Assume an unfamiliar job lead is unverified until you confirm it through the employer’s independently found careers site and contact channel. Do not send Social Security, driver’s-license, bank-account, or credit-card information, pay a fee, deposit and forward a check, or buy equipment at a recruiter’s direction before that verification and a credible hiring process.
A polished job-board post, HTTPS padlock, convincing company logo, or professional-looking profile can all be copied. The safest test is independent confirmation of the opening, the recruiter’s identity, the interview process, and the timing of any information request.

What to check first when a job lead arrives
Layoffs create pressure to respond quickly, which is exactly what employment scammers exploit. Pause before replying to an unsolicited email, text, social-media message, or job-board invitation. Save the message and listing so you can compare details, then verify the opportunity outside the communication you received.
- Identify the claimed employer and recruiter. Write down the legal company name, role title, recruiter name, email address, phone number, and any website or scheduling link.
- Search independently. Use a separate browser search for the company and recruiter, adding terms such as “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” No search results or complaints do not prove that an offer is genuine; they only tell you what has been reported publicly.
- Navigate to the employer yourself. Type the company address into your browser or use a search result you choose, then open its official careers section. Do not rely on a link in the recruiter’s message. Look for the exact role, location, employment type, and job description.
- Confirm through a second channel. Use a phone number or email address listed on the independently found corporate site to ask whether the opening and recruiter are real. Do not use contact details supplied only by the person who contacted you.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation warns that criminals can spoof company websites as well as job-board listings. Finding a matching job on a website is useful, but confirmation through an independently found company contact is stronger evidence.

How to verify the recruiter’s identity
Check the email domain without treating it as proof
Recruiters generally use a corporate email account rather than a personal mailbox, according to Federal Trade Commission guidance. Compare the domain after the @ symbol with the employer’s real domain, watching for misspellings, extra words, unusual country endings, or look-alike characters. A corporate-looking domain can still be controlled by an impersonator, so domain matching is only one check.
Check the person and role
Search the recruiter’s name and claimed job title on the company’s independently found staff or professional pages. A missing, implausible, or mismatched profile is a warning sign, not conclusive proof of fraud. Some legitimate recruiters have limited public information, while scammers can copy real employees’ names and photographs. Ask the company’s main contact to confirm that the person is authorized to recruit for the specific opening.
Look at how the interview is arranged
Be cautious when an interview is conducted only through an unusual email-based teleconference account, when the interviewer will not answer basic questions about the job, or when you are pressured to decide immediately. The FBI’s 2021 warning identifies these as possible indicators, not a standalone test. A real employer may use a variety of video or messaging systems; the decisive question is whether the employer and process can be independently verified.
When requests for personal information become dangerous
Do not provide sensitive information merely to “reserve” an interview or complete an informal application. Warning signs include requests for a Social Security number, driver’s-license image, bank-account details, or credit-card number before a credible interview and hiring decision. The FBI states, “Never provide credit card information to an employer.”

Legitimate payroll onboarding may require identity and bank information after you are hired. Timing, identity, and a verifiable employment relationship matter more than the existence of the request itself. Ask what the information is for, which secure system will collect it, and whether the company’s independently found human-resources contact confirms the request. Do not email scans of identity documents to an unverified address or upload them to a site reached through an unsolicited message.
- Before an interview: treat requests for government identification, Social Security data, or banking information as a reason to stop and verify.
- Before a hiring decision: do not let a promise of “guaranteed selection” justify financial or identity disclosures.
- After verified hiring: provide only what the employer’s confirmed payroll process requires, through the secure channel the company identifies.
Never pay, forward money, or buy equipment for a promised job
Upfront fees and starter packages
Legitimate placement firms generally charge the hiring company, not the candidate. The Federal Trade Commission says, “Honest placement firms do not typically charge a fee to job candidates.” A demand for a registration fee, starter kit, mandatory training payment, certification purchase, or “job guarantee” is a serious warning sign. Do not send money by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, payment app, or bank transfer to a supposed recruiter.
Fake checks and reimbursement schemes
A common pattern is a check for equipment, supplies, or an advance followed by instructions to buy items, return an overpayment, or transfer part of the funds. A bank may make deposited money appear available before the check is finally rejected. If you forward money, you can be required to repay the bank while the scammer keeps what you sent.

If a legitimate employer needs equipment, it can purchase and ship it directly or explain a verified reimbursement policy after hiring.

Reshipping and reselling assignments
Some fake work-from-home jobs ask you to receive and reship packages. The goods may have been bought with stolen cards, leaving you involved in moving fraudulent merchandise. Other schemes ask you to buy products for resale that never arrive or are worthless. A job that uses your home as a shipping hub or requires you to purchase inventory before earning wages should be independently verified or declined.
Recognize task scams disguised as easy online work
Task scams often begin with an unexpected text or WhatsApp message offering flexible online work. The tasks may be liking videos, rating images, “product boosting,” or “app optimization.” A website or app displays commissions that appear to grow as you complete tasks, then demands a deposit to unlock more work or withdraw the balance. The displayed earnings are fictitious; paying the deposit only transfers your money to the scammer.
The FTC reported about 20,000 task-scam reports in the first half of 2024, compared with about 5,000 in all of 2023. It also reported approximately $41 million in cryptocurrency losses to job scams during the first half of 2024, versus about $21 million in all of 2023. These are reported amounts for those periods, not a count of every scam or a measure of all actual losses; many frauds are never reported.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not confuse a visible balance in an app with wages, and never send cryptocurrency or another deposit to release supposed commissions. An unsolicited, vague offer that cannot identify a real employer, supervisor, payroll method, and verifiable job description is not a normal hiring process.

