How to Spot Concentration Risk in a Technology-Heavy Portfolio

To spot concentration risk, map every investment account, look through each fund to its underlying holdings, and measure exposure at four levels: individual issuer, sector and industry, repeated positions, and asset class. Then compare the resulting mix with your goals, time horizon and ability and willingness to absorb losses. A portfolio can own many technology funds and still depend on the same few companies or on equities as a whole.

What concentration risk means

Concentration risk is the possibility that too much of a portfolio’s outcome depends on one company, a group of related companies, one sector, or one asset class. Losses can be larger when holdings respond to the same event at the same time. Concentration can be visible, such as a large direct position in one stock, or hidden inside funds that appear unrelated.

Technology concentration is not defined by a universal percentage. Investor.gov’s Asset Allocation and Diversification guidance, accessed October 13, 2026, does not set one technology-allocation limit that automatically makes a personal portfolio too concentrated. The relevant question is whether the exposure fits your own objectives and risk tolerance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Risk tolerance has two parts: your willingness to accept losses and your financial ability to withstand them. A high expected return does not remove the possibility of a large or prolonged decline. A portfolio that looks acceptable for a distant goal may be unsuitable for money needed soon.

Start with a complete exposure inventory

Review all taxable, retirement and other investment accounts together. Concentration often remains hidden when each account is examined separately. Include accounts with different providers and any position held through an employer plan if it is part of the money available for the same goals.

  1. Set a valuation date. Download a current holdings report for every account and record the date and market value. Using one date where possible makes the totals comparable. If reports have different dates, label the discrepancy rather than implying precision.
  2. Collect current values. Record market value, not only the number of shares. The same share count can represent very different risk after prices move.
  3. List direct positions. Record each stock, bond or other security and calculate its percentage of the combined portfolio.
  4. List every fund. Note each mutual fund or ETF, its stated mandate, and its market value. Mark products described as technology, semiconductor, software, growth, innovation or another narrow theme.
  5. Gather underlying holdings. Open the latest holdings file or portfolio disclosure for each fund. Holdings change, so note the disclosure date and whether it is a full portfolio or only a top-holdings list.
  6. Deduplicate issuers. Combine a company held directly with the same company held through one or more funds. Do not treat a fund ticker as a separate source of diversification when it owns the same businesses as another fund.
  7. Separate exposure from cash. Identify uninvested cash and cash-like positions so that a large account balance is not mistaken for diversified investment exposure.

Your inventory should show both the security you purchased and the economic exposures underneath it. A fund count is a starting point, not a diversification measurement. Save the reports used so you can tell whether a later change reflects a market move, a fund rebalance or a new purchase.

Measure single-issuer exposure

For each issuer, add the value of direct shares and the look-through value held by funds. Divide that total by the portfolio’s market value:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

issuer weight = (direct value + value held through funds) ÷ total portfolio value

Repeat the calculation for every issuer that appears among your largest positions. Include common stock, depositary receipts and other instruments that represent the same company where applicable. If a fund reports only approximate or dated weights, identify the result as an estimate.

Why the largest positions matter

A broad fund may own hundreds of securities while allocating a substantial share to its largest holdings. If several funds use similar large-cap or growth benchmarks, the same issuers can dominate the combined portfolio.

Look at both the largest single issuer and the combined weight of the largest five or ten issuers. Those groupings are diagnostic, not universal limits. A personal ceiling depends on your plan, other assets, income stability and capacity for loss. A household with substantial non-portfolio assets may face a different overall concentration than the account statement alone suggests, but that outside context should be documented rather than assumed.

Source Portfolio share invested in the source Issuer A share inside source Issuer A contribution
Direct holding 8% 100% 8.0%
Fund X 15% 10% 1.5%
Fund Y 10% 8% 0.8%
Fund Z 5% 4% 0.2%
Total exposure to Issuer A 10.5%

The investor sees four line items, but 10.5% of the total portfolio depends on one issuer. The same calculation can reveal that a seemingly small direct position becomes material after fund holdings are included. Repeat it after material deposits, withdrawals or price changes because the percentages can move without a trade.

Find overlapping holdings inside funds

Investor.gov specifically advises checking the top holdings of multiple mutual funds and ETFs. Two funds can have different names, managers or strategies while owning many of the same companies. A narrowly focused fund does not become broad merely because it is packaged as an ETF or because it holds more tickers than a single stock.

Build an overlap worksheet

  1. Copy the top holdings and weights from each fund’s latest disclosure.
  2. Standardize issuer names so subsidiaries, share classes and abbreviations are recognized as the same economic exposure when appropriate.
  3. Multiply each holding’s fund weight by the fund’s share of your total portfolio.
  4. Add contributions for the same issuer across all funds and direct positions.
  5. Rank the resulting issuer totals from largest to smallest.
  6. Flag holdings whose disclosure dates differ materially; treat the combined result as a range or screen rather than an exact current weight.

For a quick screen, compare the top 10 holdings of every fund side by side. For a more accurate measure, use the complete holdings files because overlap below the top 10 can still be significant. Record each fund’s mandate as well as its holdings: a fund that can change sectors quickly may not behave like one with a fixed mandate.

