Check the full sender address and link destinations without opening them, verify any account or billing claim by visiting the company independently, and report a suspicious message through your email provider’s phishing control. If you already shared information, secure the affected account promptly.
How to tell whether an AI-company email is phishing
Start with the sender details, not the display name. Expand the sender information and inspect the complete email address and domain. Watch for misspellings, unexpected subdomains, or a domain that does not match the one you have independently verified for the service. A matching-looking address is a clue, not proof of legitimacy: sender details can be misleading, so assess the message and verify important claims separately.

Check where links lead without following them. Use your email app’s safe link preview or hover over a link on a computer; do not click it to investigate. Be cautious if the visible text and destination differ, the URL is shortened or unfamiliar, or the destination does not match the company’s verified domain. The FTC recommends checking the actual sender address and link destination, and notes that scammers can spoof logos and invent addresses (FTC: How to Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams).
Look for the request and the circumstances around it. An unexpected password or payment request, an account or billing warning you did not expect, pressure to act immediately, or an attachment you were not expecting should prompt caution. Poor grammar is not a reliable test: archived CISA guidance warns that AI-generated phishing messages can be polished, so verify the sender and claim rather than relying on writing quality (CISA: Recognize and Report Phishing).

- A familiar logo or display name does not authenticate a message.
- A sender-domain check alone does not prove the message is safe.
- Never enter a password or financial details through a link in an unexpected email.
How to verify an account or billing claim safely
If a message says your account, subscription, payment, or security status needs attention, open a new browser window or app and go to the service using an address you already know or find independently on its verified official site. Check the account there. If you need help, use contact details from that site—not a phone number, web address, or sign-in link in the questionable message. Do not reply to ask whether the email is real.
It is possible for a legitimate company email to be unexpected, so do not assume every message is fraudulent. Independent verification lets you check the claim without trusting the message’s own links or contact details (FTC phishing guidance).

How to report a suspicious phishing email
Report it to your email provider
- Do not click links, open attachments, reply, or use the email’s unsubscribe link.
- Use your email service’s built-in “Report phishing” or equivalent control. This gives the provider a way to assess the message.
- After reporting, delete the email. If you are unsure where the control is, consult your email provider’s official help pages.
Use US consumer reporting channels
For readers in the United States, the FTC advises forwarding phishing emails to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at [email protected] and reporting the attempt at ReportFraud.ftc.gov (FTC consumer guidance). These are reporting routes, not a promise of an individual response or account resolution. Readers elsewhere should check their country’s official consumer-protection or cybercrime reporting guidance.
Notify the impersonated company when appropriate
If a company’s identity is being misused, the FTC advises notifying that company through contact information obtained independently from its verified website (FTC business guidance on phishing). For suspected OpenAI account fraud or unauthorized account activity, OpenAI directs users to its Fraudulent Activity webform: select “Report unauthorized activity involving my account.” That form is for suspected account-related fraud or unauthorized activity; it is not specified as the reporting route for every spoof email you have not interacted with.

Use workplace reporting for work messages
If the email reached a work account or you may have interacted with it at work, follow your employer’s incident-reporting procedure and notify its IT or security contact promptly. Organizations should use their established reporting controls and response channels rather than treating consumer reporting routes as a substitute. Joint guidance from CISA, NSA, FBI, and MS-ISAC discusses organizational phishing reporting and response (Joint cybersecurity advisory AA23-059A).

If you entered a password
- Go to the real service independently and change the exposed password. If you reused it elsewhere, change it on those accounts too.
- For an OpenAI account, OpenAI advises changing your password and logging out of all sessions if you suspect account fraud. If an API key may have been exposed, rotate it. Report suspected unauthorized activity through the Fraudulent Activity webform (OpenAI account-fraud guidance).
- Tell your workplace IT or security contact promptly if a work account or device may be affected.
If you shared personal or financial information
US readers can use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps tailored to the information exposed, as recommended in FTC consumer guidance (FTC phishing guidance).

FTC guidance recommends updating existing security software and scanning the device. If the device belongs to your employer, contact its IT or security team and follow its incident process rather than handling a suspected workplace compromise alone (FTC phishing guidance; joint federal advisory).
