How to Spot AI-Generated Content Before You Share It

Before sharing suspicious content, pause and check three things: its labels or provenance record, its earliest traceable source, and the claim’s independent evidence. Visual oddities and detector results can help you decide what to investigate, but neither a missing signal nor a positive match proves that content is human-made, AI-generated, accurate, or shown in context.

What you are actually trying to establish

“Is this AI-generated?” sounds like one question, but a responsible sharing decision involves several different questions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • What is the file’s provenance? Can its origin, editing history, or publishing path be authenticated?
  • Was AI involved? A label, signed credential, watermark, or provider-specific match may indicate an association with an AI system.
  • Is the claim true? A genuine camera file can carry a false caption, while synthetic media can be used to illustrate a true event.
  • Is the media shown in context? An old photograph, altered clip, or unrelated recording can be paired with a new claim.

These questions must not be collapsed into one verdict. Content Credentials, for example, can record a file’s origin and changes, but their presence does not automatically mean the file was generated by AI. Conversely, a file without credentials may simply have been converted, compressed, cropped, screenshotted, reposted, or produced by an unsupported tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use provenance to understand a file’s history, then verify the claim and context separately. That separation prevents two common mistakes: treating “AI-made” as proof of falsehood and treating “no AI label” as proof of authenticity.

A five-step check before you share

Use this sequence when a post is emotionally provocative, urgent, financially consequential, or likely to influence a public decision.

  1. Pause. Do not repost while your strongest emotional reaction is driving the decision. Save the post or download the original file when the platform allows it, but avoid editing the copy you intend to examine.
  2. Look for disclosure and provenance. Check the post, media viewer, account details, and download information for an AI label, Content Credentials, or another provenance record. Record what the signal actually says rather than translating it into “true” or “fake.”
  3. Preserve the best available file. If you use a provider-specific verifier, submit the original export whenever possible. OpenAI’s guidance for its supported provenance checks recommends avoiding prior cropping or conversion, because transformations can remove or alter the signal being checked.
  4. Trace the media. Search for the earliest accessible image, clip, audio recording, or publication. Compare dates, captions, edits, and the account or publisher that first posted each version.
  5. Corroborate the claim. For important claims, look for independent reputable reporting, official records, direct statements, or other primary evidence. If the origin or context remains unclear, do not present a guess as a finding.

This process does not promise a universal detector. It combines several imperfect signals so that one missing label or one automated result does not decide the case by itself.

How labels and provenance records work

Platform disclosures are clues, not truth certificates

A platform may attach a label indicating that a post contains AI-generated or manipulated material. Read the wording and scope carefully. A label may identify a disclosure supplied by the uploader, a platform’s own classification, or a machine-readable signal from a participating provider. It may cover only part of a post, such as an edited image inside a text update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An unlabeled post is not thereby human-made. Label systems differ by platform, country, product, file format, and rollout stage. A creator may have used an unsupported tool, removed the signal during editing, or uploaded a screenshot that no longer carries the original record.

Content Credentials and C2PA

Content Credentials, based on the C2PA technical standard, can attach signed information about a file’s origin and history. The approach is used for AI media as well as camera and news workflows, so a credential is not synonymous with synthetic generation. It may show that a camera captured the original, that an editor made a change, or that a participating application exported the file.

Inspect what the credential asserts and who made each assertion. C2PA guidance distinguishes provenance statements created by a signer from information gathered from external or user-provided sources. Those fields do not all have the same evidentiary weight. A signed record can establish that a particular statement was issued by a particular signer; it does not establish that every caption attached later is accurate.

Why missing metadata proves very little

Provenance information can disappear during conversion, sharing, screenshots, cropping, compression, noise, or other transformations. A product may not support the standard, or the file may predate the relevant signal. Watermarks can also be degraded by ordinary image and video processing. Therefore, “no credentials found” means only that the checker did not find a usable record in that copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a positive verifier result means

A provider-specific verifier can test only the provenance signals it supports. OpenAI describes a match as an association with supported OpenAI tools or signals. It is not a finding about factual accuracy, authorship, ownership, intent, or the complete extent of AI involvement, and it does not detect every AI system. Treat the result as one piece of provenance evidence, not a universal AI detector.

Why visual oddities and detector scores are unreliable verdicts

Use visual inspection to generate questions

Look closely for inconsistent shadows, reflections, perspective, repeated textures, impossible text, mismatched lip movement, abrupt changes in lighting, or details that change between frames. These observations can tell you where to investigate: zoom the full image, inspect adjacent frames, locate an earlier upload, or compare the caption with what is actually visible.

