Treat a video, image or voice recording as unverified until you check who published it, whether the event is independently reported, what labels or provenance survive in the original file, and what a verifier actually tested. A Content Credential or watermark can describe origin or processing, but it is not a truth, consent or context certificate.
What you can—and cannot—conclude from a sports deepfake
An AI-generated sports post may reproduce a player’s face, voice, body movement or signature celebration while inventing the surrounding event. It could show a player apparently giving an interview that never happened, endorsing a product, announcing a transfer, discussing an injury or making an offensive statement. The likeness may be synthetic even when the stadium, jersey and broadcast graphics look familiar.

- AI-generated: the relevant image, audio or video was created by a generative system rather than captured from the claimed event.
- AI-manipulated: recorded material was altered, such as replacing a face, changing a mouth movement or synthesising a new voice.
- Misleading: genuine media is presented with a false date, quote, event, caption or context. No generative tool is required.
- Unverified: you do not yet have enough evidence to classify the file. This is the correct status when a detector returns no result or the original file is unavailable.
A convincing face is evidence only that the likeness resembles the player. It does not establish that the player appeared, spoke, consented, attended the game or made the alleged statement.

The safest verification sequence
Use the steps below in order. The first checks are quick and often resolve the claim without relying on a detector.
- Save the post and its URL. Record the account name, caption, timestamp, comments and any visible disclosure. Download the original file only when the platform permits it; do not overwrite the first copy.
- Identify the first publisher. Check whether the post came from the player, club, league, broadcaster or a known journalist. A repost account, anonymous channel or newly created profile deserves more scrutiny. Follow the chain back to the earliest available upload.
- Write down the specific claim. “The player appears in a video” is different from “the player announced a trade on Tuesday.” Note the alleged location, date, opponent, competition, interviewer and exact words. Vague claims cannot be checked effectively.
- Check the event independently. Search official player, team and league channels, match reports, press-conference schedules and reputable independent coverage. If a supposed interview, injury, transfer or endorsement would normally generate coverage and none exists, keep the clip unverified.
- Look for platform disclosures. Read labels such as “AI-generated” or “made with AI,” and inspect the caption for a creator’s disclosure. A label can indicate that a platform or uploader detected or declared synthetic content; its absence is not proof that the content is authentic.
- Inspect the original file’s provenance. When you have the original export, look for Content Credentials or another supported provenance record. Save the credential details before converting, cropping or re-encoding the file.
- Use a relevant verifier, understanding its scope. A tool that checks signals from one provider is not a universal AI detector. Record whether it found a supported signal, found none, or could not process the file.
- Compare versions. Check whether the audio, lip movement, subtitles, scoreboard and cuts match an earlier broadcast or interview. A shortened repost may remove the sentence that changes the meaning.
- Do not reshare consequential claims yet. Pause before forwarding allegations about misconduct, endorsements, trades, injuries, elections or financial matters. Share only after an official source or credible reporting confirms the underlying event.
How provenance and Content Credentials help
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) develops technical standards for certifying the source and history, or provenance, of media. A Content Credential can record information such as the originating application, edits and subsequent processing when that information was captured and signed.
That record answers a narrower question than “Is this story true?” It may show that a file passed through an editing program, was generated by a particular service or retained an earlier version. It does not prove that the depicted event occurred, that the player granted permission, that the publisher described the clip honestly or that every edit is recorded.
| What a provenance result can indicate | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|
| A recorded source or application | That the scene happened in the real world |
| Signed editing or processing history | That the player consented or owns the likeness |
| Whether supported credentials are intact | That the caption, date or quote is accurate |
| A relationship between versions of a file | That unrecorded edits or omissions did not occur |
Credentials can disappear when someone takes a screenshot, crops an image, records a screen, exports through an application that does not preserve the record or repeatedly compresses a video. A repost without credentials therefore tells you little about the original. Conversely, a valid credential is useful evidence about provenance, not a verdict on truth.
What OpenAI’s public checker can tell you
OpenAI’s help documentation describes supported Content Credentials and SynthID signals in some images made with its tools, and SynthID support for certain audio. Its public verification route looks for signals associated with OpenAI tools; it does not inspect every AI system or classify every synthetic file.

