The safest way to evaluate an eBay item is to treat authenticity as an evidence-and-process question, not a single visual test. Compare the title, description, photographs, condition and accessories; ask for item-specific documentation when it matters; and look for eBay’s blue Authenticity Guarantee badge in eligible categories. If the delivered item is counterfeit or materially different, use the order’s return and Money Back Guarantee process promptly.
Photos, serial numbers, certificates and packaging can support a genuine-item claim, but none proves every product authentic by itself. eBay prohibits counterfeit or misleading items, yet authentication coverage is limited to eligible categories and transactions. The practical goal is to reduce risk before paying and preserve a clear remedy if the listing proves false.

What eBay considers counterfeit or misrepresented
eBay’s Counterfeit policy states: “Counterfeit or fake items aren’t allowed on eBay.” The rule is broader than a copied logo. It covers listings that mislead buyers about whether a product is genuine, authorized, accurately graded, correctly composed, safe or compliant with a claimed standard.

Words such as “dupe” or “inspired by” require context. Their presence alone does not prove an item is counterfeit. The issue is whether the wording, protected marks or overall presentation could make a buyer think the product is associated with, authorized by or made by the named brand.

Why one photo, number or certificate cannot settle authenticity
A listing is a collection of claims and evidence. A counterfeit can copy packaging, engrave a plausible serial number or include a convincing-looking card. A genuine item can also have replacement packaging, wear or an unusual production variation. For that reason, use each clue to identify questions, not as an automatic pass or fail.

When several independent details agree, confidence improves. When the title, images, accessories, condition and paperwork conflict, stop and resolve the conflict before purchasing.
A repeatable pre-purchase inspection
1. Read every field for internal consistency
Compare the title with the description, item-specific fields, condition selection, photographs and list of included accessories. Look for a model name in the title that does not appear on the item, a “new” condition paired with visible wear, a stated metal purity that conflicts with the description, or accessories shown in photographs but omitted from the sale. Material omissions matter as much as direct false statements.

Write down the exact version, size, color, date, grading notation or material claimed. That gives you a checklist against the photographs and against the item if it arrives.
2. Confirm that the photos show the actual item
Prefer original, clear images from multiple angles. For categories where markings are important, the logos, labels and relevant parts should be visible rather than hidden or blurred. Stock images can show what a product normally looks like, but they do not demonstrate that the seller possesses the pictured example.
Ask for close views of details that determine identity: maker marks, serial or reference numbers, hallmarks, edges, stitching, date wheels, card surfaces, seals or other category-specific features. A refusal, an unexplained inability to provide a close-up or a sudden change of photographs is a reason to pause, not proof of fraud.

3. Request item-specific documentation when appropriate
For a high-value or collectible item, ask for evidence tied to that exact piece. Depending on the category, relevant records can include provenance, a serial number, an invoice, a grading report, an accepted certificate of authenticity, a letter of authenticity or an assay card. Ask what item the document identifies and whether the number or description matches the listing.
Documentation has different weight in different categories. A grading report may describe a particular card; an assay card may state a metal or stone assessment; an invoice may show a prior sale. None is a universal guarantee, and a document that cannot be connected to the photographed item should not be treated as item-specific proof.
4. Test the seller’s explanation, not just the headline
Use the listing’s questions and answers or other eBay communication tools to ask about contradictions: Why is the photographed accessory absent from the description? Why does the serial-number format differ from the claimed model? Where did the item come from, and what record identifies this exact example? Keep the response with the listing details.
A confident assertion such as “100% authentic” is only a claim. Stronger evidence is specific, consistent and connected to the item. Gaps in provenance, evasive answers and mismatched details should lower the amount you are willing to risk.
5. Interpret “dupe” and “inspired by” language carefully
Read the entire title, description and images together. A plainly described unbranded alternative is different from a listing that uses a protected logo, trade dress or brand association to make an unauthorized copy appear official. Do not rely on the word “dupe” as a shortcut in either direction: it is not automatic proof of counterfeiting, and it does not excuse a presentation that misleads buyers.

Before paying, look for the blue Authenticity Guarantee badge and read the eligibility details shown on the listing. The program is not attached to every item in a category; eligibility can depend on the item, seller, buyer location, destination, marketplace and shipping arrangement.

How to compare two otherwise similar listings
Use the same questions for each listing rather than choosing the one with the most polished photographs. This comparison keeps a low price from overshadowing weak evidence.