Signals that funds are not adding much diversification

  • Several funds have the same companies among their top holdings.
  • Fund mandates all emphasize technology, growth, innovation or a closely related theme.
  • The largest positions are similar even when the funds use different labels.
  • A narrowly focused fund is being counted as a broad-market counterweight.
  • Adding another fund increases the number of tickers but barely changes the underlying issuer list.
  • Two funds track different indexes but draw heavily from the same large technology companies.

Fund overlap is not automatically a mistake. It becomes a concentration concern when the repeated positions create a larger exposure than your plan intends. Overlap can also be intentional; the key is knowing the aggregate weight and accepting the resulting risk.

Check sector and industry exposure

After issuer-level analysis, group holdings by sector and, where useful, by industry. Use one classification system consistently and record which system you used; providers can classify the same company differently.

Technology-related exposure can sit outside an information-technology label. A company may be classified in communications, consumer discretionary, industrials or another sector while its earnings depend heavily on software, data centers, cloud infrastructure, digital advertising, automation or semiconductor demand. Decide in advance how you will treat businesses whose economic exposure is materially tied to technology, then apply that rule consistently. Keep the formal provider classification and your broader economic-exposure classification in separate columns so neither is presented as the only objective answer.

Calculate sector weights

For each sector, add direct holdings and the look-through sector value of funds. If a fund reports sector percentages, multiply those percentages by the fund’s portfolio weight. If a fund does not provide enough detail, mark the result as approximate rather than presenting false precision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review both the formal technology-sector percentage and a broader “technology-related” percentage based on your stated classification method. The second number can reveal dependence on a common technology cycle even when formal sector labels appear diversified. Note whether a fund is allowed to change its sector mix, since a static snapshot does not guarantee a stable future exposure.

Industry-level concentration

Sector diversification can hide industry concentration. Software, semiconductors, hardware, online services and technology-enabled financial businesses may react differently, but they can also share supply-chain, capital-spending, regulatory or demand shocks. Group at the industry level when a common driver matters to your portfolio. Examples of shared drivers include corporate technology budgets, data-center construction, chip supply, advertising demand or rules governing data and privacy.

Test asset-class concentration separately

Owning many technology issuers does not make a portfolio diversified if nearly all of its value is in equities. Investor.gov treats diversification among securities within an asset class and diversification across asset classes as separate decisions.

Calculate the percentage in equities, bonds, cash and any other asset categories you intentionally use. Then examine the equity portion by sector and issuer. A portfolio can pass one test and fail another:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Many stocks but almost no bonds or cash: diversified by issuer, concentrated in equities.
  • Several sectors but one dominant company: diversified by sector, concentrated by issuer.
  • Many funds but repeated technology holdings: diversified by fund wrapper, concentrated by underlying businesses.
  • Several technology industries but one common regulatory or economic driver: diversified by industry labels, concentrated by shared risk.

Asset-class analysis should use the same total-portfolio denominator as the issuer analysis. Otherwise, a bond fund in one account can appear to offset stock risk in another without actually being counted in the household total.

Understand why technology concentration can be volatile

An SEC-filed 485BPOS fund prospectus warns that technology-related companies face intense competition, rapid product obsolescence, uncertain commercial success, changing technology and regulation. It also notes that technology securities may lag other industries or the broader market. These are risk disclosures, not a prediction that technology will underperform.

Technology companies can also respond similarly to a common shock. The prospectus states: “Companies in the same sector may be similarly affected by economic, regulatory, political or market events or conditions, which may make the Portfolio more vulnerable to unfavorable developments in that sector than a fund that has a more diversified portfolio.”

Shared exposure can arise through customer budgets, financing costs, supply chains, intellectual-property rules, data or privacy regulation, export controls and short product cycles. Famous or large companies are not exempt from these risks. A strong past performance record can increase concentration if rising prices make a group of holdings a larger share of the portfolio.

Use concentration thresholds with care

One SEC-filed S-6/A trust disclosure defines that trust as concentrated when 25% or more is invested in one sector. That 25% figure describes the cited trust’s governing disclosure; it is not an SEC recommendation or a universal personal limit.

Do not turn a filing’s definition into an automatic sell rule. Instead, use any threshold in your own investment policy as a trigger for review. Document what the threshold measures, whether it includes look-through fund exposure, and what action follows. A threshold that ignores indirect holdings can understate risk, while a rigid rule can create unnecessary trading. A threshold can prompt a conversation or a fresh calculation without dictating an outcome.

Compare the measured mix with your plan

Once the numbers are assembled, compare them with three personal factors:

Goals and time horizon

Money needed soon has less time to recover from a technology-led drawdown than money for a distant goal. Match the portfolio’s potential volatility to when withdrawals are expected, not only to a long-term return objective. Consider separate goals separately if their dates and required amounts differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ability to absorb loss

Consider emergency reserves, stable income, debt obligations and whether a large decline would force you to sell. Ability to take risk is different from believing you can tolerate it. A portfolio review should include the consequences of a forced sale, not just an expected average return.