They are not proof. Real photographs can contain motion blur, lens distortion, stitching errors, compression blocks, unusual anatomy caused by a momentary pose, or reflections that are difficult to interpret. High-quality synthetic media may avoid obvious artifacts, while a genuine file may look strange after several reposts.

Automated detectors have both kinds of error

A detector can miss synthetic material (a false negative) or flag human-made material (a false positive). Performance can change with language, image size, compression, editing, model family, and the type of media being examined. No universal consumer accuracy figure or comparative benchmark has been established for ordinary checks here, so do not quote a percentage as if it applies to every post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NIST’s identity-proofing guidance states: “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” That statement concerns organizations processing remote identity evidence, not a guarantee for social-media checking. Its broader lesson is applicable: automated analysis should be paired with human review, especially when a mistaken decision could harm someone.

Google’s literal search prompts

Google’s consumer guidance suggests asking “Is this made with AI?” and “Is this AI generated?” These phrases can help you find relevant explanations or checks, but a result from any single tool remains a limited signal. Search results themselves can repeat an incorrect claim, so evaluate the underlying source and evidence.

Trace the earliest available source

Search the media, not only the caption

Copy a distinctive frame, image, quotation, or audio phrase into a search service, or use the platform’s image-search function where available. Try more than one crop if text, borders, or overlays may be blocking a match. The goal is not to find the first page that repeats the post; it is to locate the oldest accessible version and compare how the media and caption changed.

Compare dates and versions

  • Record the publication date of each version and note whether a claimed event occurred before the file existed.
  • Compare dimensions, visible edits, subtitles, logos, sound, and missing or added frames.
  • Check whether a repost has changed the caption, translated a statement, or removed a disclaimer.
  • Identify whether the earliest account is an eyewitness, an official organization, a news publisher, an anonymous aggregator, or an account with no verifiable connection to the event.

Read the full context

Open the complete post rather than relying on a screenshot. Read replies or corrections when they provide links to primary records, but do not treat popularity or repetition as corroboration. A genuine image can be paired with a misleading location, date, quote, or description. Verify what the media depicts before deciding what it proves.

Compare the main verification approaches

Approach What it checks Coverage and weaknesses Meaning of a positive result Meaning of a negative result
Signed provenance or Content Credentials Origin and recorded edits asserted through a provenance system Depends on participating products and intact metadata; conversion, screenshots, cropping, compression, and reposting can remove the record The signer issued the recorded assertion; inspect which fields were signed and which came from external or user-provided sources No usable credential was found in that copy; the absence does not prove human authorship
Embedded or visible watermark A provider’s marking in pixels, audio, or file data Can be degraded, obscured, cropped, recompressed, or unsupported in the file you have May indicate association with the marking provider, subject to that provider’s documentation No detectable mark; this is inconclusive after editing or format changes
Platform AI disclosure A platform or uploader’s label about AI generation or manipulation Labels vary by jurisdiction, platform, policy, language, and rollout; not every post is covered The post has the stated disclosure, not a guarantee that its claim is true or false No label was shown; the post may still contain AI or may have lost its signal
Source-history search Earliest accessible publication, account, dates, and version changes Search indexes can be incomplete; deleted or private originals may be unreachable Provides evidence about where and when a version appeared and how its caption changed Failure to find an earlier copy does not establish that the current copy is original
Claim and context corroboration Whether independent reporting or primary records support what the media claims Requires time and reliable sources; evidence may remain incomplete during breaking events Supports the specific claim under examination, not necessarily the file’s authorship Leaves the claim unverified; it does not automatically prove fabrication
Visual or automated detector Patterns associated with synthetic generation or manipulation False positives and false negatives; performance varies by media, edits, and detector A lead for further checking, not a conclusive identification No detected pattern; not proof of human creation
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Verify the claim independently

After examining provenance, write down the exact proposition you are being asked to believe. “This politician said X,” “this storm happened in this city,” and “this product caused Y” are different claims requiring different evidence.

  • For a public announcement, look for the issuing organization’s original statement, transcript, filing, or data.
  • For a breaking event, compare reporting from independent reputable outlets and check updates from relevant authorities.
  • For a scientific or medical assertion, locate the underlying study or guidance rather than relying on a graphic summarizing it.
  • For a quotation, search the complete speech, interview, recording, or transcript and check whether the words were translated or clipped.
  • For a location or date, compare the media with contemporaneous records and details visible outside the cropped frame.

