Matt Dinniman’s official site links to a merch store and provides contact information. Reaching a shop through that navigation is stronger provenance than trusting an unfamiliar domain that puts “official” in its title. Use the August 28, 2026 Playmates announcement for figure claims
Matt Dinniman’s August 28, 2026 announcement identifies Playmates collectibles, statues and loot boxes and names select retail channels. It describes the first wave of six-inch figures as “highly detailed and fully poseable.” Each figure includes interchangeable hands and heads, plus multiple accessories specific to its character.
The first announced figure wave includes Mordecai, Prepotente, Princess Donut and Carl. That list is a comparison point for those announced products, not a permanent limit on future waves. A later release may add characters or use a different format, so date your comparison and check for newer official announcements.
Check the licensee catalog for other product types
INK Games Publishing describes its Matt Dinniman collection as officially licensed and identifies the collaboration with Dinniman. Its catalog examples include a book nook kit, playing cards and puzzle products. Compare an item’s exact catalog name and format rather than assuming that every DCC-branded object belongs to the same figure line.
The catalog’s wording is the licensee’s stated positioning; it is useful evidence of a licensing trail, not an independently audited authentication certificate. If the item is expensive or unusual, ask the licensee or manufacturer to confirm the product directly.
Match the listing to a real product
Compare character and format
Write down what the listing actually claims: character, product type, scale, number of pieces, accessories, edition or wave, and manufacturer. For an announced Playmates figure, a listing that says “six-inch figure” should be checked against the six-inch, poseable format and the interchangeable hands, interchangeable heads and character-specific accessories described by the author.
A listing that changes several of those details deserves follow-up. Examples include a supposedly first-wave figure with no poseability, a different scale presented as the same release, or accessories that do not correspond to the character. Check the exact product name

Separate announced products from fan-made items
Custom art, 3D-printed figures and fan accessories can be legitimate creations while still being unlicensed. They should not be represented as official collectibles. Ask the seller to state plainly whether the item is licensed, fan-made or a modified product. If the answer changes between the listing, messages and invoice, stop and preserve those records.
Verify the seller, not just the object

- Open the retailer’s own website or contact its customer service through an independently verified channel.
- Search for the exact product name, character and manufacturer, not only “Dungeon Crawler Carl.”
- Check whether the item is sold directly by the retailer or by a third-party seller hosted on its platform.
- Compare the seller name, return policy, payment protections and contact details with the listing you found.
- Save a copy of the product page, seller profile, stated condition and delivery promise before paying.
A seller who refuses ordinary buyer protections, will not provide basic identifying information or pressures you to pay outside the platform creates avoidable risk even if the photographs look convincing.
A practical pre-purchase verification workflow
1. Define the claim

2. Trace the route from an official page

3. Build an item-match checklist

4. Verify the seller account
Confirm who will take your payment and ship the item. A listing copied onto several sites may still come from one unauthorized seller. Check the account’s history, location, return terms and consistency of product photographs. None of these checks is a formal authentication service, but together they reveal whether the seller is willing to be accountable.

5. Request item-specific evidence
For a costly secondhand purchase, ask for clear, current photographs of the front, back, sides, bottom, packaging, labels and every included accessory. Request purchase documentation when available and ask the seller to explain where and when the item was obtained. Ask for a photograph showing the item beside a note with the current date if you need to distinguish a personal item from copied catalog images.

What a mismatch means
A figure missing an advertised accessory may be incomplete, opened, damaged or incorrectly described; it is not automatically counterfeit. A different scale or character may indicate a later wave, a statue, a bootleg or a fan-made item. Ask the seller to identify the release and provide the matching official reference before deciding.
Why photographs can mislead
Retail images are commonly reused, cropped or color-corrected. A photograph that exactly matches an official announcement proves only that the seller has access to that image. Insist on current photographs of the actual item, including undersides, labels and accessories, when authenticity matters.

Matt Dinniman’s official page identifies Invitation Bookshop as the regular source for signed preorders and The Signed Page as the provider of white-glove first-edition service. Those statements concern signed books. They should not be generalized to every signed figure, statue or other collectible.
For a signed book, compare the edition, printing details, signature location and seller’s documentation with the named channel. For an autographed non-book item, request evidence tying it to a specific signing or purchase and contact the relevant source if the value justifies it. A certificate supplied by a reseller is not automatically an official DCC certificate.

- The listing uses “official” but gives no manufacturer, licensee or traceable retailer.
- The title combines several characters or product types without identifying a real release.
- The seller’s photos are only cropped promotional images and never show the actual item.
- The scale, accessories or included parts conflict with the announced product description and the seller cannot explain why.
- The seller claims that a hologram, serial number or certificate is mandatory, although no product-specific official source is provided.
- The seller refuses normal returns, buyer protection or reasonable provenance questions.
- The item is described as “rare” or “exclusive” without an edition, release wave or source.
- The seller changes the story about whether the item is licensed, custom-made, opened or complete.
None of these clues is a standalone counterfeit test. Their value is diagnostic: they tell you where the seller’s claim is not yet supported.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not authenticate by price alone
A bargain can reflect a sale, an opened box, missing parts or a seller who wants a quick transaction. A high price can simply be an inflated asking price. No official source reviewed here publishes a DCC counterfeit-rate statistic or a price threshold that proves authenticity.

Do not treat spelling or print quality as conclusive
Typos, color differences and uneven packaging can indicate a problem, but regional packaging and production variations also exist. Use them to trigger a product-and-provenance check, not to issue a verdict by eye.

Do not infer authorization from a search result
Search engines and marketplace titles are not licensing records. Follow the author’s navigation, consult the relevant catalog and verify the exact seller account.
Do not assume every DCC product shares one authentication system
Figures, statues, loot boxes, games, puzzles, book nook kits, playing cards and signed books can come from different partners and have different documentation. A rule that applies to one product should not be exported to another without an official statement.
Worked examples
Example: a first-wave figure listing
A listing claims to sell a six-inch Princess Donut figure. The seller provides photographs of a poseable figure, interchangeable hands and heads, and character-specific accessories, but no manufacturer information. The physical description is compatible with the announced format, yet the seller link is incomplete. Ask for packaging labels, the exact source of purchase and current photographs. The listing shows a static statue several times larger than six inches and calls it part of the first figure wave. That is a material format conflict. Ask whether it is a separately announced statue, a later product, a custom piece or an incorrectly titled listing. Do not rely on the Carl character match to overlook the mismatch.
Example: an INK Games puzzle
The seller identifies an INK Games puzzle by the exact name used in the current Matt Dinniman collection and supplies photographs of the box, contents and license information. Verify that the seller is authorized or has a documented secondhand purchase, then compare the contents with the catalog. The presence of the product in a licensee catalog supports a licensing trail; it does not by itself prove that this particular seller’s copy is genuine.
Keep a simple evidence record
Before buying, save the official reference page, seller listing, photographs, messages, stated contents, price and payment details in one folder. Note the date because catalogs, retailer stock and product waves change. If the item arrives materially different from the description, photograph the package before opening it, preserve all materials and use the documented dispute or return process.
For high-value disputes, provide the licensee or manufacturer with the product name, release claim, seller information and clear images. Specific, organized evidence is more useful than a general assertion that an item “looks fake.”
