How to Spot Address-Poisoning Scams on Solana Before You Send SOL

Never choose a Solana recipient just because the address appears in your recent transactions. Address poisoning works by placing a scammer’s look-alike address where you expect to find a legitimate one. Before signing, retrieve the destination from a trusted source, compare it carefully, and verify the recipient shown by your wallet. A mistaken native SOL transfer can succeed and permanently lock the funds, according to Solana’s address-verification guidance.

An unfamiliar or tiny incoming transaction can be a warning to investigate, but it does not by itself prove that your wallet has been compromised. The practical danger is copying the wrong destination from a familiar-looking history entry.

What address poisoning is

Address poisoning is a social-engineering attack against the way people reuse wallet addresses. The attacker creates or uses an address that resembles one you have previously paid. It is then placed in your transaction history or another address list, often through a small unsolicited transfer. The goal is not necessarily to steal funds immediately. Instead, the attacker waits for you to make a legitimate payment and select the deceptive address because it looks familiar.

On Solana, look-alike addresses commonly imitate visible characters at the beginning and end of an address. Solscan warns that checking only those portions can fool you; the middle of the address may be completely different. See Solscan’s explanation of address poisoning on Solana.

The scam exploits a habit: opening a wallet’s recent-activity list, recognizing the first and last few characters of an address, and copying it without independently confirming the complete destination. A blockchain transaction can then be validly signed while sending funds to the attacker.

How the scam unfolds

  1. The attacker prepares a look-alike address. It is designed to resemble a destination you have used, especially in the characters most wallets and explorers display first and last.
  2. The address is seeded into a list you trust too much. A small transfer or another transaction can make it appear in recent activity. Seeing it there does not establish that it belongs to your usual recipient.
  3. You later start a real payment. You search recent transactions, copy the familiar-looking entry, or select it from an address list.
  4. You approve the transaction. The wallet may correctly execute exactly what you signed. The error is selecting the wrong recipient, not necessarily a failure of the Solana network.
  5. The funds arrive at the wrong destination. Native SOL sent to an unexpected account may be accepted and become unrecoverable.

This is why an address that looks familiar is not evidence of identity. Treat every destination as untrusted until you obtain it through a separate, reliable channel.

What a tiny or unknown SOL transaction means

A very small incoming transfer from an unfamiliar address is a useful reason to slow down and inspect your activity. It may be an attempt to poison your history, but the transaction alone does not prove that interpretation. Solscan specifically cautions against attributing every unsolicited transaction to one scam without checking its details.

Use the event as a review trigger rather than as a diagnosis:

  • Do not copy the sender’s address for a future payment merely because it now appears in your history.
  • Do not assume that a tiny transfer means your private key has been exposed.
  • Inspect the transaction in an explorer and identify what actually occurred before deciding that the wallet is compromised.
  • Continue using independently verified recipient information for every payment.

The key distinction is between an unsolicited transaction and an unauthorized outgoing transfer. Address poisoning targets recipient selection; it does not make every unknown incoming transaction proof that someone controls your wallet.

Which recipient sources are safe to rely on?

No wallet feature can establish that an address belongs to the person or service you intend to pay. The trust comes from how you obtained and confirmed the address. Use this hierarchy when deciding where to copy a destination.

Recipient source How to treat it Reason
Recent transaction history Untrusted for identity A poisoned entry is deliberately made to look familiar. Its presence in your history does not prove ownership.
A person’s address sent through a known, separately confirmed channel Preferred You can verify the address with the intended recipient rather than relying on an old transaction.
An exchange’s official deposit page Preferred Retrieve the current deposit address from the service’s official interface, not from a previous withdrawal record or an unsolicited message. Solscan lists official exchange deposit pages as trusted sources.
Your own address book entry Useful only if you verified it when saving it An address book preserves what you entered; it does not independently validate that the entry belongs to the intended recipient.
An address pasted from an unknown message, comment, or social post Untrusted The sender’s identity and the destination may both be deceptive.

For a high-value transfer, confirm the address through a second known channel. For example, if someone sends an address in a chat, call or message them through a previously established contact method and read back the complete address or a clearly defined portion that both parties can verify. Do not treat a matching prefix and suffix as sufficient.

How to verify a Solana address before sending

  1. Pause before opening transaction history. Decide who should receive the payment and what kind of destination the payment requires. Do not begin by searching for a familiar-looking address.
  2. Retrieve the destination independently. Ask the recipient through a known channel, open the official deposit page for the service, or use an address-book record that you personally verified earlier. If you cannot establish the source, do not send.
  3. Compare the complete address. Paste the independently obtained address into the wallet’s recipient field and compare it with the address supplied by the recipient. Checking only the first and last few characters can miss a look-alike; Solscan describes that exact failure mode.
  4. Read the wallet’s transaction review screen. Confirm the recipient address, asset, amount, and any network or account details shown. Solana’s safety guidance says to understand what you are signing and, if confused, not to approve: “If confused, don’t approve.” See Solana’s Staying Safe on Solana guidance.
  5. Classify the destination correctly. Native SOL and SPL tokens have different transfer checks. Use the rules in the next section rather than assuming that every Solana address can safely receive every asset.
  6. Use a test transfer for a large payment. Solana recommends sending a test amount when the transfer is substantial. Wait for the intended recipient to confirm receipt before sending the remainder.
  7. Approve only after the details make sense. A familiar address, a time limit, pressure from a message, or an unexplained tiny transaction is not a reason to skip verification.