What eBay Authenticity Guarantee actually does
On eBay.com, the buyer help page lists shoes, handbags and accessories, watches, apparel, jewelry, trading cards and coins as categories in which Authenticity Guarantee is currently available for eligible items. Availability is category-specific and can vary by location and transaction details. The blue badge on the listing is the practical signal to investigate; a category name by itself is not a promise of coverage.
The inspection path for an eligible purchase
- Purchase through the eligible eBay listing. Confirm that the badge and the displayed destination and shipping conditions apply to your transaction.
- The seller ships to an authentication facility. The item is not sent directly to you first.
- Authenticators check the contents against the listing. They verify that the package contains the item described and perform a multi-step physical inspection.
- The transaction is cleared or stopped. If authenticity cannot be verified, or the condition conflicts with the listing, eBay says the item will not be sent to the buyer and the buyer will receive a refund.
- Minor discrepancies may require a decision. eBay may contact you with details and ask whether you want to proceed when a smaller difference is found.
Important limits
- Some destinations or marketplaces are excluded, so a badge on a similar listing does not establish eligibility for yours.
- A miscategorized or modified item may receive only a condition check rather than full authentication.
- The program is a safeguard for eligible purchases, not a universal statement that every item on eBay has been authenticated.
- Authentication checks the item presented in that transaction; it does not turn an ineligible listing into a covered one.
If a high-value item lacks the badge, decide whether the listing’s documentation and your available remedy justify the risk. Do not try to substitute a generic loupe, UV light or other “counterfeit detector” for category-specific expertise; a tool may reveal one feature while missing a copied or altered item.
What to do when the delivered item is wrong
Act from the order record, not from an informal promise or a seller-only report. eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers most transactions in which an item does not match its listing, subject to completing and paying on eBay and meeting the policy’s requirements and deadlines.
1. Preserve evidence immediately
Save the listing, photographs, description, messages and order details. Photograph the package, labels, seals, item, markings, accessories and any damage before changing, cleaning, repairing or wearing the item. Describe the mismatch factually: for example, a different reference number, an absent component, a condition that contradicts the listing, or signs that support a counterfeit concern.
2. Open the order’s return or resolution request
Use the reason that accurately describes the problem, such as an item that is not as described or has strong counterfeit indicators. Include the clearest evidence and keep all communication in the eBay case. Do not close the request merely because the seller offers a promise outside the order process.

3. Follow the return instruction you receive
When an item is counterfeit, damaged, faulty or materially different, eBay’s policy governs the next step. The policy specifically says that where there are strong indicators an item is counterfeit, the buyer must request a return and may not be required to ship it back. Wait for the case instructions rather than mailing a suspicious item to an address supplied informally.

If the seller has not resolved the request by the applicable deadline, the order’s resolution flow describes asking eBay to step in. Deadlines and exceptions vary by transaction and item category, so use the date displayed in your live order and the current Money Back Guarantee policy instead of relying on a universal number of days.
Do not assume that an authentication badge eliminates the need to report a problem. If the item you receive is materially different from the listing, document it and use the order process even when an earlier inspection occurred.

For an unpurchased listing, use the listing’s report-content flow and select the reason that best describes the prohibited or misleading content. Reporting a listing is different from opening a return or Money Back Guarantee case for an order; choose the path that matches your situation.
Rights owners who believe their intellectual property is being infringed have a separate VeRO route. A buyer should use the ordinary listing-report process rather than presenting themselves as a rights owner.
Applying the checks to common categories
Watches and jewelry
Compare reference numbers, hallmarks, movement or setting details, stated materials, condition and accessories. A box or an assay card can support the story but does not prove that the contents belong to it. Watches and jewelry appear on eBay’s listed Authenticity Guarantee categories, so check the badge and the transaction’s specific eligibility before relying on the program.
Trading cards and stamps
Look for clear images of fronts, backs, edges, printing and any grading label. An unauthorized reprint can be made to resemble an original issue, and a grading report is useful only when it identifies the exact card. Trading cards are listed among the categories where eligible items may receive Authenticity Guarantee inspection.
Apparel, handbags and accessories
Check logos, stitching, hardware, labels, serial or date markings, condition and every included accessory against the description. “Inspired by” wording does not itself settle the question; assess whether the overall presentation implies brand authorization. These categories are listed for possible Authenticity Guarantee coverage, subject to the badge and transaction rules.
Media, artwork and other branded goods
Ask whether the seller is offering an authorized original or an unauthorized copy. Compare edition, origin, composition and included materials, and treat claims about safety or regulatory compliance as factual assertions that require appropriate evidence. The counterfeit policy applies even when the item does not imitate a logo in an obvious way.

A practical stop-and-buy decision
Pause the purchase when several weaknesses appear together: stock-only images, omitted markings, contradictory condition details, unexplained provenance gaps, generic paperwork and no applicable authentication coverage. One weakness may have an innocent explanation; a cluster means you cannot evaluate the item on the listing’s evidence.
Proceed only when the item identity, condition, included parts and documentation are coherent, the seller has answered material questions, and you understand the remedy available through the order. For eligible categories, confirm the badge and conditions. For ineligible items, place greater weight on item-specific evidence and your ability to use eBay checkout and resolution procedures.
