No visual trick, watermark check or AI detector can decide on its own whether a news image is genuine. The reliable approach is layered: inspect the pixels for anomalies, trace where the file first appeared, examine the original file’s provenance and metadata, use a verifier whose coverage matches the suspected generator, and corroborate the claimed time, place and event with independent evidence.
That process can establish limited facts—such as whether a file carries a provenance record or a provider-specific watermark—but it cannot by itself prove that the caption is accurate or that the scene depicts what a post claims. Treat every signal as evidence to weigh, not as a final verdict.

Why one test cannot settle an image’s authenticity
“Real” and “fake” describe several different questions. A photograph may be an authentic camera capture attached to a false date or location. A genuine image may be cropped, color-adjusted or composited with another element. An AI-generated picture may look natural at a glance, while a heavily compressed real photograph may show artifacts that resemble synthetic imagery.
Visual inspection addresses appearance. Reverse search addresses where and when a file or similar image appeared. Metadata and Content Credentials address aspects of a file’s history. Provider tools such as Google’s SynthID check or OpenAI’s public verifier address only the signals those systems support. None of those questions is identical to “Is this news claim true?”

Use a positive result narrowly. A valid provenance record can show that a particular tool created or edited a file. It does not prove that the accompanying caption is truthful. Likewise, a missing watermark or credential is not evidence that a human camera made the image.
A practical verification workflow
1. Pause and preserve the claim
Before downloading, reposting or cropping the image, write down the exact claim attached to it. Record the account or publication that posted it, the stated date and location, and any wording that links the image to a breaking event. Save the original post or page when possible. A later copy may have a different caption, and that change can be as important as any pixel-level clue.
2. Inspect the whole image, then enlarge details
Start at normal size so you can judge the overall scene: perspective, lighting, crowd behavior and environmental context. Then zoom into signs, faces, hands, objects, reflections and edges. Look for:
- Garbled, misspelled or inconsistent lettering on signs, uniforms, screens and storefronts.
- Unusual anatomy, fused fingers, malformed ears, asymmetrical eyes or objects that merge into one another.
- Shadows or highlights that point in incompatible directions, or reflections that do not match the objects producing them.
- Repeated textures in foliage, crowds, brickwork, smoke or fabric that appear copied rather than naturally varied.
- Edges with impossible blending, especially where a person, vehicle or building meets the background.
These are leads for further checking, not proof. Resizing, sharpening, social-media compression and low light can create similar defects. Conversely, a polished synthetic image may contain no obvious anomaly at the size you receive.
3. Run a reverse image search, including useful crops
Search the complete image first, then crop distinctive elements such as a landmark, a sign or a person. Compare the earliest credible appearances, not merely the most popular result. An older photograph can be genuine yet misleading when it is recaptioned as a new disaster, protest or military event.

Check the date, caption, byline and location on each early result. Google describes reverse image search as a way to find original sources or similar images. In newsroom verification, the Associated Press also uses reverse searching and contacts the original photographer or publisher when possible. If you locate a likely source, ask whether the person still has the original file and whether the published crop or caption matches it.
4. Obtain the original file and inspect its history
A screenshot is a poor substitute for the source file. Screenshots and reposted copies often remove camera metadata and can introduce a new compression layer. Request the highest-quality file available from the photographer, eyewitness or publisher, and keep an untouched copy before opening it in an editor.

Metadata can support a timeline or reveal that a file passed through an editor, but it does not prove what the image depicts. A camera timestamp can be wrong, and metadata can be removed or changed.
5. Check provenance credentials and provider-specific signals
If the file carries Content Credentials, inspect the record rather than treating a badge as a truth stamp. C2PA defines these credentials as tamper-evident, machine-readable labels that can record origin and subsequent changes. A coherent chain can make the file’s history easier to audit; it still does not independently establish that the caption is accurate.
Use a verifier whose stated coverage matches the suspected source. Google’s Gemini help says its SynthID recognition currently covers content created by Google AI tools. OpenAI’s public checker examines supported images and audio for C2PA metadata and SynthID signals associated with OpenAI tools. Read the explanation attached to a result and note the scope.

6. Corroborate the event independently
Test the claim outside the image. Compare independent photographs or videos, eyewitness accounts, official notices, landmarks, road layouts, weather, shadows and the reported timeline. A location can often be checked against fixed features such as rooflines, utility poles or mountain profiles. Weather and daylight should be compatible with the stated time and place, but do not rely on a single weather screenshot or an unverified social post.
Contact the photographer, newsroom or organization identified as the source when practical. Ask for the original file, capture circumstances and permission to publish. If no independent evidence resolves a contradiction, describe the image as unverified instead of declaring it definitively real or fake.
7. Record what you know and what remains uncertain
Keep a short evidence log: the original URL or account, file name, dates found in reverse search, metadata fields, credential results, visual anomalies and corroborating sources. Separate observations (“the sign lettering is malformed”) from conclusions (“the image is AI-generated”). That distinction prevents a plausible clue from becoming an unsupported accusation.
How to read visual clues without overclaiming
Text and symbols
Image generators have historically struggled with small, regular lettering, but a low-resolution photograph, motion blur or a non-Latin script can also make text unreadable. Compare repeated letters and numbers, check whether a logo’s geometry is consistent, and search the wording separately. A sign that looks wrong should prompt a source search, not a verdict.
Anatomy and object boundaries
Inspect hands, jewelry, eyeglasses, tools and the points where objects overlap. Synthetic images may produce merged fingers or impossible attachments. Real scenes can produce the same appearance when a hand is occluded, a frame is blurred or several people overlap. Examine adjacent frames or earlier versions before drawing a conclusion.

