Start with the exact set number, define what “complete” includes, and require evidence that matches whether the box is sealed, opened, or already built. A finished-model photograph, an intact-looking seal, a seller’s rating, or a matching weight can each be useful clues, but none proves authenticity and completeness by itself.
What you are really checking
“Fake,” “resealed,” and “incomplete” describe different problems. A counterfeit set may contain imitation bricks, packaging, figures, or instructions. An authentic LEGO set may have been opened and then sold with pieces missing, swapped, damaged, or replaced. A genuine set can also be repackaged to look factory sealed. Treat these as separate questions instead of assuming that one answer settles the others.

- Authenticity: Do the box, instructions, stickers, figures, and elements appear to be genuine LEGO products for the stated set?
- Completeness: Are all parts, figures, stickers, and other items included for the scope you agreed with the seller?
- Condition: Are pieces, prints, stickers, and packaging in the condition represented?
- Provenance of the claim: Is the seller showing the actual item, or only a stock image and a broad word such as “complete”?
These questions matter for both sealed and used listings. BrickLink’s Item Condition Guidelines explicitly state: “The seller cannot guarantee that a sealed set is complete.” A factory-looking closure is therefore evidence about packaging, not a guarantee that every bag and element is present.

Get the set number and package version
Ask for the complete set number printed on the box or instructions and a direct photograph of the actual item. If the set had regional packaging, a later edition, a special release, or more than one box version, record that too. Inventory, box graphics, barcodes, and expected weight can vary by version, so comparing the listing with a different package can create false alarms or hide real inconsistencies.

Do not accept only a model name, theme, or photograph of the finished build. Several sets can share a character or vehicle, and a seller may accidentally list the wrong number. The set number is the key that lets you check the correct parts inventory, instruction sequence, sticker sheet, figures, and packaging.
Define “complete” in writing
Before paying, ask the seller to specify what is included. “Complete” is not a universal package. For a used set, BrickLink’s definition treats a set as complete when it has all parts needed to build all models shown in the instructions and the original stickers. The box, packaging, and extra parts are not required under that definition, and missing instructions must be disclosed.
For your purchase, make the scope explicit:
- All numbered and unnumbered elements needed for every model in the original instructions.
- All minifigures, animals, accessories, printed pieces, and decorated elements.
- The original sticker sheet, whether unused or applied, and its condition.
- Extra parts left over after the build.
- Original instructions, digital instructions, alternate-build components, or supplementary booklets.
- The original box, inner cartons, bags, seals, and inserts.
If a seller means only “the main model can be built,” that may be a reasonable sale, but it is not the same claim as an inventoried, original, complete set.

Use a set-specific parts list
For an opened set, compare the actual contents by element, color, and quantity against an inventory for the exact set number and version. A total piece count is not enough: two elements can have similar shapes but different colors, molds, prints, or quantities. Mark each line as verified, missing, substituted, damaged, or unknown.
LEGO says every LEGO piece has a unique number and that piece numbers are listed at the back of the building instructions. It also notes that numbers sometimes change. If you need to identify a replacement, use the number shown for your edition and check whether a newer number is now used for the same piece. BrickLink may display an updated piece number for an older element.

