No regulator sets one percentage that is “too much” for every investor. A concentration that is tolerable for one person may be unsuitable for another, so the useful output is a documented view of what could drive your portfolio and why that exposure fits—or does not fit—your plan.

What concentration risk means in an AI portfolio
Concentration risk is the possibility that an unusually large share of your results depends on one common driver. In an AI-themed portfolio, that driver might be a single company supplying chips, cloud capacity, models or software; a narrow technology industry; one country; one type of security; or a cluster of funds that own the same companies.
Diversification is not measured by the number of line items. A portfolio can contain ten funds and still behave like one trade if those funds repeatedly hold the same few issuers. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains that a fund can be narrowly focused, and advises investors to examine fund top holdings rather than assume a fund’s name proves diversification. Its mutual-fund guidance notes that concentration in an industry, sector or geographical area can produce a less diversified portfolio and greater performance volatility than a fund without that concentration (Asset Allocation and Diversification; How to Read a Mutual Fund Prospectus).

AI exposure can also be indirect. A broad-market index fund may own major technology companies whose revenue is influenced by AI spending even when “AI” is absent from the fund’s name. Conversely, an AI-labeled fund may hold companies with different business lines, geographies and risk factors. The only reliable starting point is the current holdings and the fund’s stated mandate.
Why several AI funds can still be one overlapping position
Fund names are not exposure maps
Names describe an objective or theme, not the complete portfolio. Two funds with different names may both allocate heavily to the same semiconductor designer, cloud provider or software platform. A fund may also change its holdings as markets move or as its manager rebalances. Use the latest fact sheet, portfolio file, prospectus and shareholder report available for the relevant date.
Count look-through ownership, not just wrappers
Suppose you own a technology ETF, an AI innovation fund and shares of a large technology company. The company’s weight inside each fund must be combined with your direct holding. If a fund reports that a company is 8% of its assets and you own 20% of your portfolio in that fund, the fund contributes 1.6 percentage points of portfolio exposure to that issuer (8% × 20%). Add that contribution to any other fund and direct position containing the same issuer.

This arithmetic is a review technique, not a regulator-defined scoring system. It helps reveal why a portfolio with apparently modest individual positions can have a large aggregate dependency.
A repeatable concentration-risk review
Complete the following sequence whenever you build an AI allocation, change a fund, or undertake a periodic portfolio review. Keep the statement dates and fund-report dates beside each figure because both market values and holdings change.
1. Inventory the whole portfolio
- List every taxable, retirement and other investment account that belongs to the household decision you are reviewing.
- Record each direct security, mutual fund, exchange-traded fund (ETF), cash position and other asset category, along with its market value and the statement date.
- Include positions held at different firms; reviewing only one account can hide the largest exposure elsewhere.
- Calculate each position’s percentage of the combined portfolio using
position value ÷ total portfolio value. Preserve the raw values so you can update the review after market moves.
The SEC’s allocation guidance frames diversification as a property of the overall portfolio, not a single account. The inventory therefore needs to cover the complete set of assets relevant to your goal.
2. Look through every fund
- Open the fund’s current holdings or portfolio page and note the date of the data.
- Capture the largest positions, their weights and the number of holdings. A large holding count does not by itself establish broad diversification.
- Repeat for every fund, including broad-market funds that may contain the same technology issuers as your AI-themed funds.
- Match fund positions to your direct securities. Treat different share classes or listings of the same issuer as one economic exposure when appropriate.
Investor.gov specifically recommends checking whether the top holdings of different funds differ. If they do not, the funds may add fees or complexity without adding much independent diversification.

3. Group the exposure by four dimensions
Build a simple worksheet with one row per issuer and columns for the categories below. An issuer can appear in more than one category, so do not force mutually exclusive labels where the business is diversified.

| Dimension | What to ask | Examples of a concentration signal |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer | How much of the portfolio depends on one company or corporate group? | A direct holding plus repeated top positions in several funds. |
| Industry or sector | Would companies in the same economic segment likely react to the same shock? | Many semiconductor, cloud-computing or software positions moving together after one demand or regulation change. |
| Geography | Which countries or regions supply the revenue, listings, currency and regulation behind the holdings? | Funds that appear different but are all dominated by one country or market. |
| Asset category | Is the portfolio balanced across stocks, bonds, cash and other categories suited to the goal? | AI equities becoming most of the portfolio while stabilizing assets shrink. |
The SEC’s investor materials discuss concentration by industry, sector and geography, and explain diversification both between and within asset categories. Applying all four views prevents a portfolio from looking diversified in one dimension while remaining concentrated in another.
4. Compare actual weights with the intended allocation
Write down the allocation you meant to hold before examining today’s percentages. Compare the two side by side. Price increases in a fast-growing AI company or fund can raise its share even if you never bought more. The SEC illustrates this type of allocation drift with a stock allocation rising from 60% to 80%; that example demonstrates how weights can change, not a recommended limit or a published market statistic (SEC asset-allocation guidance).
Flag differences that matter to your plan: a higher equity share before a near-term spending need, a smaller cash reserve, or a technology exposure that is materially larger than the role you assigned it. Record whether the difference came from new contributions, withdrawals, price changes or a fund substitution.