Light, reflections and perspective
Trace the direction and softness of shadows and compare them with highlights on faces and surfaces. Check windows, puddles, mirrors and polished vehicles for reflections that should contain the same figures or light sources. A camera’s lens, HDR processing and wet surfaces can create confusing highlights, so use these observations to choose what to verify next.
Repeated textures and “too perfect” detail
Look for cloned leaves, identical faces in a crowd or patterns that continue through an object that should interrupt them. Also be cautious when an image appears unusually clean: denoising, upscaling and editorial retouching can remove natural texture without involving generative AI. Pixel appearance alone cannot identify the editing method.
What provenance tools can and cannot tell you
| Method | Signal it examines | What a positive result supports | What a negative or missing result means |
|---|---|---|---|
| C2PA Content Credentials | Tamper-evident, machine-readable provenance describing origin and edits | The file contains a signed history that can identify recorded creation or changes | There may be no credentials, or they may have been stripped or degraded; absence does not prove a camera capture |
| Google Gemini SynthID check | Provider-specific SynthID recognition for content created by Google AI tools | The image is likely associated with a supported Google AI creation signal | No detected watermark means only that this check found no supported Google AI signal; another AI system may have created the image, and minor or repeated edits can make detection fail |
| OpenAI public verifier | Supported image and audio files for C2PA metadata and SynthID signals associated with OpenAI tools | A detected signal indicates likely origin from supported OpenAI tools | A signal may be missing because metadata was stripped or tampered with, a watermark degraded, the file came from a legacy generation or predates available signals, or another company’s model was used |
| Ordinary file metadata | Camera model, capture time, settings, location when present and editing-software traces | Clues about the file’s handling and possible timeline | Metadata can be absent, incorrect or altered, and it cannot prove what the scene depicts |
| Reverse image search | Earlier appearances, related files and source context | A path to an earlier publisher, photographer or caption | No match may reflect cropping, low resolution, a new image or limited indexing; it is not proof of originality |
Provider tools answer a narrower question than “Is this news true?” Google’s documentation limits SynthID recognition to Google AI tools. OpenAI explains that its checker covers supported signals associated with OpenAI and that missing signals have several possible causes. Always preserve the provider’s qualification alongside the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understanding altered photographs
Alteration is not one category. A newsroom may crop an image for layout, adjust exposure or remove dust without changing the event. A deceptive post may splice people from different photographs, replace a background, erase a sign or reuse a genuine image with a false date. Provenance records can show that an edit occurred, but the editorial question is whether the change affects the claim being made.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCompare versions when you find them. Differences in crop, color, object placement and caption should be documented separately. If an edit removes context—such as a police line, a weather feature or a second person—describe the omission precisely rather than using the broad label “fake.”

Newsroom standards and professional verification
The Associated Press stated in its newsroom standards announcement of July 23, 2026: “AI does not replace reporting, sourcing, editorial judgment or verification.” AP says it prohibits generative AI from creating, altering or enhancing news photography, and requires AI-generated or manipulated material included in AP journalism to be clearly identified and presented in context. That is AP policy, not a universal rule for every publication.
AP Verify illustrates the kind of newsroom dashboard professionals may use. AP describes it as combining reverse image search, frame-by-frame video analysis, social listening, geolocation, and object or landmark detection for its global news operations. Readers do not need access to that system to follow the underlying method: preserve the source, trace the earliest appearance, test geography and chronology, and seek independent reporting.
Current labeling rules are jurisdiction-specific
On June 10, 2026, the European Commission published a voluntary Code of Practice on marking and labelling AI-generated content. The Commission says it supports transparency obligations under the EU AI Act that apply from August 2, 2026, including clear labels for deepfakes and certain AI-generated or manipulated public-interest content. The described obligations concern the European Union and specified categories; they are not a universal labeling rule for every image or country.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A label can improve transparency without proving a caption. Conversely, an unlabeled image may come from a jurisdiction, platform or creator outside the rule’s scope, or the label may have been lost during reposting.
Common mistakes that produce false certainty
- Relying on one visual oddity. Compression, blur and unusual camera angles can mimic synthetic artifacts.
- Treating a detector score as a verdict. Coverage varies by provider, file type, model generation and editing history.
- Assuming no watermark means human-made. A missing signal may reflect unsupported software, stripped metadata, degradation or an older file.
- Confusing origin with truth. A credential can document creation and edits while leaving the caption or context unverified.
- Ignoring older genuine images. Reuse of a real photograph for a new event is a common form of misinformation.
- Analyzing only a screenshot. Screenshots hide or replace the original file’s metadata and provenance.
- Calling an image fake when the evidence is unresolved. “Unverified,” with the reason, is more accurate than an unsupported definitive label.
A concise checklist before you share
- Write down the exact claim, account and stated date and location.
- View the entire image and enlarged details; note anomalies without calling them proof.
- Reverse-search the full image and distinctive crops; compare the earliest credible sources.
- Obtain the original file if possible and preserve an untouched copy.
- Inspect Content Credentials and ordinary metadata, recording what each field actually establishes.
- Run a provider-specific verifier only when its stated coverage fits the suspected source.
- Corroborate the scene with independent images, witnesses, landmarks, weather and timelines.
- Report the conclusion at the strength the evidence supports: verified, contradicted, altered in a specified way, or still unverified.
The safest habit is to keep the claim, the file and the evidence trail together. An image can be authentic pixels, altered context or both; layered verification is how you tell those possibilities apart.
