How to Spot AI-Generated Phishing Emails and Scam Websites

There is no dependable visual test that proves an email or website was written by AI. Treat polished wording as neutral evidence. Check the sender’s complete address, the domain in every link, the urgency and story, and whether you actually have an account with the named organization. Then contact that organization through a bookmark, a manually typed address, or a phone number found independently—not through the message.

Generative AI can make scams grammatically clean, translated, personalized and available at enormous scale. The safest method is independent verification: assume an unexpected request is untrusted until you confirm it outside the message.

Why AI makes phishing harder to recognize

Traditional advice often points to misspellings, awkward grammar or strange formatting. Those clues can still help, but they are no longer a reliable verdict. Google said on October 2, 2024, that artificial intelligence is making it easier for scammers to produce polished communications, while noting that many scam messages still contain misspellings, poor grammar or mismatched fonts. A clean-looking email can therefore be fraudulent, and a badly written one can be genuine.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported in 2024 that criminals use generative AI to create large numbers of fictitious social-media profiles, translate messages to limit grammatical or spelling errors, generate fraudulent investment websites and add AI-powered chatbots that prompt malicious clicks. The FBI described AI-generated text as a tool for social engineering, spear phishing and financial fraud.

AI also changes the economics of a scam. A criminal can produce many variations of a message, tailor language to a target, imitate a business tone and answer basic questions in a chat window. That makes writing style a weak authentication signal. The reliable questions are about identity, context, destination and independent confirmation.

The 60-second triage for an unexpected message

Use this sequence before clicking, replying, downloading or entering information:

  1. Pause. Do not let a deadline, threat or reward force an immediate decision.
  2. Read the complete sender address. Ignore the display name until the address and domain have been checked.
  3. Preview every destination. Hover over a link on a computer, or press and hold it on a phone if your mail app offers a preview. Do not open an unexpected link just to inspect it.
  4. Ask whether the story fits your life. If you have no account, order, payment or relationship with the named organization, the message is highly suspect.
  5. Verify elsewhere. Open a saved bookmark, type the organization’s address yourself or call a number obtained independently.
  6. Report and delete it. If it is fraudulent, use your mail provider’s reporting control rather than replying.

These steps work whether the text was written by a person, generated by AI or produced by a mixture of both.

How to inspect a suspicious email

1. Look for pressure and penalties

Urgency is a behavioral trick, not proof of authenticity. Common pressure patterns include a demand to act immediately, a warning that an account will close, a claim that a payment failed, or a request to confirm credentials before a deadline. Microsoft identifies urgent threats and penalties as common phishing patterns.

Do not decide based on how reasonable the deadline sounds. A real organization can be contacted independently. If the request is legitimate, you can complete it from the organization’s normal app or website after verification.

2. Inspect the actual sender address

Display names are easy to spoof. Expand the sender details and read the complete address, including the domain after the @ symbol. Compare it with the organization’s known domain character by character.

A lookalike domain, an unrelated domain, an extra word, a substituted character or a free-mail address used for a corporate request should make you stop. The visible name may say “Your bank,” while the address belongs to a different domain. Do not treat a familiar logo or signature as authentication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Preview links without trusting them

Links can show one destination in the message while opening another. Hover over a link on a computer to reveal its destination, or use your phone’s link-preview function without opening it. Read the domain, not just the words before it.

Do not click an unexpected password-reset, invoice, delivery or account-verification link. Instead, type the organization’s address yourself or use a bookmark you created earlier. If you already use the organization’s official app, open the app directly and check for a notice there.

4. Treat unexpected attachments as untrusted

Do not open an attachment merely because the message looks professional. An unexpected document, archive or invoice can carry malware or direct you to a fake sign-in page. Contact the supposed sender through a known channel and ask whether the file was sent.

5. Test the story against your real circumstances

Context is one of the strongest checks. If you do not have an account with the named company, an unsolicited account warning is probably phishing. If you do have an account, that still does not authenticate the message; criminals send broad campaigns and use publicly available information to make them seem relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask yourself:

  • Did I request a password reset, payment change or document?
  • Was I expecting contact from this organization?
  • Does the amount, order number or service match something I recognize?
  • Is the message asking for information the organization normally already has?

6. Treat polish as neither proof nor disproof

AI translation and editing can remove obvious errors. A smooth tone, perfect punctuation and consistent branding do not prove that the sender is genuine. Conversely, a typo does not prove a message is a scam; legitimate businesses make mistakes and compromised accounts can send authentic-looking messages. Use writing quality only as one minor clue after checking identity, context and destination.

How to inspect a suspected scam website

Read the address bar character by character

A scam page can copy a trusted company’s colors, logo, layout and help text. The browser address is more useful than the page design. Check the complete domain and look for misspellings, substituted characters, extra words or a domain that belongs to an unrelated organization.

Do not assume that a page is safe because it uses a lock icon or encrypted connection. Encryption protects the connection to the site; it does not establish that the site operator is legitimate. The decisive question is whether you reached the organization’s genuine domain through a trusted route.

Watch for an unexpected route

A link may begin with a familiar name in visible text but send you elsewhere. If the address bar changes to an unfamiliar domain after a redirect, stop. Close the page and open the real organization’s site from a bookmark or by typing the address yourself.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do not enter secrets on a page reached from an unsolicited message

Fake pages commonly request usernames, passwords, payment-card information or other sensitive details. If you followed an unexpected link, do not “test” the page by entering dummy credentials. Leave it and access the service independently.

Use browser protections, but do not outsource judgment

Microsoft documents SmartScreen in Edge as a control that can block known phishing websites. Such protections can reduce exposure, but they depend on detection and cannot recognize every new domain. A warning should end the visit; the absence of a warning is not a guarantee of safety.

