How to Spot and Avoid Romance Scams on Dating Apps

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

The safest rule is simple: never send money or gifts to a romantic interest you have not met in person. Romance scammers commonly create a false identity, build trust through frequent and intimate conversations, then ask for emergency funds, travel costs, gift cards, cryptocurrency, investments or other payments. Repeatedly avoiding an in-person meeting, moving the conversation off the dating app quickly, demanding secrecy and applying financial pressure are especially serious when they occur together.

You can reduce the risk by slowing the relationship down, checking claims independently, discussing concerns with someone you trust and refusing every payment request. If you suspect fraud, stop communicating, report the account and contact the bank or payment company immediately if money was sent.

What a romance scam looks like

A romance scam is fraud disguised as a relationship. The person may use a stolen photograph, invented name, false occupation or fabricated life story. After establishing emotional closeness over repeated messages or calls, the scammer introduces a problem that supposedly requires your help.

The story may involve military service, work overseas, a medical emergency, an expensive trip, a lost wallet or a delayed paycheck. Some scammers instead present themselves as successful investors and offer to guide you into cryptocurrency or stock-market trading. The specific story changes, but the pattern is consistent: trust is built first, then money or valuable personal information is requested.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation also warns that offenders may try to move conversations from a legitimate dating platform to email, text messaging or an encrypted service. They can use the new channel to reduce the platform’s visibility and make it easier to pressure or isolate you. Moving to another app is not proof of fraud by itself; it becomes more concerning alongside secrecy, pressure, avoidance and financial requests.

Warning signs to evaluate as a pattern

No single behavior proves that a match is fraudulent. A person may be shy, live far away, travel for work or prefer another messaging service for ordinary reasons. Look at the combination of behavior and what happens when you set a reasonable boundary.

A profile that cannot be independently confirmed

  • The person’s name, job, location, age or life history changes or conflicts across conversations.
  • The profile uses unusually polished or generic language and provides few verifiable details.
  • A reverse image search shows the photograph under another name or attached to unrelated profiles.
  • Searches for the person’s occupation or story alongside the word “scammer” reveal similar complaints or copied narratives.

These checks produce clues, not identity verification. A clean search does not prove that someone is genuine, and a photograph match does not establish who is currently using the account.

Repeated excuses for not meeting

Romance scammers often maintain an online-only relationship while giving changing reasons they cannot meet in person. They may cancel repeatedly, claim an unexpected deployment, describe a work assignment abroad or promise a meeting after a payment clears. One cancelled plan is normal; a continuing pattern of avoidance, especially after weeks of intense contact, deserves caution.

Fast emotional intensity

Watch for declarations of love, constant attention or claims that you are uniquely understood before you have met. Strong feelings can develop online, but rapid intensity can make it harder to question inconsistencies. A trustworthy match should tolerate a slower pace and your need to verify information.

Pressure to leave the dating app

A request to exchange phone numbers or use another app is not automatically suspicious. Treat it as a warning sign when it happens very early, is accompanied by requests to keep the relationship secret, or is followed by pressure to install unfamiliar software, send money or share sensitive details.

Isolation from people who care about you

The FBI’s Philadelphia warning identifies attempts to separate a potential victim from friends and family. A match may insist that others are jealous, say they do not understand your relationship, or demand that you keep conversations and payments private. Healthy relationships do not require cutting off independent advice.

Requests for money or valuables

Common requests include emergency medical bills, airfare, customs charges, rent, legal fees, military leave, gift cards, wire transfers, payment-app transfers and cryptocurrency. An apparent investment opportunity is still a financial request when the person you met online directs you to buy or transfer assets.

FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs stated: “Requests for money, cryptocurrency, or your personal information are clear warning signs of a scam, not a legitimate relationship.” Treat a request for your Social Security number, account credentials, identity documents or other sensitive information with the same seriousness as a request for cash.

When several signs appear together

Risk rises when the same person is simultaneously unavailable for a safe meeting, pushing you onto a private channel, insisting that nobody else knows about the relationship and presenting an urgent financial problem. The individual signs have innocent explanations in isolation, but their combination removes the normal safeguards of a new relationship. Pay attention to the response when you slow down or say no. Respect for a boundary is reassuring; guilt, anger, threats, repeated persuasion or a new emergency are reasons to end contact.

