A Solana sandwich attack happens when a searcher places a trade immediately before your swap and another immediately after it. The first trade moves the token price against you, your swap executes at a worse rate, and the second trade captures the difference. You can reduce the risk by using the tightest practical slippage limit, checking what any interface’s MEV protection actually guarantees, and—when your application supports it—submitting a correctly integrated Jito DontFront transaction. None of these measures is a universal guarantee.

What a sandwich attack does to your Solana swap

Sandwiching is a transaction-ordering strategy. The attacker watches for a pending swap, then tries to place two of its own transactions around yours:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Front-run: the searcher buys the token before your swap, increasing demand and moving the pool price.
  2. Victim swap: your transaction executes after that price movement, so you receive fewer tokens or pay more of the input asset than your quote implied.
  3. Back-run: the searcher sells after your swap, unwinding the position and keeping the price difference, less fees and trading costs.

In a Jito bundle, the ordering can be represented as [frontrun_tx, your_tx, backrun_tx]. The attacker is not stealing your wallet keys. It is exploiting the price movement and the execution range your transaction allows.

Slippage is the attacker’s room to maneuver

Your quoted output is based on the pool state when the interface builds the transaction. By the time the transaction executes, the pool may have changed because of normal trading, your own order’s price impact, or another trader’s transaction. The slippage limit defines how far execution may move from the quoted result before the transaction is rejected.

A generous limit gives a sandwich searcher more room to move the price and still have your swap succeed. A very tight limit removes that room, but it can also reject a legitimate trade when the market is volatile, the pool is thin, or several transactions arrive first. A failed swap is therefore not proof that someone attacked you.

Why Solana can still be sandwiched

Solana does not use the same shared public mempool model associated with some other chains. Transactions are forwarded toward the upcoming block leader, which reduces some opportunities for arbitrary observers to see and reorder every pending transaction. That design reduces exposure; it does not make sandwiching impossible.

Searchers can operate optimized infrastructure, monitor transaction flow, and maintain direct connections to validators or block-building services. If they can observe a transaction early enough and influence its position, they may still attempt the before-and-after sequence. Treat “Solana has no public mempool” as a risk reduction, not an immunity claim.

How to spot a possible sandwich

No single on-chain clue proves intent. Use several observations together and distinguish a probable sandwich from ordinary price impact, volatility, or a failed transaction.

Before signing: inspect the trade you are about to send

  • Record the quoted input, expected output, route, and minimum received amount shown by the interface.
  • Read the slippage setting rather than accepting a high default. Confirm whether it is expressed as a percentage, a token amount, or a minimum-output value.
  • Check whether the route crosses several pools or uses a thin-liquidity market. More hops and shallow liquidity can create larger normal price changes.
  • Look for warnings about price impact, route changes, or an expired quote. These are not sandwich evidence, but they tell you that execution is already sensitive.
  • Confirm the transaction’s destination programs and token mint addresses before signing. A protection feature cannot compensate for signing the wrong transaction.

After confirmation: compare the surrounding activity

Save your transaction signature and inspect it in a Solana explorer that displays account balances, instruction order, token transfers, and the slot in which it landed. Compare the pool state immediately before and after your swap.

Possible warning signs include:

  • A buy of the same token in the same pool immediately before your transaction, followed by a sell from the same or linked searcher accounts immediately afterward.
  • Your execution landing close to the worst price permitted by the slippage limit while the pool price briefly moves in the opposite direction.
  • Two trades with similar size or matching token direction that bracket your transaction in the same slot or adjacent slots.
  • A route or output materially worse than the quote even though there was no broad market move visible on other venues.

These patterns are indicators, not a quantified detection method. A large legitimate trade, arbitrage, a rebalance, or a volatile market can produce similar ordering. Do not infer an attack from one unfavorable fill alone.

