What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start with patterns, not a single suspicious number. A sudden unexplained spike followed by a drop, an unexpected country supplying most of a track’s plays, a surprising traffic source such as Spotify’s “Other,” or a brief burst of followers can justify an investigation. None of those signals, alone, proves that streams are artificial or that an artist knowingly caused them. Compare the change with real releases, campaigns and audience activity, document what you see, and ask your label or distributor to investigate. Report suspicious playlists to the platform rather than trying to diagnose or remove bots yourself.
What an artificial stream is—and what analytics can actually tell you
Spotify defines an artificial stream as “a stream that doesn’t reflect genuine user listening intent, including any instance of attempting to manipulate Spotify by using automated processes (e.g. bots or scripts).” The definition covers automated plays and other manipulation, but it does not turn every unusual result into proof. Legitimate publicity, a viral mention, a tour stop, a playlist feature, a release in a new market or delayed reporting can all change a dashboard quickly.

Analytics are therefore an early-warning system. They help you identify a period or source that deserves review; the platform and your distributor or label determine whether activity is confirmed as artificial. Keep that distinction in your language and records: write “unexplained spike,” “unexpected source” or “possible artificial activity” until an official review reaches a conclusion.

The practical stakes are different from what a private dashboard may suggest. Spotify says confirmed artificial streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public numbers or charts, and do not positively influence recommendation systems. Depending on severity, a track can lose playlist placement and a distributor can face penalties or account action. YouTube separately prohibits artificial increases to views and other metrics; artificial traffic does not count and can lead to strikes.

Warning signs worth investigating
A spike followed by a sharp drop
A track that jumps far above its established range and then falls back shortly afterward matches one of Spotify’s example warning patterns. Look at the exact dates and the shape of the curve rather than only the largest daily total. A release-day burst, press coverage or a legitimate campaign can create a similar curve, so check those explanations before calling it manipulation.
An unexplained concentration in one location
Spotify specifically flags an increase from a location where your tracks were not previously active. A new country is not proof of bots: a local article, creator using your song, a fan community or a properly targeted campaign can open a real audience there. The useful question is whether you can connect the timing and size of the geographic change to a known event, not whether the country itself looks unusual.
Most plays attributed to a surprising source
Traffic-source labels need context. Spotify lists a majority of streams from surprising sources, including “Other,” as a reason to investigate. “Other” is not a synonym for fraudulent; it is a category that may not explain the listener journey in the way a named playlist, profile or search result does. Compare its share before, during and after the anomaly and record any playlist or campaign changes at the same time.
A short-lived follower increase
A burst of followers that quickly reverses or stops can accompany suspicious activity, and Spotify includes short-lived follower growth among its examples. Followers can also arrive after a real piece of coverage and later plateau. Examine follower timing alongside plays, listeners, saves and source data instead of treating the follower graph as a standalone test.

Several changes occurring together
The strongest reason to open a case is a cluster: for example, a sharp play increase, a new geography, an unexplained source and a temporary follower jump in the same period. Even a cluster remains a warning sign, not a public bot-detection formula. Spotify does not publish a universal play threshold that artists can apply to label individual streams.
Check legitimate explanations before escalating
Build a timeline for the affected track. Mark the release date, editorial or independent playlist additions, advertising start and end dates, social posts, press coverage, live shows, creator placements, radio activity and any change in your distributor or label promotion. Include time-zone differences when comparing a campaign schedule with daily analytics.
Ask anyone who ran promotion to describe how listeners were reached. A legitimate operator should be able to explain the audience, channels and targeting without promising a fixed number of streams. Spotify warns that paid third-party services guaranteeing streams or guaranteed playlist placement are not legitimate and may violate its terms. A service’s promise is a risk signal even before you see an unusual graph.

