How to Spot an AI-Generated Deepfake Investment Pitch

A convincing face or voice cannot prove an investment pitch is genuine. Treat media glitches as reasons to pause—not as a dependable way to authenticate a person. Before sending money or personal information, verify the person through a trusted channel you find independently, check the relevant professional and firm records, and evaluate the investment itself.

The registration checks below are for U.S. investment advisers and brokers. If you are elsewhere, use your country’s official financial regulator and fraud-reporting channels.

What does a deepfake investment pitch look like?

A deepfake is audio or video altered or generated with AI to imitate a real person. A scammer might use a celebrity or company executive’s apparent endorsement to promote an exclusive opportunity, promise guaranteed returns, or create pressure to act quickly. A polished site linked from the video may be built to collect deposits and then disappear. FINRA describes these investment-scam patterns.

The video may be only one part of a larger scheme. Fraudsters can use fake websites and marketing materials, impersonate government officials or analysts, or make false announcements in a CEO’s likeness to manipulate a stock. The FBI has also warned about investment-club promotions involving fake or bot accounts and impersonations of legitimate brokerages. In some cryptocurrency schemes, an apparent relationship is built first, then the victim is steered toward AI-based trading programs, short-term trades, quantitative strategies, or gold futures. A real person on a call does not, by itself, make the offer safe.

FINRA frames the risk with two practical questions: “Have you ever received a text or voice message from someone claiming to be an investment professional and requesting confidential personally identifiable information?” and “Have you seen a video posted on social media featuring a known celebrity promoting a ‘fantastic’ investment opportunity?” Either situation deserves independent verification before you respond.

How can I tell if an investment video is fake?

Behavior and contact channel

  • The approach is unsolicited or arrives through an unexpected social-media message, text, or call.
  • The person demands secrecy or immediate action, or resists reasonable identity checks.
  • They ask you to move to another messaging platform or blame technical problems when you try to verify who they are.
  • They request passwords, personal details, authentication codes, account access, or an immediate transfer.

These behaviors are more useful as reasons to stop than as proof of who is behind the message. FINRA advises not sharing verification codes or personal information by phone or text and recommends calling back using a trusted number rather than one supplied in a suspicious message. Its guidance puts the core rule plainly: “If a request involves money, account or device credentials/access, or sensitive information, always verify through a different, trusted channel.” FINRA’s deepfake guidance also identifies urgency, secrecy, pushback on verification, and unexpected channels as warning signs.

Possible audio and video anomalies

  • Audio sounds overly polished or slightly “off,” with mispronounced names, odd pauses, robotic pacing, or unnatural responses to interruptions.
  • Background noise changes inconsistently, or the voice and video appear out of sync.
  • The face looks irregular, expressions or movements seem stiff, shadows or lighting do not fit the setting, or accessories appear unusual.
  • The person refuses a reasonable simple action, such as moving the camera, when you ask to confirm the live setting.

The FBI lists distorted features, inaccurate shadows, unusual accessories, voice-call lag, and unnatural movement among possible clues. But these are not a pass/fail test: the FBI says AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it can be difficult to identify, and cloned voices may sound nearly identical to the real person. Detection tools can vary in effectiveness; the FTC notes that watermarks can be altered or removed and that false positives can cause harm. Do not treat a detector result, watermark, visual inspection, or live-video challenge as proof that a pitch is authentic. The FBI’s May 15, 2025 public service announcement and the FTC’s analysis of detection approaches explain these limits.

How do I verify an investment professional and offer?

  1. Stop while you verify. Do not transfer money, securities, cryptocurrency, or gift cards, or provide account access while someone is pressuring you. Never give passwords, personal details, or authentication codes to a caller or texter. FINRA and the FBI advise caution around these requests.
  2. Contact the person or firm through a separate trusted channel. Do not use the suspicious message’s link, QR code, or phone number. Find contact details independently on the organization’s official website or use a contact you previously verified. FINRA advises comparing an investment professional’s contact details with those disclosed in the firm’s Form CRS. See FINRA’s verification guidance.
  3. Check both the professional and the firm in official U.S. records. Use Investor.gov’s Ask and Check tool to reach IAPD for investment advisers and FINRA BrokerCheck for brokers and brokerage firms. Review registration status, background, and disclosures, and consider checking with the relevant state securities regulator. A matching name or registration is only one identity check, not an endorsement of the investment.
  4. Investigate the offer on its own merits. Search the company and program name with words such as “review,” “complaint,” “scam,” or “fraud.” Verify claims against independent sources, read the terms, and understand the risks. Do not make an investment decision solely from a newsletter, blog, testimonial, video, or AI-generated answer. The FTC’s consumer advice puts it this way: “Never put money into an investment based only on what someone claims or what you read in an online newsletter, review, or blog.”
  5. Verify claims of registration or approval directly. A claimed SEC filing, Form D, press release, or certificate does not establish that an investment or seller is registered, licensed, or approved. The SEC does not issue registration certificates; use the official lookup to check a claim. Investor.gov explains how to verify private-placement claims.
  6. Talk it through with someone outside the pitch. Choose a trusted person or qualified registered professional who is not involved in the offer. FINRA advises taking time to verify even when a plea feels urgent. Its guidance warns: “No matter how urgent the plea—especially when accompanied by directives such as ‘don’t tell my ___ [parents/spouse/roommates]’—take time to independently verify the situation before agreeing to transfer money or securities out of your investment account.” Read FINRA’s guidance on relationship investment scams.

For perspective, the FTC said consumers reported losing $4.6 billion to investment scams in 2023—more than to any other fraud category. That is reported consumer-loss data, not a complete tally of all losses. FTC data and advice provide the figure and its context.

Two other recent figures describe narrower categories, not all deepfake pitches: the FBI reported at least a 300 percent increase in victim complaints referencing ramp-and-dump stock fraud in 2025 compared with 2024, and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported more than $632 million in investment complaints with an AI nexus in 2025. The latter is complaint-reported loss; the same report said overall investment-scam losses exceeded $8 billion in 2025. The FBI’s 2025 IC3 report covers the AI-nexus figure.

What should I do if I already responded?

  1. Stop communicating through the suspicious channel. If you shared information or sent money, contact the affected bank, brokerage, payment service, or platform using contact information you source independently.
  2. Keep the evidence: messages, account names, phone numbers, links, payment instructions, and transaction records. Do not delete the conversation before preserving useful details.
  3. Report suspected internet-enabled investment fraud to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). You can also submit a consumer scam report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  4. Do not pay a person or company promising to recover lost money. The FBI warns that recovery offers can themselves be scams. See the FBI’s public service announcement.