Ask for photographs that expose hidden contents
Request original, well-lit photographs of loose contents rather than relying on a completed model. The most useful images show:
- Distinctive minifigures, printed torsos and heads, unusual animals, and tiny accessories.
- Rare colors, transparent elements, wheels, hinges, and other parts that are easy to swap.
- Sticker sheets and decorated panels, including unused stickers and applied stickers.
- All sorted piles or bags, with enough detail to count small elements.
- Any areas hidden behind a built model or inside vehicles and structures.
- Instructions, box labels, and the set number in the same listing.
A build photograph demonstrates only that a model existed in that configuration when the picture was taken. It does not prove that every original element, figure, sticker, spare, or alternate-build part is still included. Ask the seller to list exceptions in writing: missing pieces, replacements, damaged parts, absent stickers, missing instructions, or a box that is not included.
Classify uncertainty instead of guessing
If a seller cannot provide an inventory, clear photographs, or a written exception list, describe the set as completeness unverified. Do not convert an unknown into “probably complete” because the model looks right. For a valuable set, price the possibility of missing or replaced items before deciding whether the listing is worthwhile.
Step 3: Examine a sealed-set claim
Request photos of the actual box
Ask for the seller’s own photographs of every box face, both ends, the underside, corners, and every closure. Stock images cannot show whether the offered box has been opened. The set number, legal text, graphics, barcode area, printing quality, and wear should all belong to the same package version.
Inspect seals and cardboard for disturbance
Look closely at the adhesive and the card around it. Warning signs include:

- Torn or lifted cardboard fibers around a seal.
- Adhesive residue, a second layer of tape, or a seal that is not aligned with the original flap.
- Uneven re-gluing, softened or glossy card, or a flap that does not sit as it would when new.
- Different wear patterns on opposite sides, suggesting that one face was replaced or handled separately.
- Plastic wrap that is loose, heat-marked, mismatched, or inconsistent with other examples of the same release.
Packaging methods change by factory, era, region, and set. An unfamiliar closure is a question to resolve, not automatic proof of a counterfeit. Compare it with credible examples of the same set number and box version, and ask the seller to explain any difference.

Use weight only as a screening clue
A small digital kitchen or postal scale can help screen an expensive sealed purchase, but it is not an authentication device. Compare the package with a reference for the same set number and box version, and record the scale’s precision and whether the reference includes all packaging. Differences can come from cardboard, tape, moisture, regional inserts, or measurement error. A discrepancy deserves questions; a matching weight cannot rule out swapped contents, missing pieces balanced by other objects, or counterweights. There is no universal weight threshold that proves a box is genuine or complete.
Step 4: Assess authenticity from several independent clues
Check printing and legal details
Compare box printing with reliable official product imagery for the same release. Examine sharpness, color registration, typography, set number placement, logos, age markings, legal text, barcode layout, and the quality of the cardboard. Blurry type, incorrect spacing, colors that do not match the era, or legal information inconsistent with the stated package are reasons to pause.
One packaging difference does not establish a fake, because regional and production changes exist. Ask for a clearer photograph or an explanation tied to the exact edition rather than making a decision from a single visual anomaly.
Inspect elements and markings where visible
Look at the actual bricks, plates, slopes, figures, and printed parts—not just the box. Genuine elements commonly carry LEGO markings, but a stamp on one visible stud does not verify every piece in a mixed lot. Counterfeit manufacturers can imitate markings, and a legitimate set can contain unrelated replacement parts. Compare distinctive molds, clutch feel, plastic finish, color, printing, and figure details across multiple representative elements.

Do not treat a barcode scan, one close-up of a stud, or a photograph of a logo as conclusive. If the seller hides the parts that would reveal a substitution, ask for those views before buying.
Do not use price or seller reputation as proof
An unusually low price can reflect missing parts, damage, urgency, or a counterfeit, while a high price can simply reflect scarcity. Seller feedback is useful for judging communication and fulfillment history, but it does not authenticate an individual box. A professional-looking listing can still omit a missing-items list; a casual listing can still be genuine. Base the decision on item-specific evidence.
Sealed versus opened: which listing gives you better evidence?
| Question | Sealed listing | Opened or built listing |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence of tampering | Inspect every seal, flap, wrap, and box face. A clean closure supports the claim but cannot guarantee the contents. | There is no factory-seal claim; focus on photographs, inventory records, and disclosure of substitutions. |
| Evidence of inventory completeness | Limited before opening. Weight and intact packaging are only screening clues. | Potentially strong when the seller inventories by element, color, and quantity and shows loose contents. |
| Condition of parts and figures | Unknown until opened, except for visible box damage. | Can be inspected directly for wear, cracks, discoloration, missing prints, and sticker condition. |
| Box, instructions, and extras | Usually visible from the package, but inner bags and spare parts remain unverified. | Ask specifically whether box, instructions, stickers, alternate-build pieces, and extras are included. |
| Seller evidence | Require original photographs of all sides and closures. | Require an inventory or written missing-items list plus close photographs of distinctive contents. |
| Cost risk | You may pay a premium for a sealed claim and discover a problem only after opening. | You can often price known omissions and replacement parts before purchase. |
Neither condition is automatically safer. A carefully inventoried opened set can provide more evidence about completeness than a sealed box, while a genuinely factory-sealed box may be preferable when packaging and unopened contents are the priority.

