No single logo, receipt, QR code, serial number, certificate, or marketplace badge proves an item genuine. If key evidence is missing or contradictory, pause the purchase rather than guessing.
How to assess a limited-edition item
Authenticity is specific to the product and its release. Record the claimed model, drop or season, collaboration, colorway, size, edition or run, and release region. Compare the item with official brand material, archived release references, or reliable documentation for that same variant. A familiar graphic or logo alone cannot establish that the garment has the correct blank, print treatment, or release details.

Build an evidence picture from independent clues. Look for consistency between the seller’s account, the transaction, the item’s physical details, its documentation, and trustworthy same-release references. A cluster of mismatches matters more than one small discrepancy, which could reflect wear, repair, regional production, or manufacturing variation.

Seller and transaction
- Review the seller’s profile, transaction history, feedback, and account age where available. Consider whether the seller’s range of goods is plausible.
- Check the platform’s payment, return, and buyer-protection terms before paying. Be wary of pressure to move the transaction off-platform.

Listing details and photographs
Compare the title, description, condition, size, edition claims, and photographs for internal consistency. If important views are missing, ask the seller for clear, well-lit, current photographs of:

- Stitching, seams, print or embroidery, and placement and proportions.
- Hardware, soles where relevant, wash or distressing, and other release-specific construction details.
- Packaging, accessories, and any edition or serial details.
Dated photographs can help establish that the seller has the item rather than reusing images. Receipts or authorized-retailer records may support provenance, but documents can be forged or may not correspond to the item being sold.
Construction, materials, labels, and packaging
Compare physical details with examples of the exact release and, where possible, its known production variations. Consider material, construction, seams, print or embroidery, hardware, wash or distressing, label relationships, and packaging together. Look for contradictions rather than treating one imperfect detail as a verdict; age, wear, repairs, and production variation can affect appearance.

In the United States, most textile and wool products must carry information about fiber content, country of origin, and the manufacturer or another responsible business. The Federal Trade Commission explains these requirements in its textile and wool labeling guidance. A complete-looking label may help identify inconsistencies, but compliance information is not an authenticity certificate.

Do marketplace authentication services guarantee authenticity?
No. Coverage depends on the specific listing and the service’s current terms. Check the exact item’s eligibility, geography, category, condition rules, exclusions, and return protections rather than assuming that a platform authenticates everything it sells.

eBay
eBay says selected listings on eBay.com are eligible for its streetwear Authenticity Guarantee. The listing needs the current Authenticity Guarantee badge. The service describes a multi-point physical inspection that considers garment structure, materials, tags, logos, original packaging, and accessories. Its terms limit availability by geography and item category; certain modified, signed, or sealed garments are excluded. Confirm the listing’s eligibility and the applicable terms at eBay’s streetwear Authenticity Guarantee page. An eBay QR tag links to an item report after that service’s process; it is not a universal authentication device.
StockX
StockX describes two workflows. For orders on its Verified Marketplace, items are either inspected by its verification experts or sent by qualifying verified sellers. In its Listings Marketplace, select sellers may offer a broader range of item types and conditions, and buyers can choose verification on select listings. These are StockX’s descriptions of its services; check the order-level terms and listing details at StockX’s verification information. A verification result can reduce uncertainty, but it does not mean every item on the marketplace is authenticated.

How to assess collectibles
“Collectibles” covers different categories, including cards, toys, art, coins, signed goods, and physical media. The relevant evidence and qualified specialists vary by object, so do not apply one category’s checks to another.
- Graded items: Check the grading company’s own certification record and confirm that the item matches it.
- Autographs and signed merchandise: Verify the issuer and the certificate standards accepted for that category.
- Limited-run toys or art editions: Compare edition marks and provenance with records from the creator or publisher, where available.
- US imitation political or numismatic items: The Federal Trade Commission’s overview of the Hobby Protection Act describes a narrow US rule covering imitation political items and imitation numismatic items, including coins, tokens, paper money, and commemorative medals. Those imitations must be marked with identifying information that flags them as imitations. This is not a universal authenticity test or a rule for every collectible or country.
When to walk away—and what resellers should keep
Delay or leave the transaction if details conflict, key photographs are unavailable, provenance is weak, or the seller is rushing you. For a high-value item, consider a brand or specialist authenticator with demonstrated expertise in that exact category. No authenticator or platform should be treated as a substitute for checking what its service covers.
If you resell, retain invoices, messages, photographs, accepted grading or authentication documentation, and any serial or edition records. eBay’s counterfeit policy advises sellers, “If authentication can’t be confirmed, don’t list.” See eBay’s counterfeit item policy.
Why careful checks matter
In a 2026 UK government release, the Intellectual Property Office reported that one in four UK pre-loved clothing buyers had unknowingly bought counterfeit clothing online in the previous year. The same release said 45% of UK 18–24-year-olds had encountered counterfeit designer items on resale platforms, compared with 23% of those aged 55–64. Nearly 60% of people who bought counterfeit pre-loved clothing reported poor quality, rapid deterioration, or refund disputes. These are UK findings, not global prevalence estimates: Intellectual Property Office release.