A reliable independent-verification procedure

  1. Record the claim without acting on it. Note the organization, alleged problem and requested action, but do not use the message’s buttons, links or phone numbers.
  2. Open a trusted route. Use a bookmark, type the known address manually or open the official mobile application.
  3. Sign in only there. If the account has a genuine alert, it should be visible after you reach the service independently.
  4. Use an independently obtained phone number when necessary. Find it on a statement, a card, a prior contract or the organization’s known website—not in the suspicious message.
  5. Confirm the request’s details. Ask whether the organization really sent the notice and whether the requested payment, reset or document is required.
  6. Report the message. Use your email provider’s phishing control and retain the message if an investigator or your employer needs it.

This process deliberately separates the information in the message from the channel used to verify it. A criminal can control the message, its links and its phone number; it is much harder to control an independently chosen route.

What to do if you clicked

If you only opened the page

  1. Stop interacting with it and close the suspicious tab.
  2. Do not enter credentials, payment details or personal information.
  3. Update your security software and run a malware scan, especially if a file downloaded or the page prompted an installation.
  4. Contact the real organization through a known channel if the message claimed an account problem.

If you entered a password

  1. From a clean device or a trusted session, change the exposed password immediately.
  2. Change it anywhere else you reused it; reuse turns one stolen password into several compromised accounts.
  3. Enable multifactor authentication on the affected account and review recovery addresses, phone numbers, active sessions and recent activity.
  4. Tell the organization’s legitimate support team that the credential was submitted to a phishing page.

If you entered payment or identity information

Contact the financial institution or service provider using the number on a card, statement or official website. Ask what protective steps apply to the account. Watch for follow-up calls or emails that refer to the original incident; scammers often use a first disclosure to make a second request sound credible.

Report the incident

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission accepts fraud reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. FTC consumer guidance also points people to the Anti-Phishing Working Group for suspicious emails and to SPAM (7726) for suspicious text messages. Your workplace, school, bank or email provider may have additional reporting channels.

How built-in protections help—and where they stop

Security controls are useful layers, not substitutes for verification. When assessing an email or browser protection, consider detection coverage, the clarity of its warnings, whether it lets you inspect links and domains independently, malware-scanning capability, reporting workflow, update cadence and availability on every device you use.

Control or practice What it contributes Limitation
Mail-provider filtering Blocks or quarantines many known malicious messages before delivery New campaigns, compromised legitimate accounts and targeted messages can still arrive
Browser reputation protection Can warn about or block known phishing websites A new or previously unreported domain may not yet be listed
Link preview Shows the destination before you visit it Requires you to read the complete domain and does not make the destination safe
Malware scanning Checks a device after a suspicious download or click It cannot prove who wrote a message or authenticate a website’s operator
Multifactor authentication Reduces damage from a stolen password It does not make a phishing page legitimate, and some attacks target the second factor
Independent verification Checks the request through a channel the attacker did not choose Requires a pause and a separate action by the recipient

Google reported that Gmail blocks more than 99.9% of phishing emails. That is a platform performance figure, not a promise that every phishing email will be stopped or that a delivered message is safe. The same principle applies to browser warnings: use them, keep them updated and still inspect unexpected requests yourself.

What the available numbers do—and do not—show

Google reported in 2024 that more than 21 million people fell victim to fraud in the prior year and that 42% said they had lost money to scams or had sensitive information obtained and used fraudulently. These figures describe fraud exposure, not the percentage caused by AI-generated messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Federal Trade Commission’s 2025 consumer alert said email was the leading method scammers used to contact people in 2024. That identifies email as a major delivery channel, but it does not establish how many messages were AI-written.

No authoritative percentage for the share of phishing that is AI-generated has been established in the cited guidance. “AI-generated” can also mean different things: a message may be fully produced by a model, translated or edited by one, or sent through an AI-assisted campaign. Do not assign a precise percentage when the measurement method is undefined.

Illustrative cases

An unexpected password reset

You receive a polished notice saying your account will be locked unless you reset your password. You do not remember requesting a reset. Treat the link as untrusted, open the service from a bookmark and check the account’s security page. If no alert exists there, report the email.

A payment-failure message

An invoice email uses the company’s logo and asks for immediate payment. Read the sender’s full domain, preview the destination without clicking and compare the invoice with your records. Call the supplier using a number from a previous statement or contract before paying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A message from a company you never use

An account warning arrives from a service with which you have no relationship. The mismatch between the story and your circumstances is enough to avoid the link and attachment. Do not create an account or provide information simply to investigate the message.

A page that looks exactly right

You follow a link and see familiar colors, a logo and a sign-in form. Check the address bar rather than the artwork. If the domain is not the organization’s known domain, close the page. If you already submitted a password, follow the credential-response steps immediately.

A practical household and workplace checklist

  • Save bookmarks for banks, employers, schools, utilities and frequently used services.
  • Store official support numbers in a contact list or obtain them from statements and cards.
  • Teach family members and coworkers that display names, logos and perfect grammar are easy to imitate.
  • Require independent confirmation for payment changes, gift-card requests, payroll changes and credential resets.
  • Keep operating systems, browsers, mail apps and security software updated.
  • Turn on multifactor authentication, beginning with email because it often controls password resets for other accounts.
  • Report suspicious messages instead of forwarding them with active links to people who might click.

The rule that works when AI makes a scam look real

Do not try to identify the author from prose alone. A message is safe to act on only after its sender, destination and request have been verified through a route you selected independently. When urgency conflicts with verification, choose verification; a legitimate organization can wait while you reach it through its real website, app or published contact channel.