Willingness to tolerate loss

Investor.gov describes risk tolerance as the ability and willingness to lose some or all of the original investment in exchange for potentially greater returns. If a technology decline would cause you to abandon your plan, the allocation may be too aggressive even if your finances could withstand it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Recheck for drift after market moves

Strong relative performance can push a holding or sector above its intended allocation and change the portfolio’s risk level. Investor.gov describes calendar-based reviews and preset percentage-drift reviews as possible rebalancing approaches, while noting that rebalancing generally works best when done relatively infrequently.

  1. Choose a review interval or a drift band in advance.
  2. Recalculate issuer, sector, industry and asset-class weights using current market values.
  3. Compare each result with your written target allocation.
  4. If a position is outside the plan, consider directing new contributions toward underweight areas before selling.
  5. If selling is necessary, evaluate taxes, fees and account rules before placing an order.
  6. Record the decision and the reason so the next review is consistent.

Rebalancing is a risk-control decision, not a forecast of which sector will perform next. Personal tax circumstances, transaction costs and legal restrictions can materially affect the preferred method. Trading solely because a number crossed a threshold can create costs without changing the underlying exposure if the replacement fund owns the same companies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare a technology-heavy portfolio with a broader alternative

When evaluating whether a change would improve diversification, compare the two portfolios on the same axes rather than counting funds.

Comparison axis What to measure Question to answer
Issuer exposure Largest individual weights and aggregate issuer totals Does one company or a small group dominate?
Sector and industry Technology and technology-related shares under a stated classification method Are common business drivers concentrated?
Underlying overlap Repeated holdings across funds and their portfolio contribution Do additional funds add different businesses?
Asset-class mix Equities versus bonds, cash and other chosen categories Is the entire portfolio dependent on equity markets?
Goal and risk fit Alignment with time horizon, objectives and loss tolerance Could the investor stay with the plan during a severe decline?

A broader alternative is useful only if it changes the underlying exposures that matter. Replacing one technology fund with several similarly composed funds may leave concentration essentially unchanged. Compare costs and trading consequences separately; a lower fund count or a new label is not evidence of lower risk.

Practical warning signs and responses

  • One issuer appears directly and in several funds: perform a look-through issuer calculation before adding more.
  • Most top holdings repeat across funds: compare complete holdings or reduce redundant mandates.
  • Technology exposure rises after a market rally: run the drift review against your written target.
  • Formal sector labels look diversified but businesses share technology drivers: add an industry or economic-exposure grouping.
  • Nearly all assets are equities: analyze asset-class allocation separately from sector diversification.
  • Holdings reports have different dates: label estimates and refresh them before making a major decision.
  • A filing’s 25% definition is treated as a personal rule: restore the trust-specific context and compare with your own plan.
  • You cannot explain the risk in a one-page inventory: simplify the holdings or obtain professional advice before making major changes.

A repeatable review checklist

  1. Combine every account into one market-value total.
  2. List direct securities and every fund.
  3. Download dated fund holdings and mandates.
  4. Aggregate repeated issuers across direct and indirect positions.
  5. Calculate sector and industry weights using a documented classification method.
  6. Calculate equities, bonds, cash and other asset-class weights.
  7. Flag stale, incomplete or approximate holdings data.
  8. Compare the results with goals, time horizon, ability to absorb losses and willingness to tolerate them.
  9. Set a deliberate review date or drift rule.
  10. When action is needed, consider contributions first and account for taxes, fees and personal circumstances before selling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my ETFs are diversified?

Compare their latest top holdings and mandates, then calculate each repeated issuer’s contribution to your total portfolio. Different ETF names do not guarantee different underlying companies; a narrowly focused fund is not automatically broad diversification.

What is diversification?

Diversification means spreading exposure among securities and, separately, among asset classes. Owning many technology stocks can reduce single-company exposure while leaving the portfolio highly concentrated in equities or in one shared technology cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 25% a safe maximum for technology exposure?

No universal personal maximum is established here. A 25% concentration definition appears in one SEC-filed trust disclosure and applies to that trust. Use your own goals, time horizon, ability to absorb losses and willingness to tolerate them when setting review triggers.

How often should I check for concentration risk?

Use a deliberate calendar interval or a preset percentage-drift rule. Investor.gov notes that rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. Recheck sooner after major deposits, withdrawals or sharp market moves, and use dated holdings so the comparison is meaningful.

Should I sell a technology fund when it becomes a large position?

Not automatically. First confirm the look-through issuer, sector, industry and asset-class weights, then compare them with your written plan. Redirecting new contributions may reduce exposure; if selling is considered, account for taxes, fees, account rules and personal circumstances.

The Bottom Line

Concentration risk becomes visible when you look through every account and fund, add repeated issuers, classify technology-related businesses consistently, and test the equity mix separately from sector diversification. Use the numbers to compare your actual exposure with your own goals and loss capacity—not with a universal technology percentage or a fund count.