Use the prospectus and the most recent shareholder report, not just a marketing page. For each fund, verify:
- Investment objective: what the fund is designed to pursue.
- Strategy and selection rules: how it chooses securities, whether it can use derivatives, and any limits on industry, sector or geography.
- Principal risks: concentration, volatility, foreign-market, liquidity, technology, regulatory and other risks identified by the fund.
- Fees and expenses: costs that reduce returns and may be duplicated when multiple funds hold similar exposures.
- Current portfolio information: top holdings, sector and geographic breakdowns, and the report date.
- Performance context: how the fund has behaved, without treating past performance as a forecast.
The SEC’s ETF guidance directs investors to the prospectus and latest shareholder report when evaluating an ETF’s portfolio, risks and costs (Exchange-Traded Funds). A fund’s label is not a substitute for this review.
6. Decide what deserves attention in context
Not every large position is an error. Ask how a loss in the concentrated exposure would affect the specific goal, the date the money is needed, emergency reserves, income stability and ability to tolerate volatility. Then decide whether the exposure is intentional, accidental drift, or overlap you did not realize you owned.
Possible responses include rebalancing, directing new contributions toward underweight assets, reducing an overweight position, or changing the mix of funds. The SEC describes selling overweight assets, adding to underweight assets and changing ongoing contributions as examples of rebalancing approaches; these are general methods, not an individualized trade instruction.
7. Verify any AI-generated analysis independently
Portfolio applications and chatbots can speed up sorting, but they can misread a ticker, use stale holdings, omit an account or confuse a company’s business segments. Compare every material output with the issuer’s filing, fund disclosure or account statement. Keep a copy of the data date and the assumptions used.

A joint alert from the SEC, NASAA and FINRA dated January 25, 2024 states: “Be cautious about using AI-generated information to make investment decisions or to attempt to predict changes in the stock market’s direction or in the price of a security.” The alert also warns about pitches promising guaranteed returns with little or no risk (Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Investment Fraud: Investor Alert). This is an information-quality and fraud warning, not a finding that AI-related investments as a category are unsuitable.
How to calculate overlap without pretending to know the “right” number
Aggregate issuer exposure
For each issuer, add direct ownership to the issuer’s weighted contribution from every fund. If a portfolio has 10% directly in Company A, Fund X is 20% of the portfolio with Company A at 5%, and Fund Y is 15% with Company A at 4%, the estimated issuer exposure is 10% + 1% + 0.6% = 11.6%. The example is purely illustrative; it is a way to expose duplicate ownership, not a safe-harbor percentage.
Top-holdings concentration
Sort the look-through issuer weights from largest to smallest and inspect the largest few together. A portfolio may have dozens of small positions while a handful of shared leaders account for most of the value. Do not call the result diversified solely because the fund reports hundreds of securities.
Sector, geography and asset-category totals
Sum issuer weights by the sector, country or asset category you assigned. Decide classification rules before adding numbers—for example, whether a multinational is grouped by listing country, revenue exposure or the fund’s own classification—and apply the same rule throughout. Document the rule so a later review is comparable.
Overlap matrix for funds
Create a table with funds down the left and recurring top issuers across the top. Enter each fund’s percentage in each issuer. Repeated high cells show where a new fund may add little independent exposure. Also compare objectives and strategies: two funds can share holdings today but have different rules that may cause them to diverge later.
What percentage of concentration is too much?
There is no universal threshold in the SEC materials that defines excessive concentration for every investor, and the guidance does not establish a special maximum AI allocation. A percentage can only be judged against the investor’s objective, horizon, risk tolerance and complete balance sheet. Someone saving for a distant goal with substantial capacity for loss may choose a different concentration from someone relying on the portfolio for near-term expenses.
Use percentages as prompts for investigation, not automatic buy-or-sell triggers. Ask:

- Would that loss delay a required payment, reduce emergency liquidity or force a sale at an unfavorable time?
- Does the exposure reflect a deliberate thesis documented in the plan, or did price appreciation and fund overlap create it unintentionally?
- Are offsetting assets genuinely different, or do they share the same economic and geographic drivers?
- Can you keep the position through a prolonged downturn without abandoning the rest of the plan?
If you cannot explain why the exposure is present and how it fits the goal, treat that lack of clarity as a reason to investigate further rather than as evidence that the holding is acceptable.

