problems can create misleading artifacts.
What counts as a deepfake?
A deepfake is media that has been synthetically generated or materially altered with machine-learning systems. The manipulation can affect a still image, a person’s voice, a face in a video, or several of these at once. The practical question is not simply “Does this look strange?” but “What evidence supports the claim that this file came from this person, place, and time?”

The FBI notes that synthetic-content creation is available to a broader customer base and that improving quality makes authenticity judgments harder. See its discussion of emerging technology and synthetic media at the FBI’s March 29, 2022 cyber-division oversight statement. Treat any initial visual or auditory impression as a reason to investigate, not as a verdict.

- Pause. Do not forward the file, send money, disclose a password, or follow an urgent instruction while you are still evaluating it.
- Preserve the original. Save the file or message, its URL, the account name, and the time you received it. Re-encoded copies can erase useful details.
- Find the earliest source. Look for a full-length upload, an original photograph, an official transcript, or a statement from the person or organization depicted.
- Check the claim’s context. Confirm the date, location, event, and whether independent, credible outlets report the same event.
- Inspect the medium-specific clues. Use the image, audio, or video checks below; record inconsistencies without turning one into proof.
- Escalate proportionally. Use provenance information, a qualified reviewer, or a system evaluated for the relevant conditions when the decision could cause financial, legal, safety, or reputational harm.
This sequence follows the complementary approach described by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) overview of technical approaches to digital-content transparency: provenance and authenticity, labeling and watermarking, detection, testing, and auditing each answer a different part of the question.

How to spot possible manipulation in an image
Inspect the entire frame, not only the face
Zoom out first, then examine the borders and background. The FBI lists visual warping, unnatural lighting, and unusual color patterns as possible signs of synthetic or manipulated material. Look for architecture that bends unexpectedly, text that changes shape between letters, repeated textures, jewelry that merges into skin, or objects whose edges do not meet cleanly. A face can be convincing while a reflection, sign, or background person gives away an edit.
Lighting should make physical sense. Compare the direction and softness of shadows on the face, hair, clothing, and nearby objects. Highlights in eyes, glasses, or polished surfaces should be compatible with the apparent light source. These checks identify things worth verifying; a real camera can also produce glare, noise, and color shifts.
Check details associated with people and objects
- Look at fingers, teeth, ears, hair strands, and eyeglass frames at high resolution, but do not use a “six fingers” checklist as a pass/fail test.
- Read signs, labels, and logos in the original or highest-quality version. Generators may produce plausible-looking marks whose letters or spacing are inconsistent.
- Compare repeated elements. A crowd, patterned fabric, or row of windows may contain copies or abrupt changes in shape.
- Check reflections and shadows for the same person or object. Their direction, number, and position should agree with the scene.
An Associated Press technology explainer quotes deepfake expert Henry Ajder warning that familiar advice such as checking blinking patterns can become unreliable as synthesis improves. Its May 7, 2024 guidance is at AP’s “One Tech Tip: How to spot AI-generated deepfake images”. The absence of an obvious artifact does not authenticate an image.

Try to locate an earlier, larger, or less-compressed version. Compare crops, captions, and timestamps rather than assuming the first account that posted it created it. Ask whether the location, weather, clothing, landmarks, and event schedule fit the stated date. A reverse-image search or an archive can help find older uses of the same frame, but a search result is evidence about reuse and context, not a definitive authenticity test.

- Breaths that appear at unnatural intervals or disappear during long sentences.
- Consonants and vowel transitions that sound smeared, metallic, or abruptly edited.
- Emotion, emphasis, or pitch that does not match the words or the speaker’s usual manner.
- Room tone, traffic, music, or reverberation that changes suddenly while the voice remains unnaturally clean.
- Clicks, repeated syllables, or a change in microphone distance between adjacent phrases.
Noise reduction, phone codecs, Bluetooth microphones, and ordinary splices can create many of the same effects. Compare the clip with authenticated recordings of the claimed speaker only to identify differences that deserve checking; a voice match is not identity authentication.
Verify requests independently
If a familiar-sounding caller asks for money, credentials, gift cards, confidential data, or an urgent transfer, end the conversation and contact the person through a telephone number, messaging account, or organizational directory you already trust. Do not use a number or link supplied in the suspicious message. Confirm both the person and the request, ideally with a second participant or an established approval process.