Native SOL and SPL tokens do not behave identically

One of the most important Solana-specific checks is identifying whether you are sending native SOL or an SPL token. Solana’s technical verification documentation describes an important difference.

Asset Verification behavior described by Solana What you should do
Native SOL A transfer should go to a System Program wallet, or to an unfunded on-curve address that becomes one. A native SOL transfer to an unexpected account may still succeed. Verify the recipient address and account type before signing. A mistaken destination can permanently lock the SOL.
SPL token Token transfers validate that the source and destination token accounts correspond to the expected token mint; a mismatch is rejected. Keep verifying the recipient address. The token-account check helps detect a mint mismatch, but it does not prove that the destination belongs to the person you intended to pay.

These checks solve different problems. Token-account validation can reject an incompatible token account; it cannot tell whether a look-alike address was selected on purpose or by mistake. Native SOL does not provide that same mint-based guard, so recipient verification is especially critical.

For the underlying account and transfer rules, consult Solana’s Verify Address documentation. For basic sending and receiving concepts, Solana also provides Sending and Receiving SOL.

How to inspect a suspicious history entry

If an unfamiliar address appears in your activity, investigate without treating it as a candidate recipient.

Check the direction and amount

Determine whether the transaction was incoming or outgoing and note the amount and asset. A tiny incoming transfer is a clue to examine, not proof that the wallet has been drained or taken over.

Check the exact address

Open the transaction details in a Solana explorer and view the full address rather than relying on the shortened display. Compare it with the address you normally use. Similar visible characters do not establish that the strings match.

Check the asset and account involved

Confirm whether the event involved native SOL or an SPL token and identify the relevant token account. This helps separate a simple unsolicited transfer from an action involving a different asset or account.

Mark the entry as untrusted

Do not save it as a contact, use it as a transfer shortcut, or copy it for a future payment. The safest practical response to a look-alike entry is to obtain the intended address again from an independent source.

Why transaction history is a poor identity check

History is useful for accounting, but it is not an address directory. It records what happened on-chain; it does not certify why a transaction happened or who controls an address. An attacker can exploit the visual shortcuts that wallets and explorers use to make long base58 addresses readable.

When a list shows only a beginning and ending fragment, two different addresses can appear equivalent at a glance. Even if you previously paid a legitimate recipient, a later look-alike entry can sit next to it and become the one you copy. Solscan’s guidance therefore emphasizes trusted contacts, verified address books, and official deposit pages instead of recent-transaction selection.

Do not “confirm” an address by sending a tiny amount to it first. That test only proves that the address can receive a transaction; it does not prove that it belongs to your intended recipient. For a large payment, the safer test is a small transfer to the independently verified destination, followed by confirmation from the recipient.

Warning signs that should stop a transfer

  • The address came only from recent activity.
  • The visible beginning and ending match a familiar address, but you have not compared the complete string.
  • The recipient is pressuring you to send immediately or discouraging independent confirmation.
  • The wallet review screen shows an address, asset, or account type you do not understand.
  • You are sending native SOL to an account whose purpose or type is unclear.
  • You cannot reach the recipient through a previously known channel to confirm the destination.
  • You are relying on a screenshot, copied message, or shortened address display instead of the official destination record.

Any one of these conditions is enough to pause. A delayed transfer is preferable to an irreversible transfer to the wrong account.

What to do if you sent SOL to the wrong address

First, stop sending additional funds while you establish what happened. Record the transaction signature, destination address, asset, amount, and time. Then contact the intended recipient or service through its official, previously verified channel and explain that the transfer may have gone to a different address.

For native SOL, Solana warns that a mistaken transfer can succeed and permanently lock the funds. That means you should not assume that a wallet provider or network operator can reverse it. Recovery depends on who controls the destination account; do not send another payment to “unlock” or “reverse” the first one.

If the only evidence is an unknown tiny incoming transaction, do not describe the wallet as drained solely on that basis. Review outgoing transactions separately. Address poisoning is primarily a recipient-selection trick, while an unauthorized outgoing transfer would require a different investigation.

What a signing device can and cannot tell you

A signing device or wallet confirmation screen can display transaction details, but displaying an address is not the same as verifying the address’s identity. You still need to obtain the destination independently and compare it before signing. A device may help you see what you are approving; it cannot know whether a look-alike address belongs to your friend, your exchange account, or an attacker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a wallet’s saved-contact feature is only as reliable as the verification performed when the entry was created. The security improvement comes from the independent confirmation, not from the label or shortcut itself.

A repeatable Solana sending routine

Use the same routine every time, especially when the amount is significant:

  1. Name the intended recipient and asset before opening your wallet.
  2. Obtain the destination from a known contact, official deposit page, or verified personal record.
  3. Paste the address into the wallet and compare the full value, not just the displayed fragments.
  4. Confirm whether the payment is native SOL or an SPL token and review the destination account information.
  5. Read the complete transaction-review screen, including recipient and amount.
  6. For a large payment, send a small test amount to that independently verified destination and wait for confirmation.
  7. Approve only when you understand every material detail. If confused, don’t approve.
  8. Save the verified destination in your own address book only after the check is complete, and periodically re-confirm service deposit addresses because they can change.

This process deliberately removes recent transaction history from the role it should never have had: proving who a recipient is.

The essential rule

Address poisoning succeeds when familiarity substitutes for verification. A look-alike address in your Solana history is untrusted until you confirm it independently. Retrieve the intended destination, compare it carefully, check the wallet’s transaction details and account type, and use a test transfer for large payments. If the details do not make sense, do not sign.
