Before buying a collectible, verify evidence tied to the exact item—not just the seller’s story. Check certification records and item photos, inspect card slabs for tampering, compare signatures and construction details with credible examples, and research the seller’s terms and prices. A certificate, hologram, or signing photo is only useful when it corresponds to the item being offered.
Start with the item-specific record
Ask for clear photographs of the item, labels, certification numbers, and any paperwork before purchase. Use the issuer’s official lookup rather than relying on a seller-provided screenshot or link. Compare the record’s description and photograph, when available, with the exact object in the listing. A number that resolves to a legitimate record does not by itself prove that the object or paperwork accompanying it is genuine.

Authentication routes cover different things. MLB says its program covers eligible items witnessed being signed or used by designated authenticators. PSA describes examining autographs after the fact through signature and object analysis and comparison. Compare the item type covered, what evidence is recorded, whether the specific item appears in the official lookup, and whether its identifying details match. The FBI also advises considering an authenticator’s qualifications. The sources do not establish one service as best for every item.

For PSA-graded cards, verify the certification through PSA’s buyer security guidance and compare the card and holder with the official record. PSA describes its holder as tamper-evident, not tamper-proof. Possible signs of compromise include:
#1 Best Overall
- Chase the game’s brightest stars and its all-time greats. 7 cards per pack. 6 packs per box. A strong release for collectors seeking both today’s stars and all-time greats. Topps Signature Class is built to celebrate the art of the signature and the identity behind it.
- 2025 Topps Signature Class Football features a 250-card base set highlighting top veterans and rising stars, including 150 rookies in Paper and Chrome parallels with a full range of colors.
- The product offers multiple ways to collect. It introduces Short Prints like Fluidity and Roses, plus Super Short Prints such as Draft Dreams, First Class, and Odyssey.
- Autographs are led by Chrome and Crystal Clear editions, alongside subsets like Supreme Signers, Preeminent Ink, and HOF Signs, with rare Dual and Triple Autographs also in the chase.
- The checklist is packed with talent, featuring rookies like Jaxson Dart and Tetairoa McMillan, stars like Josh Allen and Jaxson Smith-Njigba, and legends including Tom Brady and Roger Staubach.
- Cloudy frosting near the holder’s edges.
- Cracks or fractures, or unusual flexibility that may indicate the sonic weld has been broken.
- Edges that appear able to pop open.
- A label that seems layered: PSA warns that a counterfeit front may be placed over a genuine label. An extra layer may make reverse-side text harder to see through the label or reveal part of the authentic label beneath.
These are warning signs, not a complete test; PSA notes that a particular forgery may not show every example. Review PSA’s FAQ as well as its security guidance, and do not treat a clean-looking holder as conclusive proof.
Evaluate autographs and letters of authenticity
For PSA/DNA documentation, compare the certification number on the label and paperwork, then check PSA’s online record for an image of the exact item where one is available. PSA describes security features including a tamper-evident label, a color-changing embedded hologram on its documentation, watermarks on letters of authenticity (LOAs), and an item image. Its stated examination process includes ink analysis, autograph-structure analysis, object evaluation, side-by-side comparison, and possible video spectral comparison. These are PSA’s descriptions of its own service; they do not establish that every certificate from every issuer is genuine. See PSA’s authentication method.

Compare a signature with known examples and consider the authenticator’s qualifications, as the FBI advises. Be cautious about a photograph said to show an athlete signing: the U.S. Postal Inspection Service warns that such an image may be stolen or stock photography. It is not item-specific proof on its own.
Inspect jerseys, limited editions, and game-used items
Compare physical details
For jerseys, compare stitching patterns, nameplates, and patches with photographs of known genuine examples. If a listing calls an item a limited edition, look for the actual edition size rather than treating the phrase as proof of scarcity. The FBI’s buyer guidance recommends checking such details.

Verify MLB program holograms correctly
For an item represented as signed or game-used under MLB’s authentication program, check the program hologram and cross-reference its serial number in MLB’s authentication database. MLB says its program covers items witnessed being signed or used by designated authenticators. Do not confuse these authentication holograms with MLB licensed-product holograms: licensed-product holograms are distinct and do not appear in the game-used and autograph verification system.

- Research who is selling the item; do not rely only on a listing profile or sales pitch.
- Read the refund policy before paying, including any limits that apply if authenticity is disputed.
- Compare prices for similar signed items and treat an extreme discount on a valuable autograph as a warning.
- Be especially cautious when the seller uses a signing photograph, certificate, or hologram as the sole proof instead of providing details you can verify independently.
The FBI’s 2016 advisory, issued in the context of the Cubs’ championship season, quotes Special Agent Brian Brusokas of its Art Crimes team: “Always be mindful that if an item seems too good to be true, it probably is.” The Postal Inspection Service page, last updated May 2, 2019, also advises researching the seller and not treating signing photos as proof. These are practical cautions, not estimates of how much memorabilia is counterfeit.

When to seek another opinion
If a high-value purchase still depends on details you cannot verify, consider an authentication service that covers that item type. Check the provider’s current scope and process, and confirm that the record or documentation will identify the specific object. An authentication service can add evidence, but the available official guidance does not establish a universal ranking or guarantee that any particular item is genuine.