Red flags that should change your decision
- The set number is absent, blurred, or inconsistent across the box, instructions, and listing.
- The seller uses only stock photos or a completed-model image.
- “Complete” appears without a definition, inventory, or exception list.
- Seals, wrap, or flaps show residue, tears, re-gluing, or mismatched wear.
- Important figures, printed parts, stickers, or accessories are hidden or omitted from photographs.
- The seller refuses original photos, a written list of missing items, or questions about opening and resealing.
- The package weight is presented as a universal authenticity test rather than a same-version comparison.
- A single LEGO stamp, barcode result, price, or feedback score is offered as the entire proof.
One red flag may justify asking for clarification. Several unresolved red flags justify walking away, lowering your offer to reflect the uncertainty, or choosing an inventoried alternative.
Decide using evidence and total cost
Compare the listing’s price with the cost of making it usable, not merely the asking price. For an incomplete set, identify each missing element, figure, sticker, or instruction and check whether it is realistically obtainable. Include shipping, condition differences, and the possibility that a rare printed or decorated part costs far more than an ordinary brick.
A clearly disclosed incomplete set can still be a sensible purchase if you have priced the omissions and accept the result. Do not pay a sealed-set or complete-set premium for a claim the seller will not substantiate. When two listings are close in price, prefer the one with better item-specific photographs, a precise scope of completeness, and fewer unknowns—even if it is opened.

What to do if a new set is missing a piece
Missing parts in a newly opened set are different from gaps in a used set. LEGO’s replacement-parts help topics cover missing bags in new sets, missing or damaged pieces, stickers, minifigures, and identifying set and piece numbers. LEGO says that when a minifigure or piece is missing or broken when a new set is opened, a buyer may request it as a replacement.
Have the set number, instruction page, and piece number ready. The piece number is listed at the back of the building instructions; remember that numbers can change, so confirm the current identifier if a search produces no result. Replacement support for a new purchase does not turn an incompletely described used set into a complete one, and it does not establish that a mixed lot is authentic.
A practical buying checklist
- Record the exact set number and relevant box version.
- Save original photographs of the actual box or contents.
- Write down what “complete” includes for this transaction.
- For opened sets, compare element, color, and quantity with the correct inventory.
- Verify figures, printed parts, accessories, stickers, instructions, extras, and alternate-build pieces separately.
- For sealed sets, inspect every closure and ask about any inconsistent wear or wrap.
- Use weight only with a same-version reference and treat it as a screening clue.
- Check several physical elements and distinctive prints; never rely on one mark or scan.
- Obtain a written missing-items or substitutions list when anything is uncertain.
- Price realistic replacement parts and shipping before agreeing to a premium.
- Walk away or renegotiate when material unknowns remain after reasonable questions.
Bottom line
Buy the evidence, not the label. The exact set number and a set-specific inventory are the foundation; “sealed,” “complete,” a finished build, a seller rating, and a matching weight are only partial clues. For sealed boxes, verify the package and seals while accepting that completeness cannot be guaranteed before opening. For opened sets, demand an inventory-backed contents check and a written account of every omission or substitution. If the seller will not make a material claim verifiable, treat it as unverified and price—or reject—the risk.
