Before buying, match the exact set and edition to Pokémon’s official product images, inspect the box and its visible seals for inconsistencies, and assess the seller, provenance, price, and return options. Treat any mismatch as a reason to ask questions—not as proof by itself.
1. Match the exact ETB to Pokémon’s official product images
First identify the set and version shown in the listing. Special and standard ETBs can differ, and packaging varies between products and regional editions, so do not compare a box with a different set or edition. Pokémon Support recommends becoming familiar with images of official products in its guidance on suspected counterfeit cards and packs, updated May 26, 2026: Did I purchase fake or counterfeit cards?

Compare the listing with the official reference for the same product. Check the artwork, logos, wording, layout, and the contents pictured or described. If a detail differs, ask the seller to explain it and verify that the reference is for the same edition before drawing a conclusion.

For a remote purchase, ask for current photos of the actual box: front, back, both sides, top, bottom, corners, and visible seams. Generic promotional images cannot show the condition or details of the item the seller will send.

- Look for apparent inconsistencies in printing, spelling, artwork, logos, or packaging compared with the exact official product reference.
- Examine visible wrap and seams for signs that merit questions, such as damage or an irregular-looking closure.
- Ask for another photo or clarification if a key area is hidden, blurred, or missing.
Secondary guides from Cardmarket and TCGplayer discuss clues in counterfeit or resealed sealed products. Those examples are prompts for inspection, not universal ETB rules. No official universal specification for ETB weight, dimensions, seal placement, or shrink wrap is established by the sources cited here.
3. Treat packaging and seals as clues, not a verdict
An unusual-looking seam or wrap should prompt more questions, but one packaging detail alone does not establish that a box is fake. An authentic box that has been opened and resealed is also a different concern from a counterfeit box; listing photos may not let you determine which, if either, is the case. Do not use the bright-light test on the sealed box. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often visible through when held up to bright light; that advice concerns cards, not an unopened ETB. Its warning that fake booster packs can be difficult to discern is likewise about packs, not a guarantee or test for ETBs.
4. Check the seller, provenance, price, and recourse
Authentication is not only about the packaging. Consider whether the seller has a credible history, can explain where the box came from, provides photos of the actual item, and offers clear return terms. Provenance is one factor highlighted in the secondary sealed-product guidance linked above.

Compare the asking price with current offers for the same set and edition. Pokémon Support specifically warns that a booster pack priced dramatically below suggested retail is a strong counterfeit warning. That statement is pack-specific: it does not set a numeric threshold for ETBs. A low ETB price is a reason to investigate the listing and seller, not proof that the box is fake.
If you are considering a shop’s opinion, ask first whether it will assess an unopened ETB and what that assessment can establish. Pokémon Support recommends asking a local trading-card specialist about potentially counterfeit cards; that does not mean every shop evaluates sealed boxes.

5. Decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable
Use the checks together rather than looking for one decisive feature. A product-reference mismatch, unclear photos, questionable seller history, unexplained provenance, and an unusually low price are more concerning in combination than a single ambiguous seam. If the seller will not provide useful photos or answer reasonable questions, or several details still do not match, walking away is the safer choice.
- Lower concern: the exact product appears to match official imagery, the seller provides clear photos of the actual box, and the seller can explain its source and return terms.
- Needs more checking: photos omit key areas, packaging looks unusual, or the seller’s explanation is incomplete. Ask for specifics or seek an assessment whose scope includes unopened ETBs.
- High uncertainty: multiple details conflict with the correct product reference, or the seller will not substantiate the listing. Do not rely on a guess that a single visual clue settles authenticity.
These are practical buying judgments, not an official Pokémon authentication standard. The cited official guidance concerns suspected counterfeit cards and booster packs, while secondary sealed-product guides offer inspection clues rather than a universal test for every ETB.