Interpret results narrowly:
| Result | Appropriate interpretation |
|---|---|
| A supported signal is detected | The file contains a signal associated with a supported OpenAI tool. Investigate the claim and context separately. |
| No supported signal is detected | Inconclusive. The file may be genuine, made by another system, unsupported, or stripped or degraded by sharing. |
| The file cannot be checked | Inconclusive. Preserve the original and use source and event verification instead. |
For the best chance of a meaningful check, use an original exported image without cropping or conversion where possible. OpenAI says audio clips between 10 and 60 seconds generally provide the best results. A downloaded social-media copy, screen recording or heavily edited montage may no longer carry the signal the checker expects.
OpenAI also cautions that provenance signals do not establish accuracy, an unedited file, legal ownership or correct context. The checker cannot determine who created a file or why, and it is not a general-purpose “deepfake detector.” Treat both a positive and a negative result as one piece of evidence in the wider sequence.
Platform labels: useful evidence, not a clean bill of health
Platforms can label synthetic media when they detect a technical marker or when a user discloses an AI edit. Meta’s February 2024 announcement described labels based on certain C2PA and IPTC markers for images and a disclosure path for photorealistic AI video or realistic-sounding audio. It also said that signals from other companies were not then detectable at the same scale for audio and video.
That announcement is a dated description, not a guarantee of the interface or detection coverage you will see today. Labels, menus and supported signals can change by product, country and media type; consult the platform’s current help documentation when reporting a post or interpreting a label.
- “AI” or “made with AI” label: evidence that the platform or uploader identified a qualifying signal or disclosure. It does not explain whether the entire clip is synthetic, which section was changed or whether the accompanying claim is true.
- No label: not evidence of authenticity. The creator may not have disclosed the edit, the platform may not recognise the marker, or a repost may have stripped it.
- Visible watermark: a clue about an app or generation workflow. It can be cropped, removed or copied onto unrelated footage and should not be treated as a technical certificate.
Visual and audio clues: why they are only prompts to investigate
People often look for distorted fingers, unreadable jersey lettering, strange teeth, inconsistent shadows, unnatural blinking, abrupt frame changes or a voice that sounds slightly metallic. Such defects can be useful prompts, especially in low-quality synthetic material, but they are not reliable tests. Real broadcast footage can contain motion blur, compression blocks, rolling-shutter distortion, dropped frames and unusual lighting. Modern generation and editing tools can also conceal earlier artifacts.

Face, body and clothing
- Check whether the face remains aligned with the head during turns and fast movement.
- Compare ears, hairline, tattoos, scars, protective equipment and jersey details across consecutive frames.
- Look for logos or scoreboard text that changes shape, spelling or position. Broadcast overlays can also be added later, so a perfect overlay proves little.
Lips, voice and breathing
- Listen for words whose consonants do not match the visible mouth shape, unnatural pauses, repeated breaths or a voice that lacks the player’s usual cadence.
- Compare the clip with a confirmed interview recorded in a similar setting. A familiar voice can be cloned, and a genuine recording can be dubbed or rearranged.
- Do not infer authenticity from emotion. Excitement, anger and laughter are easy to imitate and difficult to judge from a short, compressed clip.
Editing and chronology
- Watch for cuts hidden by camera flashes, crowd shots or subtitle changes.
- Check whether weather, uniforms, injuries and the stadium configuration match the alleged date.
- Extract a distinctive frame and search for earlier versions, while remembering that search results can repeat the same false source.
These observations can justify a closer check. They cannot, alone, justify calling a player a deepfake or accusing someone of misconduct.