Understand the limits of human listening
People are not reliable universal detectors of cloned speech. A 2023 preprint titled Warning: Humans Cannot Reliably Detect Speech Deepfakes describes an experiment involving 529 participants who classified genuine and deepfake speech; that sample is not an accuracy rate for every listener, language, speaker, or voice-cloning system. Read the study at arXiv:2301.07829. If the consequence of believing the clip is serious, use independent identity verification rather than confidence in your ears.
How to check a suspicious video
Watch motion, facial alignment, and light
The FBI lists unnatural movement, mismatches between speech and facial movement, inconsistent facial features, and lighting or color that does not make sense as possible video clues. Play the clip at normal speed first, then frame by frame if your player allows it. Check whether:
- The mouth shapes match the spoken consonants and the timing of the audio.
- The jaw, cheeks, ears, hairline, and glasses remain stable as the head turns.
- Hands, teeth, earrings, and clothing change shape between frames without a physical reason.
- Skin tone, sharpness, or texture shifts around the face while the background remains steady.
- Motion blur, shadows, and reflections point in compatible directions.
Compression, low resolution, dropped frames, and poor lighting can cause lip-sync errors or blocky edges in genuine footage. A mismatch should trigger source and context checks, not an instant declaration that the video is fake.

Separate the audio and video questions
Ask whether the soundtrack belongs to this recording at all. Room echo, microphone noise, crowd sound, and camera movement should change in ways that fit what is visible. A clean voice over a windy outdoor scene, or a crowd that never reacts to a supposedly loud statement, is a lead to investigate. Compare the clip with the original upload or a complete recording because a short social-media excerpt may have been trimmed, dubbed, or re-encoded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not use blinking as a pass/fail test
Blink frequency varies naturally, and current synthesis can imitate ordinary blinking. AP’s explainer, quoting Henry Ajder, cautions that blinking-based advice can become outdated. Treat blinking as one observation at most, never as proof of authenticity or manipulation.
What each verification method can and cannot tell you
| Method | Evidence it can provide | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Visual, audio, or motion inspection | Specific inconsistencies in lighting, movement, speech, synchronization, or background sound that warrant investigation | Human judgment is fallible; genuine compression and recording defects can look artificial, and high-quality synthesis may leave few visible clues |
| Source and context checks | Whether the earliest available file, date, location, event, and independent reports support the stated story | A traceable source can still publish an altered file; an unverified account can repost genuine material |
| Provenance, labels, and watermarks | Information about a file’s origin, handling history, or declared synthetic creation when the system preserves it | Records may be absent, stripped, incomplete, or unavailable across platforms; absence of provenance does not prove a fake |
| Automated detection | A model’s estimate that the media resembles examples of manipulation covered by its evaluation | Performance can change with lighting, facial expression, media quality, and the generation method represented in training |
| Qualified forensic review | A documented assessment using tools and procedures selected for a defined case and tested against relevant material | It is specialized work, not a consumer guarantee; the reviewer still needs the original file and a clear question |
The U.S. Government Accountability Office explains that detector accuracy can fall when lighting, facial expressions, media quality, or the generation method differs from the conditions represented in training. Read its March 11, 2024 Science & Tech Spotlight: Combating Deepfakes. A “likely fake” or “likely real” label should therefore be combined with source, context, and human review.
How provenance and authenticity information fits in
Provenance records can describe where a file originated and what edits occurred; labels and watermarks can disclose declared synthetic content; detection systems look for patterns associated with manipulation; testing and auditing measure how these approaches behave. NIST presents these as complementary technical approaches rather than a single universal solution in its 2024 digital-content transparency overview.
When a platform displays provenance, inspect what it actually covers: the creator’s identity, the capture device, later edits, or only a declaration from an uploader. A valid record can support an authenticity assessment, but it does not automatically prove that the person named in the record had authority to make the claim. Conversely, a screenshot, download, or platform conversion may remove metadata without changing the underlying scene. Missing provenance is a gap in evidence, not evidence of fabrication.

