How to Spot a Fake Job Listing on LinkedIn, Indeed, and Other Job Boards

A job posted on LinkedIn, Indeed, or another familiar board is not automatically genuine. Scammers can copy a real employer’s advertisement, alter the contact details, and repost it. Before you apply, independently find the employer’s official website, confirm that the exact vacancy exists there, verify the recruiter and email domain, and stop if anyone asks you to pay or provide sensitive financial or identity information unusually early.

Use the job board’s reporting tool for a suspicious listing or message, and report suspected fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The checks below work across major job boards, whether the first contact arrives through a listing, direct message, text, or email.

Why a familiar job board is not proof of a real job

Job boards make recruiting easier, but the platform’s name does not prove that an employer authorized a particular advertisement. A scammer may copy a legitimate company’s name, logo, job description, or old vacancy and then change the application link or contact information. A polished page can therefore represent an impersonated employer rather than a real opening.

Do not treat any one detail as conclusive. An incomplete profile, a remote interview, or a message that contains a typo can have innocent explanations. The reliable test is whether several independent pieces of evidence agree: the role appears on the employer’s own careers site, the recruiter can be connected to that employer, the communication uses a verifiable company channel, and the requested next step fits a normal stage of hiring.

Use the platform as a lead, not as your verification source. Open a new browser tab, locate the company independently, and work outward from information published on its official site.

The independent verification workflow

1. Find the employer yourself and check the exact vacancy

Do not rely solely on a link in a suspicious message or on the application button in the listing. Search for the company by name, type its address yourself, or use a bookmark you already trust. From the official site, navigate to the careers or jobs section and look for the same title.

Compare the details line by line: job title, location, employment type, duties, required experience, recruiter or department, and the way applications are submitted. A genuine posting may have been updated or closed since it appeared on a board, so a missing match is a reason to pause rather than automatic proof of fraud. However, if the board listing cannot be found anywhere on the employer’s independently located careers page, do not assume that the company approved it.

The Federal Trade Commission warns that criminals can take an old advertisement from a real employer, alter it, and repost it on an employment site. A copied logo or identical wording therefore has little value unless the current role is confirmed through the employer’s own channel.

2. Verify the recruiter, company connection, and email domain

Review the recruiter’s profile carefully. Check employment history, the stated company, location, and whether the profile has a credible connection to the organization. A profile that was recently created, has little history, or cannot be corroborated deserves extra caution, but profile appearance alone is not authentication.

Inspect every address used in the conversation. Compare the email domain with the domain shown on the employer’s genuine website. Be alert to look-alike spellings, free personal mail accounts, extra words, or a domain that belongs to an unrelated business. Also check where links lead before opening them; the visible text and the actual destination may differ.

If details do not match, contact the company through a phone number or contact form found independently on its official site. Ask whether the recruiter and vacancy are real. Do not use the phone number or email address supplied only in the suspicious message as your confirmation channel.

3. Treat requests for money as a stop sign

A legitimate employer should not require you to pay to obtain a job. Stop if a supposed recruiter sends an invoice for a computer, other equipment, training, certification, background processing, or any similar cost. Payment-app requests, including requests sent through services such as Zelle or PayPal, are especially dangerous because the transfer can be difficult to reverse.

Do not purchase equipment from a specified seller on the promise of reimbursement, and do not forward money to a “vendor” chosen by the recruiter. A virtual interview, branded document, or formal-looking offer letter does not make a payment request safe; scammers often use those materials to build confidence before asking for funds.

  • WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep forms neat and legible
  • ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms

Never deposit a check and return an alleged excess, equipment allowance, or shipping amount. A bank can make a deposited check appear available before discovering that it is counterfeit. If you send part of the money onward, you can remain responsible when the check is reversed.

4. Protect Social Security, bank, and other sensitive information

Be cautious when a contact asks for a Social Security number, bank account or routing details, copies of identity documents, or similar information before the employer and hiring stage have been independently verified. Indeed identifies requests for Social Security or bank information before hiring as a warning sign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not enter sensitive data into an unexpected form or follow a link whose destination you have not confirmed. Pause and establish three facts first: which legal employer is hiring, who in that organization is handling the process, and why that information is needed at this particular stage. A request can be legitimate later in hiring while still being unsafe when it arrives before a verified interview or offer.

5. Stop, preserve evidence, and report

When a check fails, stop responding rather than trying to negotiate around the warning. Save the listing URL, recruiter profile, email headers, payment instructions, invoices, and message history. Screenshots are useful if the content is later removed, but keep the original messages when possible.

Use the job board’s report option for a suspicious listing, recruiter, or message. LinkedIn provides reporting for job spam and scams. For suspected fraud, submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Reporting does not prove that every unusual listing is criminal, but it gives the platform and authorities information they can act on.