A real recording can be paired with a false caption, and a synthetic recording can depict a claim that happens to be true. Separate the media question from the event question.
| Question | Evidence to seek |
|---|---|
| Did the game, interview or announcement occur? | Official schedules, match records, press-conference listings and contemporaneous reporting. |
| Was this the player’s account? | A verified profile linked from the club, league or player’s established channels, plus consistent posting history. |
| Were these the player’s words? | A complete recording, transcript or independent reports quoting the same statement. |
| Is the date and location plausible? | Travel schedules, team availability, uniforms, weather and venue footage from that date. |
| Is the endorsement or announcement authorised? | An official team, league, player or sponsor announcement—not merely a logo in the video. |
Use more than one independent source. A cluster of reposts is not independent confirmation if every account copied the same original upload. When a claim would materially affect a person’s reputation, health, employment or finances, wait for a statement from an official source or established reporting organisation.
Preserve evidence before it changes
Social posts can be edited, deleted or replaced. Keep the original URL, account handle, capture time in UTC, downloaded file name, visible caption and any disclosure label. If you create a screenshot for reference, retain the untouched download as well. Do not trim a clip before submitting it to a verifier; make a working copy for analysis.
For audio, preserve the complete available segment and note whether music, commentary or subtitles were added. For video, record the platform, post identifier and whether the file was downloaded, screen-recorded or forwarded. This information helps another reviewer understand why a signal may be missing.

When and how to report suspected impersonation
Report a post when it impersonates a player, uses a likeness without permission, falsely attributes a consequential statement or violates the platform’s manipulated-media rules. Save the URL and original file first. Use the platform’s current reporting flow because menu names and eligibility differ by service, account type and country.
Choose the most precise category available—impersonation, manipulated media, fraud, harassment or copyright-related misuse—rather than asserting a technical diagnosis you cannot prove. In the description, state what is verified (“the club has not published this announcement”) and what remains uncertain (“the file may be synthetic”), attach supporting links or screenshots where permitted, and avoid reposting the alleged deepfake while reporting it.
If the post threatens immediate safety, financial harm or targeted harassment, contact the relevant platform promptly and consider local law-enforcement or legal advice. Preserve evidence lawfully; do not attempt to access private accounts or retaliate against the uploader.
What the EU AI Act changes—and what it does not
The European Commission’s guidance states that transparency obligations in Article 50 of the EU AI Act apply from 2 August 2026. In specified circumstances, providers or deployers must use machine-readable marking for AI-generated or manipulated content, and deepfakes may require disclosure. The exact duty depends on the system, content, actor, use and other conditions in the law.

A decision framework for common cases
An alleged post-game interview appears on a repost account
Save the clip, locate the earliest upload, check the official post-game media schedule and look for a full recording from the broadcaster or team. If no independent source confirms the interview, label it unverified even if the face and voice look natural.
A video promotes a betting, health or financial product
Do not click through or share until the player’s official channels and the named organisation confirm the endorsement. Marketing graphics, a familiar voice and a provenance record cannot establish that a contract or consent exists.
A clip alleges an injury, transfer or suspension
Check the league’s transaction or disciplinary notices, team updates and reputable reporting. These claims can affect employment and markets; a detector result is not a substitute for confirmation.
A credential is present but the caption is sensational
Read the credential’s recorded history, then verify the date, location and wording independently. Provenance may show that an editing application handled the file while leaving the caption’s central assertion untested.
The checker returns no signal
Record the result as inconclusive. Obtain an original export if possible, check whether the file was cropped or converted, and return to source and event verification. Never rewrite “no supported signal” as “not AI.”
A compact checklist before you share
- Have I identified the earliest available publisher?
- What exact event, date, location and quotation does the post claim?
- Do official player, team or league channels confirm it?
- Is there a current platform disclosure or a preserved provenance record?
- What content type and provider signals did the verifier actually support?
- Could cropping, compression, a screenshot or a re-encode have removed the signal?
- Am I distinguishing AI-generated, AI-manipulated, misleading and unverified?
- Would sharing cause reputational, financial or safety harm if the claim is false?
If the answer to the last question is yes and independent confirmation is absent, do not share. “Unverified” is a responsible conclusion, not a failure to identify a deepfake.