Independence matters. Ten accounts copying one video are still one source. A second source is useful only when it obtained information separately or points to primary evidence.

What to do when signals conflict

A credential says “camera,” but the caption claims a new event

The credential may support the file’s capture history while saying nothing about when or where it was reposted. Search the earliest publication and test the caption separately. An authentic file can be miscaptioned.

A detector flags the file, but reliable records support the event

Check whether the detector supports that file type and whether the file was compressed or edited. The result may indicate a transformation rather than fabrication. Preserve the original, seek another source, and avoid declaring the event false solely because of the flag.

No label exists, and the source cannot be found

Describe the status accurately: the origin is unverified. Do not upgrade uncertainty into either “definitely AI” or “definitely real.” For consequential content, wait for independent confirmation before sharing.

A label appears, but the claim seems plausible

AI involvement and factual accuracy are separate questions. Verify the claim using independent evidence, then describe the media as labeled or disclosed rather than treating the label as a complete explanation of how it was made.

Labels under the European Union’s 2026 rules

The European Commission says transparency obligations under Article 50 of the EU AI Act apply from 2 August 2026. The rules address machine-readable marking by providers and disclosure duties for deployers in specified situations, including certain deepfakes and some AI-generated or manipulated text of public interest, subject to the conditions in the legislation.

This is an EU legal context, not a worldwide labeling guarantee and not legal advice. A post viewed elsewhere may not carry the same disclosure, and an EU label does not establish that the accompanying claim is accurate. The Commission’s voluntary Code of Practice is a way for organizations to demonstrate compliance; it is not a measure of detector accuracy or the prevalence of synthetic content. About 190 organizations had signed that voluntary code by the end of July 2026, a signatory count rather than a coverage statistic.

Media-specific checks

Images

  • View the uncropped image and inspect text, reflections, shadows, repeated patterns, and edges.
  • Search distinctive sections and compare the earliest dimensions, date, and caption.
  • Check provenance before opening an editor or converting the file, since those actions can discard metadata.

Video

  • Check several moments, not one suspicious frame. Look for changes in faces, hands, signage, lighting, and audio synchronization.
  • Compare the full runtime with shorter reposts; an omitted beginning or ending can change the meaning.
  • Search keyframes and identify whether the earliest upload includes a different description.

Audio

  • Compare the speaker, date, and recording context with an independent transcript or statement.
  • Listen for abrupt edits, unnatural room tone, or repeated background noise, but treat these as prompts for verification rather than proof.
  • Check whether the clip is an impersonation, parody, translation, or excerpt from a longer recording.

Text

  • Look for an AI disclosure and identify the person or organization responsible for publishing the text.
  • Check quotations, statistics, dates, and links against primary sources.
  • Do not infer authorship from style alone. Human writers and language models can produce polished, awkward, formulaic, or inconsistent prose.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • “It looks strange, so it is AI.” Compression, lenses, stitching, and ordinary editing can create artifacts.
  • “There is no watermark, so it is real.” Signals can be absent, unsupported, or stripped during sharing.
  • “The verifier found a match, so the claim is false.” A supported-provider match says something limited about provenance, not truth or intent.
  • “Everyone is reposting it, so it is confirmed.” Repetition is not independent corroboration.
  • “A real source shared it, so the caption is correct.” Reputable accounts can make mistakes, quote incomplete material, or share an old file in a new context.
  • “One detector score settles it.” Automated systems can miss synthetic material and flag human-made material.

How to state uncertainty responsibly

Use precise language that matches the evidence. Examples include:

  • “The platform labels this post as AI-generated; the label does not verify the accompanying claim.”
  • “A provenance record associates this file with a supported tool, but it does not establish who authored the caption or whether the event occurred as described.”
  • “No provenance signal was found in this repost. Because the file was compressed and cropped, its origin remains unverified.”
  • “The earliest version located predates the claimed event, so the caption is misleading even though the image itself may be authentic.”
  • “A detector flagged the clip, but that result is not conclusive and independent confirmation is still unavailable.”

These formulations tell readers what is known, what is not known, and what evidence would change the assessment.

Make the sharing decision

Share only when you can describe both the media and the claim accurately. If provenance is intact, explain what it records; if it is missing, say that the origin could not be established. If the claim lacks independent support, withhold it or share it explicitly as unverified. When the stakes are high, the cost of waiting for corroboration is usually lower than the cost of amplifying a false or decontextualized post.
