What suspicious activity can look like
Suspicious activity is anything on your account or in a security message that you cannot connect to something you did. Common examples include:
Recommended Free Tools
- A purchase, cash transaction, fee, or other entry you do not recognize.
- An account alert about unusual activity that does not match your recent spending.
- A verification request or one-time code that you did not initiate.
- A notice that your contact details, password, device access, or other account information changed when you did not make the change.
- An email or text that urges immediate action through a link, or a website that imitates American Express.
An unfamiliar merchant name is not automatically fraud. Businesses sometimes bill under a parent company, payment processor, marketplace name, hotel group, or a different location from the one you remember. The account details still deserve a careful check, but do not treat a strange-looking descriptor alone as proof that an account was taken over. American Express does not present a universal checklist that identifies every legitimate merchant description, so use your own receipts, subscriptions, travel records, digital-wallet history, and household-card activity to determine whether you can explain the entry.

First, check the account without using the suspicious contact
Before clicking a link or calling a number supplied in an alert, open the American Express app from the device where you normally use it or type the official web address yourself. Sign in and compare the alert with the account activity shown there.
- Open the transaction or alert details. Note the date, amount, status, merchant information, and which Card or account is involved. A pending entry may look different from a completed transaction, and a transaction on an authorized additional Card may be unfamiliar to you.
- Compare it with your records. Check receipts, online orders, subscriptions, travel bookings, delivery services, and purchases made by other authorized users. Look for a matching amount that posted under a different business name.
- Check whether the security prompt matches an action you started. If you were signing in, adding a device, changing a profile detail, or making a payment, the request may be related to that activity. If you were not doing any of those things, treat the prompt as suspicious.
- Look for more than one unusual entry. Review recent activity rather than stopping at the first charge. A pattern of small transactions, unfamiliar logins, or repeated verification messages can be more informative than one descriptor.
- Do not test a questionable link. Close the message and navigate independently. A legitimate-looking logo, caller ID, or web address in a message is not proof that the contact came from American Express.
Take screenshots or write down dates and amounts for your own records, but do not email sensitive account information to an address found in an unsolicited message. You can provide relevant details through a trusted American Express channel.
Choose the correct reporting route
American Express separates suspected account fraud from phishing reports. Sending a phishing message to the fraud-support channel, or treating an unauthorized account transaction as only a spam report, can delay the help you need.
| What you found | Where to report it | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Unrecognized charge or other suspected account fraud | American Express support using the number on the back of your Card, or signed-in chat | Do not use a phone number or callback link supplied by the suspicious contact |
| Phishing email, text message, or fake American Express website | [email protected] | Do not click the message link, reply with account details, or enter credentials on the imitation site |
| Unsolicited request for account details or a verification code | End the contact and reach American Express through a trusted channel; use the phishing address as well if it came by email or text | Never disclose a code simply because the caller claims to be helping |
How to report an unfamiliar American Express transaction
For a US Card account, the Security Center lists 1-800-528-4800 for suspected fraud and offers contact through signed-in chat. The safest choice is still the number printed on your own Card, because contact details can vary by product and situation.
- Call from the Card itself or sign in to chat. If you call, use the number printed on the back of the affected Card. If you are already signed in to the official app or website, open the support or chat option there rather than following a message link.
- State that you are reporting suspected fraud. Identify the Card or account involved and explain why the activity is not recognized. Give the transaction date, amount, and merchant description as displayed in your account.
- Explain what you have already checked. Tell the representative whether you checked authorized-user spending, receipts, subscriptions, and pending activity. This helps separate a merchant-description question from a transaction you genuinely cannot identify.
- Ask what action is required for the specific transaction. American Express’s US Help Center groups charge disputes, fraud protection, PINs, and passwords under Security & Fraud. The representative can direct you to the applicable process for your account and transaction type; do not assume that every unfamiliar entry follows the same procedure.
- Record the case details. Keep the date and time of the contact, any reference number, and instructions you were given. Store them securely, not in the suspicious email or text thread.
American Express’s Security Center gives this instruction for callers in any location: “If you think you’ve been a victim of fraud, get in touch using the number on the back of your Card whether you are calling from the United States or overseas.” The wording is from the American Express US Security Center. If you are outside the United States, rely on the number on your own Card rather than assuming the US number applies.

How to report a phishing email, text, or fake site
Phishing is a deceptive message or website intended to make you reveal credentials, payment information, or a verification code. It can appear after a real purchase, during a travel disruption, or as a warning that your account will be closed. The message may contain branding and personal details copied from a data breach, but those details do not make it authentic.
- Do not click, call, reply, or sign in through the message. If you already opened a link, close it and do not enter additional information. If you entered a password, change it through the official American Express app or website and contact American Express through a trusted number.
- Preserve useful evidence without spreading it. Keep the original email or text, note the sender information and the web address, and capture a screenshot if it will help explain what happened. Do not forward the message to friends or colleagues.
- Send the report to the listed address. American Express directs reports of phishing emails, phishing texts, and fake American Express sites to [email protected]. Include the message and relevant context, but remove unrelated personal information that is not needed to identify the scam.
- Report account impact separately. If the message led to an unauthorized charge, a changed profile, or a compromised sign-in, also contact American Express support. The spoof-report mailbox is not a substitute for the account-fraud route.
Do not send your full Card number, password, Social Security number, or one-time code merely to prove that a message is fraudulent. American Express can tell you what information is needed through its authenticated support process.

