Stop and verify before you transfer anything. A cryptocurrency opportunity is probably a scam if it promises guaranteed or unusually high returns, claims there is little or no risk, arrives through an unsolicited message, or pressures you to act immediately. Treat a polished website, app balance, celebrity endorsement, testimonial, or supposed regulatory certificate as unverified until you check the person, company, domain, registration and withdrawal rules independently.
Crypto transfers are usually difficult to reverse. The safest decision is to pause before paying, preserve the evidence, and obtain independent confirmation from a regulator or financial institution—not from the person selling the opportunity.

The fastest way to identify a likely crypto investment scam
Use this rule: guaranteed returns plus urgency equals stop. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says only scammers guarantee profits or big returns, and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) says there is no such thing as a guaranteed return on investment. A legitimate investment can lose money and should give you time to understand the risks.
| Signal | What it usually means | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| “Risk-free,” guaranteed, or unusually large returns | The promoter is removing normal investment risk from the story to make you send money. | Stop. Do not deposit, connect a wallet, or share identity documents. |
| Pressure to act today, keep the opportunity secret, or use a special link | Urgency prevents independent checks and gives the fraudster control. | End the conversation and verify through sources you find yourself. |
| An unsolicited pitch from a dating contact, friend, group member, celebrity or “expert” | Trust may have been engineered before the investment request. | Assume the contact may be impersonated or part of a scripted operation. |
| A website or app shows profits but requires a tax, penalty, unlock fee or additional deposit to withdraw | The displayed balance is likely fictitious; the new payment is an advance-fee demand. | Send nothing else. Save screenshots and report the fraud. |
| Payment must be made in cryptocurrency to protect money or solve a government, bank or business problem | Legitimate agencies do not demand crypto payments for refunds, investigations or account protection. | Contact the institution through a phone number or website you locate independently. |
One warning sign alone deserves caution. Several together should be treated as a failed safety check, not as a reason to negotiate.

How cryptocurrency investment scams are built
1. The relationship comes before the investment
According to the FBI, criminals commonly begin on dating apps, social networks, professional networks or encrypted messaging services. They may chat for weeks, share personal stories, offer emotional support, or present themselves as successful traders. A group chat can create the appearance that many ordinary people are earning money. This relationship-building is social engineering: the goal is to make a later financial instruction feel like advice from someone you trust.
An unsolicited contact is not proof of fraud by itself, but an investment pitch from someone who contacted you unexpectedly is a major risk signal. Do not let romance, friendship, membership in an online community or admiration for a public figure replace verification.
2. The promoter moves you to a controlled platform
The contact may direct you to a site or app with a convincing logo, customer-support chat, market charts and an account dashboard. The FBI describes schemes in which victims see fictitious profits after making an initial deposit. The operator controls the interface and can display any number it wants; a rising balance is not evidence that trades occurred or that funds are held for you.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. A withdrawal becomes a new payment request
When you try to withdraw, the platform may claim that you owe taxes, a compliance deposit, a penalty, an insurance charge or an account-unlock fee. Some operators allow a small early withdrawal to build confidence, then demand much larger payments. Paying one fee does not resolve the problem; it confirms that you will keep paying. A real tax authority does not collect an investment platform’s alleged tax in cryptocurrency, and a genuine custodian does not require an endless series of deposits to release your own balance.

4. Recovery fraud follows the original loss
After a victim complains publicly or reports a loss, another person may claim to be a lawyer, investigator, government agent or blockchain-recovery specialist. The FBI warns that recovery fraudsters can demand an upfront fee, add more fees, or falsely claim government affiliation. Private companies cannot issue seizure orders. A promise of guaranteed recovery is a second scam signal.
Why a professional-looking opportunity proves nothing
Fraudsters can copy a legitimate company’s colors, registration number, address, staff photographs and legal language. They can manufacture testimonials, screenshots, transaction histories and customer-support conversations. A claim that a platform is registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is not verification; the promoter may be using a real company’s identity or inventing a certificate.
Check the identity independently. Type the company name, person’s name and domain into a search engine yourself rather than using a link in a message. Search each with terms such as review, scam, fraud and complaint. Search the exact domain and distinctive phrases from the website. Reverse-search profile photographs when possible. Look for warnings, copied text, recently created domains, mismatched addresses and complaints describing the same withdrawal demand.

A person not found in the relevant register is not automatically a criminal, but the absence means you have not verified the claimed status and should not send money.