Compare an opportunity against four independent checks
No single clue proves that a listing is fake. Several failures together should end the conversation until the employer confirms the facts.
| Check | What a verifiable opportunity provides | Warning pattern | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening | The same role appears on the employer’s independently navigated careers site with matching details. | The job exists only on a message or job board, or details conflict across pages. | Contact the employer through a separately found corporate channel. |
| Recruiter | Name, role, email domain, and contact details are confirmed by the company. | Identity is missing, implausible, mismatched, or confirmed only by the recruiter. | Stop sharing information until the company confirms the person. |
| Process | You receive a credible interview and a documented hiring decision before payroll onboarding. | Rushed offer, unusual interview account, or financial questions before basic job questions are answered. | Slow down and verify; do not let a deadline force a decision. |
| Money and equipment | The employer does not require candidate payment or personal-account transfers. | Fees, gift cards, cryptocurrency, check forwarding, or directed equipment purchases. | Decline and preserve the messages for reporting. |
A practical verification workflow
Before you apply
- Read the entire listing for a specific employer, supervisor or team, duties, location, pay structure, and employment status. Vague promises of unusually high pay for little work deserve extra scrutiny.
- Open a new browser window and find the employer’s official site independently. Check the careers page for the exact role and confirm that the application route uses the same domain.
- Search the recruiter’s name and company affiliation separately. Record discrepancies rather than trying to explain them away.
- Ask the company’s publicly listed human-resources or main-office contact whether the vacancy and recruiter exist. Keep a note of who confirmed it and when.
During interviews
- Ask what team the role joins, who the manager is, where the work is performed, how pay is handled, and what the next hiring step is.
- Confirm that the interviewer’s identity matches the person the company authorized. A profile, logo, or video background is not independent proof.
- Refuse requests for money, credit-card details, cryptocurrency, or personal-bank transfers. Legitimate interviewers can explain the process without demanding payment.
- Do not send identity documents until the employer and the secure collection system have been confirmed through an independent channel.
When an offer arrives
- Compare the offer letter’s legal entity, address, job title, pay, start date, and contact information with the independently verified company.
- Call the company using a number you found yourself, not the number printed only in the offer, and ask whether the offer is authentic.
- Verify that payroll instructions come through the employer’s confirmed onboarding system. Never route funds through your account for an employer.
- Decline any “overpayment,” equipment-vendor, or urgent-transfer instruction. A real offer does not require you to prove commitment by sending money.
What to do if you already replied, paid, or shared information
If money was sent or a check was deposited
- Contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, cryptocurrency exchange, or wire service immediately. State that the transaction is fraud and ask whether a stop, recall, or reversal is possible.
- If you deposited a check, tell the bank before sending any further funds and do not assume that an available balance means the check is final.
- Ask your institution to coordinate with the receiving institution where possible, and monitor the account for unauthorized activity.
- Preserve the listing, emails, phone numbers, payment receipts, wallet addresses, checks, and shipping records. Do not continue negotiating with the sender.
If identity information was exposed
Contact the affected financial institutions promptly, change reused passwords, and watch for unauthorized account activity. Use the Federal Trade Commission’s identity-theft guidance linked from its job-scam advice to determine appropriate protective steps. If a Social Security number or government ID was disclosed, document exactly what was shared and when so you can give accurate information to the institutions you contact.
Report the scam
- File a report with the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- For an internet-enabled employment scam, submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
- Report the listing and account to the job platform or messaging service.
- Notify the real company being impersonated so it can warn applicants and remove the fake posting.
Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but prompt notice can help payment providers and platforms act while records and transfers are still traceable.

For lower-risk starting points, the FTC lists USAJOBS for federal openings, CareerOneStop (sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor) for job listings and state employment or training resources, and USA.gov for local-government job sites. These services are starting points, not substitutes for checking the specific opening and communication. Verify each role and recruiter using the same independent process.
What the available loss figures do—and do not—tell you
Official reports show why caution matters but cannot calculate the probability that any particular listing is fake. The FTC reported $223 million in job-scam and employment-agency losses through June 2024, compared with $286 million in 2023, $179 million in 2022, $131 million in 2021, and $90 million in 2020. The figures come from Consumer Sentinel Network reports classified as job scams and employment agencies and are available through the FTC’s dashboard. They reflect reports, not all incidents.
Best Value
The FBI reported that 16,012 employment-scam victims reported more than $59 million in losses in 2020. That statistic appeared in a 2021 warning and is historical, not a current prevalence estimate. Use these numbers to understand the scale of reported harm, not to label a particular employer without verification.
Questions people ask after a layoff
Is a personal email address automatic proof of a scam?
No. It is a warning sign that requires context. Verify the employer, role, and recruiter through an independently found company channel before sharing information or proceeding.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does HTTPS mean the job website is safe?
No. HTTPS encrypts a connection but does not prove who operates the site. The FBI specifically warns that scammers can use HTTPS too.
Can a remote job be legitimate if there is no office interview?
Yes. Remote work is not itself evidence of fraud. Confirm the employer and hiring process independently, and reject any request for payment, check forwarding, or premature sensitive data.
Why would a real employer ask for my bank information?
Verified employers may need banking details for payroll after hiring. The safer test is whether the company, recruiter, role, and timing have been confirmed and whether the information is collected through a secure, official onboarding system.
What if the recruiter says the offer expires today?
Do not let an artificial deadline override verification. Pause, contact the employer through a channel you found yourself, and decline to send money or sensitive data while facts remain unconfirmed.
