How to Spot and Report Suspicious Gold Sellers in World of Warcraft

Do not click, pay, download anything, or share account details. Treat unsolicited gold advertisements, leveling offers, reward promises, off-site login pages, and urgent suspension threats as suspicious. Report the contact from the game client, then block or ignore it. If you clicked a link, ran a file, entered credentials, or lost access, secure the account immediately and use Blizzard’s account-recovery process.

Blizzard warns that gold-selling and power-leveling services can lead to account theft, stolen payment information, botting, and further spam. The safest legitimate way to exchange real-world currency for WoW gold is Blizzard’s official WoW Token, not a third-party seller.

Quick decision: what kind of contact did you receive?

The correct report category depends on what the sender is doing. Use this triage table before responding.

Contact or behavior Typical clues Immediate response Exposure level
Illicit-service advertisement Unsolicited offers for gold, boosting, leveling, or other paid services Right-click and choose Report For: Spam; then block or ignore No click is safest; do not visit the advertised site
Phishing impersonation “Free” gold, mounts, pets, or account rewards; urgent requests to verify a password; links to an unfamiliar login page Do not open the link or reply. Use Report For: Spam and block the sender High if you entered credentials or downloaded anything
Bot or exploit activity Automated behavior, abnormal farming, or other cheating that is not simply an advertisement Use the Cheating report category Report what you observed without engaging
Possible account compromise Your password no longer works, characters or items changed, or your account is sending spam Change the password, scan the computer, and start Blizzard account recovery Critical; act before continuing to play

Keep the categories separate: Blizzard’s right-click guidance uses Spam for advertisements of illicit goods and services such as gold or leveling, while Cheating is intended for bots and exploit users.

Signs a gold seller or message is suspicious

Unsolicited gold and leveling advertisements

A stranger who opens a whisper, public chat, or mail with an unsolicited offer to sell gold, power-level a character, or provide another paid game service is advertising an illicit service. You do not need to negotiate, inspect the offer, or determine whether the seller is “legitimate.” Report the message as spam and stop contact.

Blizzard specifically describes the Spam report option as a way to report entities advertising illicit goods and services, including gold and leveling. The fact that a seller promises fast delivery, a discount, or positive “reviews” does not make the activity safe or authorized.

Rewards that require a login

Phishing messages often promise a pet, mount, free gold, game time, or another reward. The offer may imitate an event announcement, a customer-service notice, or a message from a guild member. A reward that requires you to sign in through a link in an unsolicited message is a warning sign, particularly when the page asks for a Battle.net email address, password, security answer, or payment details.

Threats, deadlines, and urgent verification

Another common pattern is punishment language: the sender claims your account will be banned, suspended, or deleted unless you “verify” it immediately. Blizzard identifies urgent password requests and links to account-management pages outside Blizzard’s sites as phishing indicators. Real enforcement notices should not be trusted merely because the message uses official-looking wording or a logo.

Urgency is designed to stop you from checking the destination, asking a guild officer, or opening Blizzard’s account tools directly. Close the conversation instead of trying to prove the sender wrong.

Off-site login pages and shortened destinations

A link can look plausible while leading to a copy of a login page. Do not enter credentials into a page reached from a whisper, mail, forum post, or advertisement. Do not “test” the page with an old password either; that still gives the attacker useful information.

If you need to manage your account, open Blizzard’s known account-management route yourself rather than following the message. Since a page can be compromised or redirected, the safest check is to avoid the supplied link entirely.

Names that imitate Blizzard

A character named “GM,” “Blizz,” “Blizzard,” or a similar variation is not proof of official status. Blizzard says a real Game Master contact has a special blue GM indicator and distinctive chat presentation. The name alone is easy for any player to copy.

Do not disclose information to a supposed GM who lacks those indicators, asks you to visit an external site, requests a password, or demands immediate action. Capture the relevant chat details if possible, report the contact, and end the conversation.

Suspicious in-game mail

Official Blizzard in-game mail displays a Blizzard logo. A message that imitates official mail but lacks that presentation, contains an unexpected link, or requests credentials should be treated as phishing. Use the Report Player option while the message is open, then delete it without opening attachments or visiting its destination.

How to tell a real Game Master contact from an impersonator

Look for the special blue GM indicator and Blizzard’s special chat presentation. Those visual signals matter more than the sender’s character name, guild, title, or claims about an investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A genuine-looking indicator still does not justify sharing a password or following an unrelated external link. Keep the interaction inside the game’s support process, and be cautious about any request that conflicts with Blizzard’s normal account-security practices. If the contact is a normal player using an official-sounding name, treat it as impersonation and report it.

How to report a suspicious gold seller in WoW

Before reporting

  1. Stop responding. Do not negotiate, insult, or warn the sender; continued conversation gives the account more opportunities to target you.
  2. Do not click links, download files, open unknown addons, or provide a password, authentication code, payment detail, or other account information.
  3. Leave the suspicious message visible long enough to identify the sender and the exact chat line or mail. Do not forward the content to friends for testing.

Report an advertisement or phishing message as Spam

  1. In the game client, right-click the sender’s character, name, or chat line.
  2. Choose the option labeled Report For: Spam.
  3. Submit the report. Blizzard says this forwards reports about illicit-goods advertisements and phishing to its staff and places the character on a temporary ignore.
  4. After submitting, block or ignore the sender if the client has not already done so.

Use this path for unsolicited gold or leveling advertisements and for phishing messages that impersonate Blizzard or promise rewards. Reporting first preserves the relevant context for the report; blocking alone does not classify the behavior for Blizzard’s review.