Separate a failed swap from an executed sandwich

If your transaction fails because the minimum-output condition was not met, the swap did not complete at that price. You may still pay a network fee, depending on how the transaction failed, but there is no completed victim trade for a searcher to profit from. Retry only after checking the reason, updating the quote, and deciding whether the trade still makes sense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set slippage as tightly as the trade allows

The most broadly available defense is to reduce the maximum price movement your transaction accepts. Use the smallest tolerance that still accommodates expected market movement and the route’s normal execution variance.

A practical slippage-setting procedure

  1. Start with the live quote. Note the expected output, price-impact warning, route, and quote age.
  2. Open the advanced or transaction-settings panel. Find the control labeled Slippage, Slippage tolerance, Minimum received, or an equivalent term.
  3. Replace an automatic or unusually wide value. Choose a limit appropriate to the token’s liquidity and current volatility rather than copying a setting from a different market.
  4. Recalculate the minimum output. Verify that the displayed minimum received still represents an acceptable trade. If it does not, cancel rather than widening the limit reflexively.
  5. Send once and monitor the result. If the transaction fails, treat that as an execution condition to investigate—not as confirmation of an attack.

For a deep, stable market, a narrow tolerance may be practical. For a small pool or rapidly moving token, the same tolerance may cause repeated failures. The correct setting is a risk decision: you are trading execution certainty against the amount of adverse movement you are willing to accept.

Why an extremely low setting is not automatically safer

A limit below normal quote noise can make a transaction fail during ordinary activity. Repeated retries can then expose a new quote each time and increase operational mistakes. A failed transaction also does not refund time spent, and it may still incur a network fee. Tighten slippage enough to constrain extraction, but leave a range that matches the market you are actually trading.

Evaluate interface and wallet protection claims

Some wallets and swap interfaces may advertise MEV protection, private routing, or protected execution. Availability and behavior can change, and consumer support is not established by the technical documentation discussed here. Before relying on a switch, open the provider’s current documentation and answer five questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Where is the transaction sent? Is it submitted through a private relay, a specific block engine, or an ordinary RPC endpoint?
  • What ordering condition is enforced? Does the service prevent another transaction from preceding yours, or does it merely try to reduce public visibility?
  • Which routes are covered? Protection may apply only to certain aggregators, pools, transaction types, regions, or account modes.
  • What happens when protection is unavailable? Determine whether the interface falls back to ordinary submission without a clear warning.
  • What is the failure and fee behavior? Read whether protected submission can expire, be rejected, or incur additional tips or priority fees.

Do not treat a shield icon, a “private” label, or a higher quoted fee as a guarantee unless the provider states the exact mechanism and scope.

What Jito DontFront does—and what it does not do

DontFront is an integration mechanism described in Solana’s developer documentation, not a universal consumer-wallet button. It constrains bundle ordering when a transaction is correctly constructed and submitted through the Jito block engine.

How the marker is added

The transaction includes a valid public key beginning with jitodontfront as a read-only, non-signer account in an instruction. The marker identifies the transaction for the block engine’s ordering rule; it does not authorize spending and is not a secret key.

How submission changes the ordering rule

When a protected transaction is sent through the block engine’s sendTransaction path, the engine will not allow another transaction to be placed before it in a bundle. When it is sent through sendBundle, the protected transaction must be at index zero; otherwise, the bundle is rejected. The technical description is documented at Solana’s MEV Protection with Jito DontFront guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What an application must do

  1. Construct the swap transaction and include the valid DontFront public key as a read-only, non-signer account in an instruction.
  2. Submit that transaction to the Jito block engine rather than an unrelated ordinary RPC path.
  3. Use the appropriate submission method and respect the ordering rule: a protected transaction cannot be preceded in sendTransaction, and it must occupy position zero in a sendBundle bundle.
  4. Handle expiration, rejection, confirmation, and fallback explicitly. If the protected path fails and the application resubmits through an unprotected path, the ordering guarantee no longer applies.

DontFront constrains the block engine’s bundle ordering when these conditions are met. It does not make every Solana transaction private, does not guarantee a favorable price, and does not protect a transaction sent through an ordinary route that omits the marker or bypasses the block engine.