Eight checks to complete before sending money
- Pause the conversation. Do not click the supplied deposit link, install an unknown app, connect a wallet or share a one-time code while you investigate. Tell the promoter you need time; a legitimate opportunity can survive a delay.
- Write down exactly what is being promised. Record the return percentage, time period, claimed strategy, minimum deposit, fees, custody arrangement and withdrawal conditions. Vague language such as “guaranteed,” “no downside,” “insider access” or “AI never loses” is a reason to stop.
- Verify the person and company separately. Search the legal name, trading name, phone number, email address, social handle and physical address. Compare the contact details with independently published records. Do not assume that a matching name belongs to the person messaging you.
- Verify the domain and app. Type the address yourself, inspect the spelling and search the domain without using the promoter’s links. Look for an independently documented operating history, clear ownership, support channels and published risk disclosures. A site that appeared recently or has no verifiable history deserves no deposit.
- Check registration and disciplinary information. Use Investor.gov or the appropriate regulator’s own search tools. Navigate to the regulator’s site independently. Treat a supplied “SEC registration” link as advertising until the regulator’s search confirms the exact legal entity and people.
- Examine custody and withdrawal rules. Identify who holds the assets, whether you control the private keys, which blockchain addresses receive deposits, how withdrawals are requested, how long they take and what fees apply. If the answers are hidden, change after you deposit, or require another deposit before a withdrawal, do not proceed.
- Check the payment destination. Confirm the wallet address character by character on a trusted device. A request to send crypto to a personal wallet, a constantly changing address, a mixing service, a gift card, or an account unrelated to the named company is a critical warning. Cryptocurrency transfers are generally irreversible.
- Get an independent second opinion. Ask a financially knowledgeable person who is not connected to the promoter. Do not rely on a group moderator, paid influencer, “account manager” or customer-support agent supplied by the opportunity. If you cannot explain how the investment makes money and how you exit, you are not ready to fund it.
Never send a “test” amount to prove that a platform works. Scammers may permit a small withdrawal precisely to persuade you to send a larger sum.
How to compare two crypto opportunities without being misled
Compare verifiable facts, not screenshots or projected returns. If either opportunity fails a check, pause both until the missing information is independently established.
| Comparison question | What a safer opportunity should provide | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Who is responsible? | A legal entity, named officers and contact details that match independent records. | Only aliases, anonymous administrators or identities that cannot be confirmed. |
| Is the claimed registration real? | The exact entity and relevant professionals appear in the regulator’s own database. | A badge, certificate or link supplied only by the promoter. |
| How long has the business operated? | Consistent, independently documented history and transparent changes in ownership. | A new domain, copied history or no credible record outside its own channels. |
| Who controls the assets? | Written custody terms, identifiable wallets or custodians, and a documented withdrawal process. | A dashboard balance without evidence of custody or a demand for extra money to withdraw. |
| Are risks disclosed? | Clear possibility of losing some or all of the investment, with no guarantee. | “Risk-free,” guaranteed, fixed or unusually high returns. |
| How are payments made? | A transparent, correctly named recipient and a process you can verify before signing. | Crypto sent to a personal address, an unknown intermediary or a supposedly protected account. |
| How did you hear about it? | You initiated contact after independent research. | An unsolicited message, romance contact, group invitation or celebrity endorsement. |
| What happens if you say no? | You can leave without retaliation or escalating pressure. | Countdowns, secrecy demands, threats, guilt or repeated calls. |
Common claims and the questions they should trigger
“The algorithm cannot lose.”
Ask for independently audited performance, the exact risks, the legal entity operating the strategy and evidence that you—not the promoter—control withdrawals. No trading algorithm eliminates market, execution, custody or fraud risk.