Report bots or exploit users as Cheating

If the issue is botting or exploit use rather than an advertisement, right-click the character or chat line and select the Cheating report category. Describe what you observed as accurately as possible. Do not label ordinary spam as cheating simply because you dislike the seller; Blizzard distinguishes the categories so reports can be routed appropriately.

When the in-game report option is unavailable

Blizzard’s right-click reporting guidance lists [email protected] for relevant details when the in-game option cannot be used. Include the character name, realm, approximate time, contact method, and what occurred. Do not send your password, authentication codes, or full payment information in an email report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do if you clicked the link

Your next step depends on what happened after the click. A click without credential entry is less severe than a downloaded file or a successful login, but you should still treat the event seriously.

You clicked but did not type anything

  • Close the page and do not return to it.
  • Do not download an offered “security tool,” addon, launcher, or browser extension.
  • Report the in-game contact as Spam and block it.
  • Review the device for unexpected downloads or newly installed software. If anything suspicious was saved or executed, follow the stronger steps below.

You entered a password or account details

  1. Change the Battle.net password immediately from a trusted device, not through the message’s link.
  2. If you used that password anywhere else, change those accounts too, beginning with the email account associated with Battle.net.
  3. Review the account for changed contact information, unfamiliar characters, missing items, or unexpected activity.
  4. Use Blizzard account-recovery support if you cannot sign in or if account information has been altered.

Do not wait for a visible loss. Attackers may use valid credentials later, and a compromised account can be used to send gold-selling spam to other players.

You downloaded or ran a file

Blizzard advises running a security scan when a suspicious addon or file may have infected the computer. Disconnect the affected device from sensitive account activity while scanning, remove or quarantine what the security tool identifies, and change passwords from a clean device. If the scan finds nothing, continue monitoring the account; a clean result does not prove that credentials were not captured.

You lost access or items

Start Blizzard’s account-recovery process as soon as access is lost. Blizzard explains that stolen accounts can be stripped of equipment and materials, used for botting, and used to send gold-selling advertisements. Tell support what changed, when you noticed it, and whether you clicked a link, ran a file, or shared credentials.

Why third-party gold sellers are a security risk

Blizzard warns that gold-selling and power-leveling services can promote account theft and exploitation. A seller may ask for credentials, install software, request remote access, or route a payment through a site designed to collect card data. Even when the initial transaction appears to work, the account can later be used for botting or spam, exposing you to additional disruption and enforcement.

Buying gold also creates a chain of trust you cannot verify: the seller may have obtained currency through compromised accounts, automation, stolen payment methods, or other prohibited activity. You cannot make that source safe by changing the character name, using a different payment method, or choosing a seller with a polished website.

The authorized alternative: WoW Token

Blizzard’s account-hacked guidance says players who want to exchange currency for in-game gold should consider the official WoW Token. It is an in-game option provided by Blizzard, unlike a third-party seller who asks you to leave Blizzard’s systems or disclose credentials.

Use the Token only through the official game interface and Blizzard account systems. Do not trust a whisper that claims to “sell” a Token through a separate website, trade window, or direct payment. The official option does not make unsolicited links or reward messages trustworthy.

Common scenarios and the correct response

“Buy cheap gold—pay through this site”

This is an unsolicited illicit-service advertisement. Do not open the site or reply. Use Report For: Spam, then block or ignore the sender.

“You won a mount; verify your account now”

This combines a reward promise with an off-site login request. Treat it as phishing. Report it as Spam, and if you clicked or entered information, follow the account-security steps for that exposure level.

“I am a Blizzard GM; give me your password or you will be banned”

A name is not proof of identity, and a password request is a major warning sign. Check for the genuine blue GM indicator and special chat presentation, but do not provide credentials. End the conversation and report the impersonator.

A character farms continuously and never responds

This may be bot or exploit activity rather than an advertisement. Use the Cheating category and describe the observable behavior. Do not follow the character, attempt to interfere with gameplay, or accuse other players publicly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An in-game mail resembles Blizzard mail but has no Blizzard logo

Keep the message open, choose Report Player, and avoid links or attachments. Delete it after reporting.

Preventive habits that reduce risk

  • Assume unsolicited offers are unsafe until independently verified through Blizzard’s own support or account interface.
  • Never use a link in a whisper, mail, advertisement, or “ban notice” to sign in.
  • Keep passwords private; Blizzard support does not need your password to identify your account.
  • Do not install an addon, launcher, or “verification tool” supplied by a stranger.
  • Use the game’s reporting tools instead of arguing with sellers or reposting their links.
  • Review account activity after any suspicious contact, especially if a device downloaded a file.
  • Use the official WoW Token when you want Blizzard-supported currency exchange, rather than a third-party seller.

A short checklist for stressful moments

  1. Stop: do not click, download, pay, or reply.
  2. Classify: advertisement or phishing is Spam; botting or exploit use is Cheating; signs of takeover require account recovery.
  3. Report: right-click the sender or chat line and select the matching category.
  4. Block: ignore or block the sender after reporting.
  5. Contain: change passwords and scan the computer if you clicked, ran a file, or entered information.
  6. Recover: contact Blizzard account-recovery support immediately if access or items are missing.

The practical rule is simple: a legitimate Blizzard interaction does not need a third-party login page, a stranger’s download, or your password. When a message combines money, urgency, and a request to leave the game, report it rather than trying to prove it genuine.