Priority fees and tips: useful for landing, not a sandwich shield

During congestion, a priority fee can improve the chance that a validator processes your transaction promptly. Jito tips are a separate mechanism discussed in Jito’s low-latency transaction documentation; they participate in the block engine’s auction and are distinct from Solana priority fees. Details are documented at Jito’s Low Latency Transaction Send documentation.

Faster or more reliable landing can change which transactions your swap meets, but paying more does not by itself prevent a searcher from observing and ordering around it. A higher fee can also increase your cost without improving execution quality. Use fees to address inclusion and timing, and use slippage controls or an explicitly documented ordering mechanism to address sandwich risk.

Compare the main defenses

Measure User effort Ordering protection Route and interface support Cost or trade-off Failure risk
Tight slippage Low; available in many swap interfaces None; it limits the price at which your swap may execute Usually broad, because it is part of transaction parameters May reduce the attacker’s extraction room Higher chance of rejection when markets move or liquidity is thin
Documented interface MEV protection Low to moderate; depends on the provider Varies; read the provider’s exact guarantee May cover only selected routes, pools, or transaction types Possible additional fee, tip, delay, or fallback behavior Protection may be unavailable or bypassed if the interface falls back
Jito DontFront integration High; generally requires application-level transaction construction and block-engine submission Constrains placement before the protected transaction under the documented rules Requires compatible software and Jito block-engine routing Possible block-engine tip or other landing cost; implementation complexity Transaction can be rejected, expire, or lose protection if sent through an unprotected path
Priority fee or Jito tip alone Low to moderate No standalone anti-sandwich guarantee Depends on the submission path Increases transaction or auction cost Does not address adverse ordering by itself

A safer Solana swap workflow

  1. Choose the market carefully. Confirm the token mint, pool liquidity, route, and current price-impact warning.
  2. Set a deliberate slippage limit. Tighten the default, then verify the minimum output and whether the trade remains acceptable.
  3. Check protection documentation. If the interface claims MEV protection, identify its route, guarantee, coverage, fallback, and fee behavior before signing.
  4. Use an integrated protected path when available. For an application supporting DontFront, confirm that the marker is included and the transaction is sent through the Jito block engine under the correct submission rule.
  5. Use fees for their intended purpose. Add priority fees or Jito tips only when their landing benefit justifies the cost; do not interpret them as an ordering guarantee.
  6. Review the confirmation. Save the signature, compare actual output with the quote, and inspect surrounding transactions if the result is unexpectedly poor.
  7. Stop when the economics no longer work. Do not keep widening slippage or repeatedly retrying solely to force a trade through.

If you think you were sandwiched

  1. Record the transaction signature, quoted output, actual output, slippage setting, route, and time.
  2. Check whether the swap succeeded, partially executed, or failed its minimum-output condition.
  3. Inspect the same pool for transactions immediately before and after yours, noting token direction, account relationships, and slot placement.
  4. Compare the pool’s movement with broader market prices to distinguish a local ordering event from a market-wide move.
  5. Contact the interface or application with the signature and route details if its documentation promises protected execution. Ask whether the protected path was actually used or whether the transaction fell back.
  6. For the next attempt, reduce slippage to a practical level, consider a deeper-liquidity route, and use a documented protected submission path if your software supports one.

Limits you should plan for

There is no single setting that makes every Solana swap safe from harmful ordering. Tight slippage can stop execution; a private or protected route may cover only certain transactions; DontFront requires correct application integration and block-engine submission; and fees influence landing rather than guaranteeing protection. Ordinary RPC access should not be described as an anti-sandwich service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because endpoints, fee practices, DontFront behavior, and consumer interface features can change, verify the current technical documentation immediately before relying on a protection claim. The durable strategy is layered: keep the accepted price range narrow enough for the market, understand the route that will carry the transaction, and confirm what ordering rule—if any—the submission service actually enforces.