Compare the opportunity evidence before you act

Evaluate the opportunity across independent evidence points rather than counting reassuring details such as a logo or a professional-looking interview invitation.

Evidence to compare What supports legitimacy What requires a pause
Employer vacancy The exact role, location, duties, and application route appear on the employer’s independently found careers page. The role exists only on the board, uses a different application route, or copies an old advertisement with altered details.
Recruiter identity The profile and employment claim can be corroborated through the company’s own contact channels. The person cannot be connected to the employer, or the profile and message provide inconsistent company details.
Communication channel The email domain and links match details published by the real employer, and you can confirm them independently. A personal mailbox, look-alike domain, mismatched website, or pressure to use an unverified channel.
Application stage Questions and documents are proportionate to a verified stage of hiring and are submitted through a trusted method. An unexpected form asks for identity or bank information before the employer and role are confirmed.
Money No payment is required from the applicant to obtain the job. An invoice, payment-app transfer, equipment purchase, fee, or request to return money from a check.

One warning does not establish fraud in every case, and several reassuring details can be manufactured. The deciding factor is independent confirmation, not how convincing the message looks.

Warning signs that deserve a deliberate pause

Use these signals to decide when to stop and verify rather than to declare a listing fake based on one odd detail:

  • An unexpected recruiter says you are an unusually perfect match and pushes you to respond immediately.
  • The person uses a personal email address, a free mailbox, or a domain that differs from the employer’s genuine website.
  • The advertisement uses a real company’s identity but cannot be found on that company’s independently located careers page.
  • An official-looking logo, interview invitation, offer letter, or other branded document is used to support a request for money.
  • You are asked to pay for equipment, training, certification, processing, or another condition of employment, including through a payment app.
  • You are told to deposit a check and return an alleged overpayment or equipment allowance.
  • A form requests your Social Security number, bank details, or identity documents before the company and hiring stage have been verified.

These signs call for a pause, not panic. Some legitimate employers use outside recruiters, third-party application software, or remote interviews. The question is whether the relationship and the next step can be confirmed through a channel you found independently.

What “independent confirmation” actually means

Independent confirmation is more than clicking a second link in the same message. Start from a source you locate yourself: the employer’s main website, its careers page, or contact details published there. Compare the exact job title, location, duties, and application method. Then ask the employer whether the recruiter and opening are genuine, using the independently published phone number or contact form.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not let a matching logo, familiar wording, or a profile that appears polished substitute for this check. The Federal Trade Commission notes that impersonators can use convincing materials and personal email addresses. A scammer can also copy an old, legitimate advertisement and alter it. The safest evidence is a current vacancy and a recruiter relationship that the employer itself can confirm.

Keep the checks separate from the suspicious contact. Do not reply to the questionable email asking whether its own link is safe, and do not use a phone number shown only in the listing. If the employer cannot confirm the role, leave the process unverified and do not provide money or sensitive information.

Platform-specific checks

LinkedIn

For a LinkedIn listing or InMail message, inspect the recruiter’s profile and company affiliation, then compare the email domain and website links with the employer’s genuine details. LinkedIn’s safety guidance recommends trusted application methods such as LinkedIn Jobs or the company’s official careers page, but the presence of a posting on LinkedIn is still not a guarantee.

Prefer an application route you reach independently. If a message redirects you to a form on an unfamiliar domain, leave the message and locate the vacancy through the employer’s site instead. Use LinkedIn’s reporting controls for job spam, scams, or impersonation when the evidence does not line up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Indeed

For Indeed, verify the employer outside the listing and pay particular attention to the timing of requests for Social Security or bank information. Do not assume that an application form is safe merely because it is embedded in a familiar service; confirm who receives the data and why it is needed.

Compare the title, location, and duties with the employer’s own posting. If the company has no matching role, contact it using independently published details before providing documents or continuing the conversation. Report a suspicious listing through Indeed’s available reporting process.

Other job boards and career platforms

The same method applies to specialist boards, aggregators, staffing sites, and social networks. A smaller or less familiar service may link to an employer impersonation just as a large platform can. Verify the legal employer, recruiter, domain, application route, and payment or data requests independently.

Be careful with listings that redirect through several websites, insist on moving immediately to an encrypted chat or messaging app, or cannot explain which organization will employ you. A legitimate employer may use outside recruiting software, but you should still be able to confirm the relationship through the employer’s official channels.

How to judge timing during a real hiring process

Legitimate hiring can involve personal information, references, work authorization documents, background checks, or payroll details. The safety question is not whether an employer will ever request those items; it is whether the request arrives after you have verified the employer and reached a plausible stage of the process.

Before submitting anything sensitive, confirm the company independently, identify the person handling your application, and make sure the form or portal belongs to a trusted channel. If the request is unexpected, ask the company’s independently located contact point to explain it. Do not let urgency replace verification. A claim that your offer will disappear within minutes is a pressure tactic, not proof that the process is genuine.