Step-by-step investigation workflow
- Preserve the view. Record the track, date range, dashboard section, play and listener totals, follower change, locations, traffic sources and visible playlist names. Save dated screenshots or exports where the service permits them. Note the dashboard’s reporting time zone.
- Describe the anomaly neutrally. Use wording such as “streams rose from 2–6 May and returned to baseline on 9 May” or “68% of reported plays came from a country with no prior activity.” Do not label the plays fake in your first note.
- Compare a baseline. Review a comparable period before the change and, if available, the period afterward. Check whether listeners, saves, repeat listeners and followers moved with streams. A stream-only change deserves closer examination, but no single ratio is a platform rule.
- Overlay known events. Match the dates against release activity, advertising, media coverage, touring, fan campaigns and playlist placements. Include activity by collaborators or a label if you do not control every promotion channel.
- Inspect source and geography changes. Identify the countries, cities, playlists, profiles and source categories that changed most. A concentration can be legitimate; the key is whether a documented audience or campaign explains it.
- Review promotion contracts and messages. Ask hired marketers what methods they used, where listeners were reached and whether they guaranteed streams or placement. Keep invoices, campaign briefs and replies. Refusal to explain methods or a guarantee of outcomes is a reason to stop the service and tell your distributor.
- Contact your label or distributor. Send the timeline, screenshots or exports, campaign details and the names and methods of promotion services. Spotify says labels and distributors can work with its team and receive monthly reports about confirmed artificial streaming.
- Report suspicious playlists. Use Spotify’s reporting route for a suspicious Spotify playlist. If the activity appears on another service, use that service’s own support and reporting process; there is no single cross-platform form established by the platform guidance.
- Check later records. Review the next royalty report and any platform or distributor notice. Keep the original dashboard evidence even if the visible numbers later change.
Why your dashboard, public counts and royalties may disagree
Do not treat a private analytics screen as a final royalty ledger. Spotify says confirmed artificial activity may remain temporarily visible in private Spotify for Artists data while associated royalties are withheld and public figures are adjusted. In other cases, confirmed activity can be removed before a dashboard refresh. A visible spike therefore does not guarantee payment, and a missing spike does not prove that no artificial activity was detected.
For royalty questions, Spotify identifies the royalty report from your label or distributor as the most accurate source. That report reflects the accounting process after platform review, rather than the provisional audience view intended for near-real-time analysis.
| View | What it is useful for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Private platform analytics | Spot timing, source, geography and follower anomalies. | May temporarily include confirmed artificial activity, or may lack activity removed before a refresh. |
| Public play counts and charts | See what listeners and chart systems currently display. | Spotify says confirmed artificial streams are excluded from public numbers and charts. |
| Label or distributor royalty report | Check the accounting result for royalties. | Spotify calls this the most accurate royalty source; it may differ from an earlier dashboard view. |
Spotify also says its per-track charge to labels and distributors for flagrant artificial streaming took effect on April 1, 2024. The charge applies only when artificial-streaming rates are very high; the date is a policy detail, not a measure of how common manipulation is.

Tell the distributor if you believe activity was generated against your will. Include contracts, invoices and messages showing what a marketer promised or did. Ask the distributor to confirm whether the platform has identified artificial activity, whether royalties are being withheld or adjusted, and whether any action is required from you. Do not delete records or alter metadata to hide the period under review.
For a suspicious playlist, report the playlist itself and provide the track, playlist name, account and dates. Avoid public accusations based only on analytics. A platform can inspect signals unavailable to an artist, including automated behavior and network patterns.

Spotify’s guidance supports a practical screening process rather than a list of “safe” vendors. Ask four questions before granting access to a campaign:

A guarantee is a warning sign. Legitimate advertising can promise delivery of advertising activity, not a fixed number of genuine listening decisions.
- Can it explain its methods? You should know the platforms, audiences, targeting and reporting it will use. Vague claims about a private playlist network or “algorithmic boosting” are not an explanation.
- Will it identify the campaign source? You need enough information to reconcile dates, locations and traffic sources in your analytics.
- Do prior artists report suspicious activity or distributor warnings? Look for specific, verifiable feedback rather than testimonials that only repeat stream totals.
Never provide credentials or permission on the assumption that a vendor can “fix” an artificial-stream problem by generating more activity. Stop a campaign that changes methods without notice, refuses documentation or asks you to conceal its involvement.

Spotify and YouTube are not interchangeable
Spotify
Spotify’s published examples and consequences apply to Spotify. Confirmed artificial streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public numbers or charts and do not improve recommendation algorithms. Playlist removal, distributor penalties or account action may follow, depending on severity. Spotify directs artists to share promotion details with their label or distributor and to report suspicious playlists.
YouTube
YouTube’s fake-engagement policy prohibits artificially increasing views and other metrics. Artificial traffic does not count and can result in strikes. YouTube also says Analytics subscriber counts can lag the displayed subscriber count by approximately 48 hours while additional verification and spam review occur. That delay is specific to YouTube subscriber metrics; it should not be used as a general explanation for every platform’s analytics difference, nor should Spotify’s dashboard behavior be generalized to YouTube.
Other streaming services
The reviewed platform guidance does not establish a universal detection threshold or reporting path for every service. Follow the service’s own policy and support instructions, then involve your distributor or label for royalty and account questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLimits of self-diagnosis
Public guidance does not provide a numerical cutoff such as a specific number of plays per listener, a country percentage or a follower-to-stream ratio that conclusively identifies bots. It also does not publish a public bot-detection formula, prevalence percentage or measured detection rate that can be responsibly applied to your account.
Consequently, avoid these shortcuts:
- Calling every unfamiliar country fraudulent.
- Assuming a playlist with a large audience is artificial because it produced a sudden result.
- Using a single traffic-source label as proof.
- Equating a private dashboard total with payable royalties.
- Assuming no visible spike means no review occurred.
- Buying a “detection” product or more streams to counter an anomaly.
The correct endpoint is an official platform or distributor determination. Your analytics establish why a question should be asked, not the final answer.
A compact decision checklist
- Did plays, listeners, geography, sources or followers change at the same time?
- Can a release, campaign, press item, tour or creator explain the timing?
- Did a marketer guarantee streams or playlist placement, or refuse to explain methods?
- Have you preserved the dates, views, playlist details and communications?
- Have you sent the facts to your label or distributor without asserting intent?
- Have you reported a suspicious playlist through the relevant platform?
- Have you checked the later royalty report and notices rather than relying on one dashboard snapshot?
Following this sequence protects your records and keeps the investigation focused on evidence. It also gives a distributor the information needed to distinguish a legitimate audience change from activity that requires platform enforcement.
