How to Spot and Report Identity Theft on Your Credit Report

An unfamiliar account or inquiry on your credit report deserves a prompt check, but it is not proof by itself that someone stole your identity. Get reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, record the entries you cannot identify, report suspected theft at IdentityTheft.gov, and contact both the business and every bureau showing the item. Keep copies of reports and correspondence as you work through the case.

How do I know if there’s identity theft on my credit report?

Look for accounts you did not open, unfamiliar balances or opening dates, and credit inquiries you do not recognize. Check all three nationwide credit bureaus: an item may appear on one report but not the others. You can get free weekly reports through AnnualCreditReport.com, according to the FTC’s recovery guidance.

  1. Request your reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion through AnnualCreditReport.com.
  2. Review account names, opening dates, balances, inquiries, and other entries.
  3. For each unfamiliar item, note which bureau’s report shows it and save a copy of that report with the date you retrieved it.

An unfamiliar creditor name may belong to a company you recognize under a different name, and a report entry can also be an ordinary reporting error. Check those possibilities, but treat a plausible account you did not open as urgent.

What should I do if I see an account I didn’t open?

Secure the account and contact the company reporting it. A report to the FTC or a request to a bureau does not, by itself, close the creditor account or stop activity on it.

  4. Record the date, department or representative, case number, and outcome of each contact. Keep copies of letters and delivery confirmations.

How do I report identity theft to the FTC?

Report suspected identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov, or call the identity-theft helpline listed there. The FTC uses the details you provide to create an FTC Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. Give accurate information, then save or print both documents for use with businesses and credit bureaus. If you do not create an account on the site, save the documents before leaving the page.

A local police report can be useful in some cases or requested by a business, but it is not a universal requirement. IdentityTheft.gov advises bringing the FTC report, photo identification, proof of address, and other relevant evidence if you file locally.

Guard Your ID Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp, 3-Pack for Mail | Pre-inked, 1,000 impressions per roller, covers 3 lines per pass, works on paper, envelopes, prescription labels, twist cap
  • WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
  • HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
  • DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
  • IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
  • SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.

How do I report a fraudulent account to the credit bureaus?

Contact each bureau whose report contains the fraudulent information. For information caused by identity theft, ask the bureau to block the specific entry under the Fair Credit Reporting Act’s identity-theft process. Identify the creditor and account or entry precisely, and include proof of identity and a copy of your FTC Identity Theft Report. Follow the bureau’s current submission instructions; the FTC explains the process and provides a sample bureau letter.

The FTC sample letter describes a four-business-day period for blocking qualifying identity-theft information under section 605B. That is a statutory process, not a guarantee that an incomplete or ineligible request will be accepted. Use the official instructions and keep a copy of everything submitted.

If an entry is inaccurate but you cannot establish that it resulted from identity theft, you can file a regular dispute instead. The FTC’s credit bureau guidance explains that bureaus must investigate disputes and amend a report when the consumer is right. A dispute and an identity-theft block are related but separate processes.

Should I put a fraud alert or freeze on my credit?

An alert asks prospective creditors to take additional identity-verification steps; a freeze restricts access to your credit report for new-credit applications until it is lifted or removed. You can use the FTC’s current fraud alert and freeze guidance to find each bureau’s setup process.

The steps above address the general credit-report case. Tax, medical, child, telephone, utility, and other forms of identity theft may require additional actions beyond contacting credit bureaus.