A verification code is designed to confirm an action, not to identify you to an unsolicited caller. A fraudster may claim to be preventing a charge, reversing a transfer, or protecting your account and then ask you to read the code aloud. Giving the code can allow the person to complete the action that triggered it.
- If you did not initiate the sign-in, payment, profile change, or device enrollment, do not approve the request or share the code.
- End the call or close the chat, then open the official app or website yourself.
- Contact American Express using the number on the Card or authenticated chat and explain that an unsolicited contact requested a verification code.
- If the request arrived by email or text, report that message to [email protected] as phishing.
American Express’s identity-theft guidance warns against sharing account details or verification codes with an unsolicited contact. Its account-protection guidance for checking customers gives the same general warning about suspicious messages; the card-specific transaction report remains the American Express support route.
Secure access after you report the concern
Reporting an event and reducing the chance of another one are separate tasks. After contacting American Express, review the account-security settings that are available to you.

Keep profile contact details current
American Express says fraud alerts are automatic when it detects unusual account activity. Check the phone number and email address in your Card Profile so alerts can reach you. Remove an old address or number you no longer control, and be cautious if a caller asks you to change those details during an unsolicited conversation.
Review saved devices
Open the account’s device or security-management area and examine the devices linked to the account. Remove any phone, tablet, or computer that is lost, stolen, shared, or no longer used. If a device name is unfamiliar, do not leave it active while you investigate; contact American Express through a trusted channel if you cannot remove it or are unsure whether it belongs to you.
Use available app protections
The American Express Security Center lists several app-security measures: add the device to the account when prompted by the official app, enable notifications, and use biometric sign-in where available on your device. These controls can make an unexpected sign-in or account event easier to notice, but they do not make it safe to disclose a verification code to a caller.
Protect the email account tied to American Express
Your email inbox may be used to reset accounts or intercept alerts. Sign in to your email provider directly, review recent sign-ins and forwarding rules, and change the email password if you suspect it was exposed. Use a unique password and the provider’s own multifactor-authentication option. Do not make these changes through a link in the suspicious message.

- The Card or account involved, identified only through the secure call or chat process.
- The transaction date, amount, currency if shown, and merchant description.
- Whether the entry is pending or completed and whether other authorized users could have made it.
- The date and wording of any alert, email, text, or verification prompt.
- Whether you clicked a link, entered credentials, shared a code, or installed anything after receiving the contact.
- Any screenshots, sender addresses, phone numbers, or web addresses that explain the phishing attempt.
Give full credentials only when an authenticated American Express process requests information in the normal way. A person who contacted you first is not authenticated merely because they know your name, the last four digits of a Card, or a recent transaction amount.
Common mistakes that make a suspicious event worse
Calling the number in the message
Scammers can route a callback to someone pretending to be support. End the contact and use the number on the Card or signed-in chat instead.
Clicking a second link to “cancel” the first action
A follow-up link can be another attempt to collect credentials. Navigate independently through the official app or website.
Assuming a code is harmless
Verification codes can authorize an action. If you did not start the action, do not read the code to anyone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReporting only the message when money is involved
The phishing mailbox helps identify deceptive messages, but an unfamiliar transaction still requires direct contact with American Express support.

When to use the American Express Security & Fraud Help Center
The American Express Security & Fraud FAQ & Help Center organizes guidance for charge disputes, PINs, passwords, and fraud protection. Use it to find the topic that matches your situation, but do not let a general FAQ replace contacting American Express when you see an account event you cannot explain.
Account type matters. The contact process for a US Card may differ from a checking, business, corporate, or non-US account. If the product’s own materials or the number on the back of the Card differ from a general webpage, follow the product-specific instructions. When calling from overseas, use the international number printed on the Card.
A practical decision checklist
- Recognize an account entry you cannot explain: inspect its details and your records, then contact American Express through the Card number or signed-in chat.
- Receive a suspicious email, text, or fake-site link: do not interact with it; report it to [email protected].
- Receive an unexpected code request: do not share or approve the code; independently contact American Express.
- Suspect that credentials were exposed: sign in independently, change affected passwords, and tell American Express what information you entered.
- Finish the review: confirm profile contact details, inspect saved devices, remove devices you do not trust, and enable available notifications and biometrics.
The essential rule is simple: use the Card’s printed number or an authenticated American Express session for account problems, and use the dedicated spoof-report address for phishing. Treat every unsolicited request for account information or a verification code as untrusted until you have verified it through one of those independent channels.