A repeatable six-step verification workflow
1. Stop the immediate action
Urgency is a manipulation tactic whether the media is synthetic or genuine. Keep the message, do not click embedded links, and tell colleagues or family members that verification is in progress.
2. Preserve and identify the item
Record the filename, account, URL, upload time, message text, and any surrounding conversation. Download the highest-quality original available without altering it. If you must share a working copy, label it as a copy and retain the original separately.
3. Locate the earliest credible source
Search for a complete recording, the original photographer or broadcaster, an official transcript, or a statement from the person or organization depicted. Compare the earliest version with later crops and captions; edits may have been introduced during reposting.
4. Test the claim’s context
Check the stated date, location, event schedule, weather, landmarks, language, and time zone. Seek independent reporting or direct confirmation from a known official channel. Do not treat multiple accounts that copied the same post as independent corroboration.
5. Inspect the medium-specific clues
For images, examine lighting, shadows, text, reflections, and background geometry. For audio, examine pauses, inflection, room tone, and the request being made. For video, compare lip movement, facial continuity, motion, sound, and lighting. Write down the exact frame or timestamp that concerns you.
Best Value
6. Escalate according to the stakes
Use available provenance or authenticity information, then seek qualified review for legal, safety, financial, employment, election, or identity decisions. NIST’s forensic work on evaluating analytic systems against AI-generated deepfakes describes specialized evaluation rather than a consumer pass/fail service; see NIST’s January 27, 2025 publication and its OpenMFC evaluation resources.
Extra safeguards for identity and high-stakes decisions
For remote identity proofing, NIST Special Publication 800-63A advises controls and review within the service provider’s identity-proofing process. It specifically discusses indicators such as high latency, synchronization problems, and inconsistent skin tone or resolution in remote attended collection. The standard also states: “CSPs SHOULD analyze digital media for signatures of generative AI algorithms and deepfake tools that are known to be used to create forged digital media.” Read the requirement in its proper scope at NIST SP 800-63A.
That guidance is for organizations operating identity-proofing systems, not a universal household checklist. For an individual, the practical equivalent is to verify the person and the requested action through a separate trusted channel, require normal approval controls, and avoid making a consequential decision from a single clip.
Common mistakes that produce false confidence
- Relying on one tell. Blinking, fingers, a robotic voice, or a detector score can be absent in a fake or present in genuine media.
- Confusing poor quality with synthesis. Social platforms recompress files, and real cameras struggle with darkness, motion, and backlighting.
- Assuming a watermark settles the question. A label may be incomplete, removed, or applied only to one stage of an editing chain.
- Trusting a familiar voice or face as authentication. Cloning targets exactly those familiar signals; use a separate channel for the request.
- Calling a clip fake because no provenance appears. Metadata can be stripped during ordinary export or reposting.
- Using a detector outside its tested conditions. Ask what media types, quality levels, manipulation methods, and error rates were evaluated before relying on the output.
- Sharing while investigating. Reposting a disputed clip increases reach and can destroy the context needed to assess it.
When you should not make a public authenticity claim
If you can identify only a visual oddity but cannot establish the source, say exactly that: “This frame contains an unexplained lighting inconsistency; the original has not been verified.” Distinguish observations, verified facts, and unresolved possibilities. Reserve a statement that media is fabricated for cases supported by reliable provenance, a documented technical examination, or clear independent evidence. This wording protects people from both false accusations and successful impersonation.
Bottom line for checking deepfakes
Match the check to the medium, then move outward to source, context, provenance, and independent confirmation. Images invite scrutiny of geometry and light; audio requires attention to speech and room sound; video adds motion and lip synchronization. None of these clues is a universal test, and automated detectors can fail when real-world conditions differ from their training. In a high-stakes exchange, verify the person and the request through a channel you already trust before acting.