“The government is protecting your account.”
Do not send crypto to protect funds, fix an account, pay a fine or assist an investigation. Contact the alleged agency using contact details found on its official website or a statement you already possess, not the number in the message.
“Your profits are visible in the app.”
A number on a screen is not a withdrawal. Ask whether you can withdraw to a wallet you control without any additional payment. If the answer is no, stop communicating through the app and preserve the evidence.
“A famous person endorsed it.”
Celebrity images and deepfake videos are easy to copy. Verify the endorsement on the person’s long-established, authenticated channels and still perform every identity, registration and withdrawal check. An endorsement does not guarantee an investment.
Practical safeguards for a legitimate crypto transaction
- Use a device with current security updates and a screen you trust when confirming a wallet address.
- Do not share a seed phrase, private key, password, two-factor authentication code or remote-access session. No legitimate support agent needs your private key.
- Read the transaction’s network and asset type carefully. Sending one token over the wrong network can cause permanent loss even when no scam is involved.
- Keep a written record of the recipient address, asset, network, amount, date and time before signing.
- Separate investment funds from money needed for rent, food, debt payments or emergencies. Never borrow under pressure to meet a deposit deadline.
- Be skeptical of group chats that show only winning trades. Losses can be hidden, fabricated results can be posted by multiple controlled accounts, and dissenters may be removed.
If you already sent cryptocurrency
Do not send another payment. An additional tax, penalty, verification deposit or recovery fee will not make the original transfer reversible. Act quickly to preserve evidence and limit further access.
Best Value
- Stop contact and protect accounts. Do not argue with the operator or click new links. Change passwords from a clean device, enable two-factor authentication, revoke suspicious wallet approvals where your wallet supports that function, and contact your legitimate exchange or bank through its independently verified support channel.
- Preserve transaction evidence. Save the transaction hash or transaction ID, sending and receiving wallet addresses, blockchain network, cryptocurrency type, amount, date and time. Keep the original messages, emails, usernames, phone numbers, domains, app names, payment instructions and screenshots. Do not crop screenshots so tightly that dates or account identifiers disappear.
- Record the timeline. Write when the contact began, what was promised, every deposit, every withdrawal attempt and each demand for a fee or tax. Include the name and location the person claimed, even if you suspect it was false.
- Report through trusted channels. File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the FTC using websites you locate independently. Contact relevant financial institutions and local law enforcement. Provide the evidence package and transaction hashes; do not send additional funds to any reporting service.
- Warn the platform or community. If the scam used a social network, dating service, exchange or app store, report the account and preserve its profile information first. Removing a profile can make later identification harder if you did not save the details.
Reporting cannot guarantee that funds will be recovered, but prompt, complete records give investigators and the receiving service the best chance to identify the destination and prevent additional victims.
How to avoid a second loss through “recovery” services
Be especially cautious after posting about the loss. Fraudsters monitor complaints and contact victims with inside knowledge of the transaction. They may claim that they recovered your coins, that a court has frozen the scammer’s assets, or that you must pay a processing, customs, tax or legal fee first.
- A private company cannot issue a government seizure order or compel an exchange to release funds.
- A person who guarantees recovery, requests cryptocurrency upfront or asks for remote access to your wallet is not offering a verifiable remedy.
- Do not provide your seed phrase, private key, password or identity documents to an unsolicited “investigator.”
- Use the official reporting channels already listed and consult a qualified attorney only after independently checking the attorney’s license and contact information.
What the official figures show about the scale of the problem
These figures describe reported losses, not every incident. They show why a persuasive story or small initial success should not override basic checks:
| Source and date | Reported figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| FTC, 2021 | Nearly 7,000 reports and more than $80 million in losses since October 2020 | Bogus cryptocurrency investment reports received by the FTC. |
| FTC, 2021 | $35 million | Reported investment-scam losses in cryptocurrency among people in their 20s and 30s. |
| FBI IC3, 2023 | More than $2 billion | Victims defrauded in cryptocurrency investment schemes during 2022. |
| FTC consumer alert, 2024 | $4.6 billion | Reported investment-scam losses during 2023; this figure includes investment scams broadly, not only cryptocurrency. |
Reporting totals understate harm because many victims do not report, and categories can overlap. Use the numbers as a reason to verify, not as a prediction of what any particular investment will do.
A printable stop-or-proceed decision
Proceed only when every answer below is independently documented and you are comfortable losing the money:
- Do I know the legal identity of the person and business?
- Did I find and verify the registration through the regulator’s own search, rather than a promoter-supplied link?
- Is the return clearly exposed to loss, with no guarantee or “risk-free” wording?
- Can I explain who holds the asset and how I withdraw without paying another deposit?
- Did I initiate the research rather than respond to an unsolicited pitch?
- Have I checked the domain, company, person and token independently for complaints and impersonation?
- Am I sending to a verifiable recipient and using the correct asset and network?
- Would I still proceed if I waited 48 hours and discussed it with someone independent?
A single unanswered question is enough to pause. You do not need to prove a scam before refusing to send money; the promoter bears the burden of earning trust.