How to compare two AI-related funds or exposures
When deciding whether a second fund adds diversification or merely another wrapper, compare the following axes in one worksheet.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to collect | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying holdings and overlap | Current top holdings, weights and overlap with direct positions and other funds. | Does this exposure add different issuers or repeat the largest risks? |
| Concentration dimensions | Industry, sector, geography and asset-category breakdowns. | Would the same shock affect both exposures? |
| Mandate and strategy | Objective, selection methodology, rebalancing rules and permitted instruments. | Are the funds genuinely pursuing different roles? |
| Risk and investor fit | Principal risks, volatility context, goal date, loss capacity and tolerance. | Can the household sustain the exposure through its plausible drawdowns? |
| Costs and disclosure | Expense information, prospectus, shareholder report and data dates. | Are additional fees justified by a distinct exposure or service? |
“AI” in a name does not answer any of these questions. The prospectus and current portfolio do.
A worked, hypothetical review
Imagine a $100,000 portfolio with $25,000 in a broad-market fund, $20,000 in an AI-themed fund, $15,000 in a semiconductor fund, $10,000 in direct shares of Company A, and $30,000 in bonds and cash. The AI-themed fund is 7% Company A and the semiconductor fund is 5% Company A. Look-through exposure to Company A is therefore $10,000 directly + $1,400 through the AI fund + $750 through the semiconductor fund, or $12,150 (12.15% of the portfolio).
Recommended Free Tools
The same worksheet might show that the broad-market fund also owns Company A, add that contribution, and reveal that the three funds share several other technology issuers. The investor would then compare the resulting issuer and sector totals with the intended allocation and the date the money is needed. Nothing in this illustration establishes that 12.15% is safe or unsafe; the point is to expose the total dependency that ticker-by-ticker inspection would miss.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I own many securities, so I am diversified.”
Why it fails: Securities can share the same issuer, sector, country or economic driver.
Correction: Perform look-through grouping and inspect the largest combined exposures.
“The fund is broad because its name does not say AI.”
Why it fails: A broad fund can still have substantial technology exposure, while a named theme can be narrow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCorrection: Read the current sector and top-holdings tables and the prospectus strategy.
Best Value
“The holdings page I saved last year is sufficient.”
Why it fails: Fund holdings and portfolio weights change.
Correction: Record the report date and refresh the analysis using current disclosures.
“A chatbot says the portfolio is diversified.”
Why it fails: Generated output can be incomplete, inaccurate or based on stale data.
Correction: Reconcile each material claim to statements, filings or fund reports, and reject guaranteed-return promises.
“Rebalancing means selling whatever rose.”
Why it fails: A trade can have tax, transaction-cost and goal consequences, and the right mix depends on the whole financial situation.
Correction: Revisit the written allocation, consider contributions or withdrawals as alternatives, and obtain individualized advice when the decision is consequential.
Keeping the review current
Concentration is a moving condition, not a one-time label. Set a review schedule that matches your circumstances and revisit the worksheet after a major market move, a fund replacement, a new direct holding, a withdrawal or a change in the goal date. At each review:
- Use the newest account statements and fund holdings.
- Save the data dates and your classification rules.
- Check issuer, sector, geography and asset-category totals again.
- Compare actual weights with the written target allocation.
- Record why any change is intentional and what risk it introduces.
- Review fees and documents for funds you add or keep.
For a complicated household, a registered investment professional can help assess overlap and suitability. Verify credentials and the scope of any service independently; the SEC guidance supports considering the overall portfolio and risk tolerance but does not endorse a particular provider.
Practical checklist
- Have I included every relevant account and direct security?
- Have I used current holdings for every fund?
- Have I added indirect ownership of the same issuer?
- Have I grouped exposure by issuer, industry or sector, geography and asset category?
- Have I compared today’s weights with my intended allocation?
- Have I read each fund’s objective, strategy, principal risks, fees and latest report?
- Can I explain how a major loss in the concentrated exposure would affect my goal and timeline?
- Did I verify any AI-generated analysis against primary documents?
- Is any response—rebalancing, new contributions or holding steady—consistent with my plan rather than a prediction?
Completing this checklist will not forecast an AI stock or identify a magic cutoff. It will show which holdings and common drivers can materially influence the portfolio, whether that dependence is intentional, and what information you still need before changing course.
