1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore buying a limited-edition collectible, identify the exact edition and compare the listing’s actual-item photos, packaging and identifiers with official references. Ask the seller for clear, current photos and supporting records; check serial numbers or holograms with the organization that issued them when an official lookup is available. A low price is a reason to investigate, not proof of a fake. If details conflict or remain unclear, pause and seek a specialist familiar with that category.
Start by identifying the exact edition
“Limited edition” is not enough to establish what an item should look like. Record the maker, edition or printing, release or version details, and any model or serial number claimed in the listing. Compare those specifics with official product information and images where available. Similar-looking versions can have different packaging or details, so confirm the version before judging an apparent mismatch.

For trading cards, TCGplayer recommends researching the item’s appearance and differences between printings and versions. Pokémon Support likewise advises buyers to become familiar with official product images and packaging. Those references are more useful than a generic checklist because the relevant details vary by product.

Ask for evidence of the actual item
Request clear, item-specific photos
Prefer photos of the exact item being sold, not stock or promotional images. Ask for clear views of the front, back, packaging, labels, and any serial number, hologram, or other identifier. Compare visible details with official references for the exact edition. If the seller will not provide photos needed to assess the item, you have less evidence on which to base a purchase.
#1 Best Overall
Some counterfeit Pokémon cards may be detectable using bright light, according to Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card guidance, updated May 26, 2026. That is a Pokémon-card-specific clue, not a universal test for toys, art, autographs, or other collectibles.
Check documents against the object
A seller may be able to provide a receipt, certificate of authenticity, grading report, or record from an authentication company. TCGplayer lists receipts, certificates, and authentication-company proof as possible supporting evidence; eBay’s counterfeit policy also advises keeping relevant documentation such as invoices, serial numbers, grading reports, or accepted certificates.

- Beckett Authentication - the company who provides the authenticity of this item. Most items will come with a matching hologram sticker and Certificate. Some items may only come with a hologram attached. Please see images for more details.
- This item has been hand-signed by the athlete or celebrity. This is not a reproduced autograph. Please view image closely to ensure the item quality will meet your needs.
- We may have multiple copies of this item available. There may be slight differences in the one you receive. If there is a Certificate number in the item title, you will receive the exact item pictured unless otherwise stated.
- This item would make a great gift for any Marcus Rashford Fan or Collector
Documents are supporting evidence, not automatic proof. Check who issued them, whether the record can be verified, and whether its description and identifiers match the item in the listing. A certificate paired with a different object, or an unexplained mismatch between a record and an identifier, is a reason to stop and ask questions.
Verify identifiers with the issuing organization
MLB-authenticated memorabilia
For an item covered by the MLB Authentication Program, locate its hologram and enter the prefix and number in MLB’s authentication database. MLB says its authenticated pieces receive a unique alphanumeric hologram and that the lookup displays item details. The program covers items witnessed being signed or used in a game, so make sure the listing’s claim fits that scope. MLB reports that its program has authenticated more than six million items since it began in 2001; that is a program activity total, not a measure of counterfeits in resale listings or across collectibles generally.

Upper Deck Authenticated memorabilia
For eligible Upper Deck Authenticated memorabilia, use the UDA Hologram Data Center. Upper Deck says a successful lookup displays a photo and brief description. If the hologram does not populate, its page advises contacting customer service. A mismatch, unexplained lookup failure, or discrepancy between a certificate and hologram warrants a pause and follow-up with the issuer.
PSA-graded items
For PSA-certified items, review PSA’s security guidance for holder and label details. PSA explicitly cautions that its holders are not tamper-proof. A graded holder or certificate is something to inspect and verify, not a guarantee that the item in a resale listing is genuine.

Judge the price in context
Compare the asking price with reliable references for the same edition and condition. A sharp discount may have an innocent explanation, but it deserves more scrutiny—especially when the seller provides little item-specific evidence. Pokémon Support warns about packs priced dramatically below suggested retail in the context of Pokémon products, and TCGplayer urges caution when expensive items are offered in bulk at huge discounts. Those examples do not establish a universal price threshold for every collectible.

Check what marketplace authentication actually covers
A marketplace authentication badge can help only if the exact listing and item are eligible. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee for Trading Cards has eligibility limits and excludes sets, lots, kits, decks, boxes, packs, art cards, and raw redemption cards. Check the current terms and whether the individual listing carries the applicable program status before relying on it. Marketplace rules and coverage can change.
Best Value
Use a specialist when the evidence is inconclusive
If photos, documents, identifiers, or product details conflict—or you cannot verify them—ask a shop or professional that regularly handles the specific category. Pokémon Support and TCGplayer both suggest specialist review for suspect trading cards. For a high-value item, a recognized authentication service may be appropriate; first check what types of items it covers and how its verification records can be confirmed.
A quick pre-purchase check
- Version: Can you identify the exact edition, printing, or release and compare it with official references?
- Photos: Does the listing show the actual item clearly, including relevant packaging and identifiers?
- Records: Can you check the issuer and confirm the documentation matches this object?
- Lookup: If an issuer offers a serial-number or hologram lookup, does the result match the listing’s item and claim?
- Price: Is the asking price plausible for that edition and condition, or does the discount call for stronger evidence?
- Coverage: If the marketplace offers authentication, is this exact listing eligible under current terms?
- Uncertainty: If important questions remain, can a category specialist inspect it before you commit?
No single photo, certificate, hologram, QR code, serial number, marketplace badge, or seller assurance authenticates every kind of collectible. Treat inconsistent or unverifiable evidence as a reason to pause rather than trying to force a yes-or-no verdict from one clue.