Questions to ask yourself before trust deepens

  • Have I met this person in person, or am I relying entirely on messages, calls and photographs?
  • Can I independently confirm the person’s name, work, location and other important claims?
  • Has the person followed through on realistic plans, or do cancellations keep accumulating?
  • Would I make the same financial decision if a trusted friend were sitting beside me?
  • Am I being asked to hide the relationship, payment or investment from people who know me?
  • Is the person asking for ordinary conversation, or for a transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, investment or account access?

How to distinguish an ordinary match from a dangerous pattern

Situation What to examine Safer response
Meeting plans Does the person make realistic plans and follow through, or repeatedly cancel and supply new excuses? Keep the relationship uncommitted until conduct is consistent and an in-person meeting is possible in a safe setting.
Communication channel Are you moving off-platform by mutual convenience, or are you being pushed to leave immediately and keep the contact hidden? Keep communicating through the dating service while you evaluate the profile and preserve records.
Personal boundaries Does the person respect “no,” or respond with guilt, anger, urgency or threats to end the relationship? Stop any conversation that turns a boundary into a negotiation.
Story and evidence Do names, dates, locations and work details remain consistent with public information? Check details independently and treat contradictions as reasons to pause, not as a challenge to solve for the person.
Financial conduct Is there an ordinary conversation, or a request for a transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, investment or account access? Do not pay, buy assets, open an account for the person or relay funds.

An online-only relationship combined with pressure for money is a decisive reason not to pay, even if you still hope the person is genuine.

What to do before sending money or sensitive information

  1. Set the rule before an emergency occurs. Decide that you will not send money or gifts to a romantic interest you have not met in person. This removes the need to make a high-pressure judgment when a story is designed to trigger sympathy.
  2. Pause every urgent request. Do not respond by sending a “small” amount, buying a gift card or promising help later. Urgency and secrecy are tools for preventing outside review.
  3. Tell a trusted person the complete story. Share the messages, profile details and requested payment with a friend or relative who is not emotionally involved. Ask them to challenge the explanation rather than reassure you.
  4. Check the story independently. Search the person’s job, claimed organization or unusual explanation together with “scammer.” Look for repeated wording, copied biographies and reports involving the same photograph or account name.
  5. Reverse-search the profile photograph. Compare the names, locations and dates attached to other uses of the image. A conflict is a warning sign, but search results alone cannot prove the current user’s identity.
  6. Refuse financial instructions. Do not wire funds, use a payment app, purchase gift cards, transfer cryptocurrency or follow an online romantic interest’s investment directions.
  7. Protect account and identity information. Do not share passwords, one-time verification codes, bank-login details, identity documents or other information that could be used to access accounts or impersonate you.

These checks are most useful before any payment. Once money has been sent, recovery may be difficult, so do not wait for an in-person meeting or a promised repayment to decide whether to act.

If you suspect the profile is fraudulent

  1. Stop contact. Do not argue, warn the person that you have reported them or send additional money to “unlock” a refund. Save relevant messages, usernames, email addresses, phone numbers and payment records before blocking the account.
  2. Report the dating profile. Use the service’s report function and include the behavior that concerned you, such as repeated payment requests, impersonation, threats or attempts to move you off-platform.
  3. Report the fraud to the Federal Trade Commission. Submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Provide dates, contact details, payment information and copies of messages when the form allows.
  4. Tell people who may be targeted next. If the scammer used a public profile or approached your friends, explain the warning signs without reposting private information that could expose you or another victim.

Reporting does not guarantee that an account will be removed or that money will be recovered, but it gives the platform and authorities information about connected activity.

If you already sent money

Contact the bank or payment company used for the transaction as soon as possible. Say that the payment was made as part of fraud and ask whether it can be stopped, reversed or recovered. The provider may have a time-sensitive process, but recovery is not assured. Keep the transaction reference, recipient details, screenshots and all correspondence for the provider and investigators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bank transfer or wire: Contact the bank or wire service’s fraud department immediately and ask about a recall or reversal.
  • Payment application: Report the transaction through the app and contact the linked bank or card issuer.
  • Gift card: Contact the gift-card issuer, retain the card and receipt, and provide the redemption details.
  • Cryptocurrency: Contact the exchange or service used to send the funds and preserve the wallet address, transaction hash and messages. Cryptocurrency transfers may be difficult or impossible to reverse.

Do not pay anyone who later promises guaranteed recovery in exchange for an upfront fee. A second request for money can be another part of the fraud.

If the person asked you to install software

Some romance scams include instructions to download software or give remote access to a computer. If you installed a program at the person’s direction, the FBI San Antonio guidance says to disconnect the computer from the internet and shut it down, then report the incident to law enforcement.