Common scenarios and the correct response

A copied advertisement with a different application link

You find a familiar company name and job description on a board, but the button sends you to a domain that the company’s website never mentions. Stop at the board, locate the employer’s careers page yourself, and apply only through the route you can verify. If the role is absent, contact the employer independently and report the listing if appropriate.

A recruiter who seems unusually enthusiastic

An unexpected message says you are a perfect match and asks for a quick response. Enthusiasm is not proof of a scam, but it should not shorten your checks. Review the profile, verify the employment claim and email domain, and confirm the opening on the employer’s site before sharing anything beyond basic application information.

An offer letter followed by an equipment invoice

Professional branding and a signed-looking document do not change the rule that applicants should not pay to get hired. Do not send money, buy equipment from a specified source, or deposit and return a check. Preserve the documents, end the conversation, and report the listing and suspected fraud.

An early request for bank details

If bank information arrives before you have independently confirmed the company and reached a verified hiring stage, do not complete the form. Contact the employer through its official website and ask whether the request is genuine and necessary now. A request that cannot survive this independent check is a reason to disengage.

Questions readers commonly ask

Is every job missing from the company website a scam?

Not necessarily. A legitimate posting may have closed, been updated, or been distributed by an outside recruiter. However, the absence of a matching role means you should pause. Contact the employer through details found independently and ask whether the vacancy and recruiter are authorized. Until the company confirms them, do not pay, send sensitive information, or use an unverified application link.

Can a real recruiter use Gmail or another personal email account?

It can happen, but a personal mailbox is a warning sign because it is harder to connect to the employer. Compare the address with the company’s genuine domain and ask the employer to verify the person through an official channel. Do not treat a professional signature, logo, or offer document as proof that the address is legitimate.

What if the listing is on LinkedIn or Indeed?

The platform can be useful for finding opportunities, but its presence is not a guarantee. Verify the exact role on the employer’s own careers page, confirm the recruiter and domain, and use a trusted application route. Report the listing if the evidence does not line up.

When is it reasonable to provide bank or Social Security information?

Such information may be needed at a legitimate, verified stage of hiring, such as payroll or required employment processing. Do not provide it merely because a listing or unexpected message asks. First confirm the legal employer, the person handling your application, the reason for the request, and the trusted portal or form receiving the data.

Why is depositing an employer’s check dangerous?

A counterfeit check can appear credited before the bank discovers the problem. If you send part of the money to the recruiter or a supposed vendor, you may be responsible when the check is reversed. Never return an alleged overpayment or equipment allowance from a check connected to a job offer.

What should I save before reporting?

Keep the listing URL, recruiter profile, message history, email headers, application links, invoices, payment instructions, and screenshots. Content may disappear after you report it, so preserve original messages where possible. Use the platform’s reporting tool and submit suspected fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

A practical pre-application checklist

Run through this list before clicking submit or continuing a recruiter conversation:

  1. Locate the employer’s official website without using the suspicious message as your source.
  2. Find the exact vacancy and compare its title, location, duties, and application method.
  3. Check the recruiter’s profile and corroborate the company connection independently.
  4. Compare every email and website domain with the employer’s genuine published details.
  5. Confirm that the process uses a trusted application route.
  6. Refuse requests to pay for equipment, training, fees, or any other condition of employment.
  7. Never deposit a check and send back an alleged overpayment.
  8. Delay Social Security, bank, and other sensitive information until the employer and hiring stage are verified.
  9. Save evidence and report suspicious listings or messages to the platform and suspected fraud to the FTC.

If the opportunity cannot be independently confirmed, treat it as unverified and do not proceed. The cost of waiting for confirmation is small compared with sending money or identity information to an impersonator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a job listing on LinkedIn or Indeed automatically legitimate?

No. Scammers can copy genuine advertisements and alter the contact or application details. Verify the exact vacancy on the employer’s independently located careers page.

What is the strongest first check?

Find the employer’s official website yourself and compare the title, location, duties, and application method. Contact the company through details published there if anything differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I ever pay for equipment or training to get hired?

Do not pay an alleged employer to obtain a job. Be especially cautious about invoices, payment-app transfers, specified equipment sellers, or requests to return money from a check.

When should I refuse to provide Social Security or bank information?

Pause when the request arrives before the employer, recruiter, and hiring stage are independently verified. Confirm why the information is needed and use only a trusted company channel.

Where can I report a suspected job scam?

Use the job board’s reporting feature. For suspected fraud, submit a report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and preserve the listing and messages.

The Bottom Line

Use LinkedIn, Indeed, and other boards to discover opportunities—not to prove them. Independently confirm the employer and exact vacancy, verify the recruiter and domain, refuse upfront payments and fake-check schemes, delay sensitive information until a verified hiring stage, and report listings that do not withstand those checks.