After disconnecting, use a different trusted device to change important passwords and contact financial institutions if account access may have been exposed. Do not reconnect the affected computer simply to continue the conversation or “prove” what happened.

How friends and relatives can help

People caught in a romance scam may feel embarrassed, defensive or convinced that the relationship is real. A confrontation that mocks the relationship can drive the person toward the scammer and away from help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Start with concern: explain the specific behavior you observed rather than labeling the person foolish.
  • Ask to review the story together, including meeting history, payment requests and changes in identity details.
  • Offer to call the bank or payment provider with them and sit nearby while they report the profile.
  • Focus on a temporary pause: no payments, no gift cards, no cryptocurrency and no sharing of account information while facts are checked.
  • If there are threats, blackmail or immediate danger, involve appropriate emergency or law-enforcement services.

When someone has already paid, support practical action first. Recovering funds is uncertain, but quick contact with the provider can preserve options.

What the reported losses show—and what they do not

The FBI’s San Antonio division said local victims reported more than $28 million in confidence and romance scam losses in 2025, compared with $15.8 million in 2024. Those figures come from complaints to the Internet Crime Complaint Center and describe reported losses in that FBI division, not a national total. They also do not measure every incident, because many victims do not report or do not know where to report.

U.S. reporting and international readers

The reporting steps above are based on U.S. Federal Trade Commission and FBI guidance. Readers in other countries should use their local consumer-protection agency, police or cybercrime reporting service, and contact the bank or payment provider that handled the transaction. Payment-reversal procedures and reporting addresses vary by country and can change, so use the current instructions from the relevant authority.

FBI Philadelphia Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs also advises: “Don’t just follow your heart—trust your gut when seeking companionship online.” A cautious pause, independent advice and a firm refusal to pay are appropriate whenever the relationship depends on secrecy, cannot progress to a safe meeting and includes a financial demand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is moving a conversation off a dating app proof that someone is a scammer?

No. People may switch to texting or another service for ordinary reasons. It becomes a serious warning sign when the move happens very quickly or is paired with secrecy, isolation, avoidance of meeting, pressure to install software or a request for money or personal information.

What should I do if the person asks for only a small amount?

Do not send it. A small payment can be the start of larger requests, and urgency is meant to prevent you from checking the story. Pause, show the messages to someone you trust and refuse wires, payment-app transfers, gift cards, cryptocurrency and investment instructions.

Can a reverse image search confirm that a match is genuine?

No. It can reveal that a photograph appears under another name or on unrelated profiles, which is useful evidence of a problem. A clean result does not prove identity, and a matching photograph does not prove who controls the account.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t a new love interest meet in person?

Distance, military service, overseas work or another commitment can be genuine. Repeated cancellations, changing explanations and promises that a meeting will happen after you pay are dangerous patterns. Do not treat an online-only relationship as established enough to justify sending money.

Can I recover money sent to a romance scammer?

Possibly, but recovery is not assured. Contact the bank, wire service, payment app, card issuer, gift-card company or cryptocurrency exchange used for the payment immediately. Tell them it was fraud and ask whether the transaction can be stopped, reversed or recovered. Keep all references and records.

Should I keep talking to gather evidence?

No. Preserve messages, usernames, contact details and payment records, then stop communicating and block the account. Do not warn the person, negotiate a refund or send more money to obtain additional proof.

What if a friend insists the relationship is real?

Avoid ridicule and focus on specific behavior: inability to meet, inconsistent details, secrecy, isolation or financial requests. Offer to review the story together, pause all payments and contact the provider or reporting service with them. Independent advice can be more effective than a confrontation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the person asked me to install software?

If you installed it, disconnect the computer from the internet and shut it down, following FBI San Antonio guidance, then report the incident to law enforcement. Use another trusted device to address exposed accounts and do not reconnect the affected computer to continue the conversation.

Are cryptocurrency or stock-investment offers from a dating match safe?

Treat them as financial requests and a major warning sign. Do not buy, transfer or invest assets at the person’s direction, open an account for them or relay funds. A romantic relationship does not make an investment instruction trustworthy.

The Bottom Line

Never pay or send gifts to an online romantic interest you have not met in person. Slow down, verify claims independently, consult someone you trust and treat secrecy, repeated meeting excuses and financial pressure as a dangerous combination. If you suspect fraud, preserve records, stop contact, report the profile and contact the payment provider immediately if money was sent.
