If the Xbox app is taking a long time to open or its pages load slowly on a Windows PC, use this order: restart Windows, check the connection, install Xbox app and Windows updates, run Repair for the app, then try Reset only if Repair fails. If Microsoft Store itself is stuck, run wsreset.exe. This sequence separates common Windows, Store, network and local-app problems without starting with destructive changes.
Use this troubleshooting order first
Work through the steps in order and test the Xbox app after each one. Stop when loading returns to normal; there is no benefit in resetting app data after a restart or update has already solved the problem.

- Restart Windows. A restart clears temporary state and applies some pending system changes.
- Check the connection. If pages fail intermittently or load much more slowly than other apps, compare the app on a stable wired connection when one is available.
- Update the Xbox app from Microsoft Store and install available Windows updates.
- Repair the Xbox app in Windows Settings, if Windows offers that option.
- Reset the Xbox app only after Repair has failed. Resetting can remove local app data or settings; the exact effect on Xbox app data is not established here.
- Run
wsreset.exewhen Microsoft Store itself is not opening, is stuck, or cannot complete updates. This is a Store remedy, not a guaranteed fix for every Xbox loading problem.
Do not begin by changing Windows services or the registry. The official material identifies Configuration Service as a service used by apps including Xbox, but does not document restarting, reinstalling or modifying that service as a supported solution for slow loading.
What “slow” tells you—and what it does not
The same symptom can come from different layers of Windows. An Xbox app that opens quickly but cannot populate pages points you toward connection or service availability. An app that never reaches its window points more toward the local app, Microsoft Store infrastructure or Windows state. These are useful clues, not a diagnosis: the available official guidance does not provide a measured loading-time threshold, a success rate for Repair or Reset, or an Xbox-specific cause-and-effect test.

| Observed behavior | First checks | What the check can establish |
|---|---|---|
| The app is slow to start after the PC has been running for a long time or after updates were downloaded. | Restart Windows, then check Windows Update. | Whether temporary Windows state or a pending update was involved. |
| The app opens, but images, store pages or account content appear slowly or intermittently. | Compare the connection, preferably with a stable wired connection if available; then check for updates. | Whether the symptom changes with the network path. A cable or different connection is not guaranteed to fix an app defect. |
| The Xbox app and other Store apps fail to update, or Microsoft Store itself hangs. | Update from the Store Library; if the Store remains stuck, run wsreset.exe. |
Whether the Store layer, rather than only the Xbox app, needs attention. |
| The Xbox app remains slow after restart, a connection check and updates. | Use Windows Settings > the app’s Advanced options > Repair, then Reset only if needed. | Whether Windows can repair or reinitialize the app through its supported app-management controls. |
1. Restart Windows before changing app data
Choose Start > Power > Restart, wait for Windows to return to the desktop, and open the Xbox app again. Microsoft troubleshooting guidance lists restarting as a basic first step, especially when the computer has been running for a long time or has pending updates.
A restart is deliberately low risk: it does not remove the Xbox app’s local data or alter its settings. If Windows presents an update-and-restart option, allow the update to complete, sign in again and test the app before proceeding. Record what changed—whether the app opens, whether a particular page remains slow and whether other Store apps behave normally—because that observation determines the next branch.
2. Check whether the connection is contributing to the delay
Xbox pages need a working internet connection to retrieve account and catalog information. First compare the Xbox app with another internet-dependent service on the same PC. If several services are slow or fail intermittently, the connection is a stronger suspect than an Xbox-only app fault.

Compare a different connection safely
- Close downloads, streaming sessions and other high-bandwidth activity on the PC.
- Open the Xbox app and note whether it is slow to start, slow to sign in, or slow only when a page is loading.
- If a wired connection is available, connect the PC to the network and repeat the same test. A wired comparison is an isolation step, not a promise that changing cables will speed up the app.
- Return to the original connection and compare the behavior again if practical. A change that appears only on one connection points to network stability or routing, while identical behavior on both connections points back toward Windows, Store or the app.
Do not buy an accessory solely on the expectation that it will accelerate the Xbox app. The evidence supports using a wired connection only as an optional diagnostic comparison; it does not establish a guaranteed performance improvement.
3. Install Xbox app and Windows updates
Out-of-date Store components can leave an app waiting on an update or interacting with an older Windows build. Check both update channels instead of assuming that updating one updates the other.
Update the Xbox app in Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Select Library. Depending on the current Store layout, the update control may be labeled Get updates or appear as an update action for individual apps.
- Install an available update for the Xbox app and let it finish before launching Xbox.
- Open the Xbox app and test the page or action that was slow.
Microsoft’s transaction-troubleshooting guidance documents updating the Xbox app on PC through the Store. If the Store cannot complete this step, treat that as a Store problem and continue to the Store reset section rather than repeatedly clicking the Xbox app.

Install Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install what Windows offers, and restart if requested.
- After the restart, open Microsoft Store and verify the Xbox app is current, then test the Xbox app.
Windows Update supports updates for Store apps as part of the broader Windows update process, but the Store Library remains the direct place to check the Xbox app itself.

4. Repair the Xbox app without deleting its local data
Windows provides a Repair action for some apps. Repair is the preferred app-level step because it attempts recovery without the more disruptive effects that can accompany Reset. Not every app exposes Advanced options or Repair, so the absence of the control is not an error in your procedure.
Windows 11 path
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox in the list. Use the app’s three-dot menu if Windows shows one, then choose Advanced options.
- Under the Reset section, select Repair.
- Wait for Windows to finish, reopen Xbox and test the same screen that was slow.
Windows 10 path
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Xbox, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for completion, and test the app.
The Xbox entry may be absent, may use a slightly different display name, or may not provide Advanced options. Microsoft states that these controls are not available for every app. If Repair is unavailable, continue with the update and Store checks; do not substitute unsupported service or registry changes.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
5. Use Reset only when Repair does not resolve the problem
If the Xbox app is still slow after Repair, return to the same Advanced options page and select Reset. Windows presents a confirmation before proceeding.
Reset is a later recovery step because it can reset local app data or settings. The general Windows guidance establishes the Reset action, but it does not specify exactly which Xbox-specific data, sign-in state or preferences will be affected. Save or note any settings you would need to re-enter, and make sure you know the Microsoft account credentials required to sign in again before confirming.

- Close the Xbox app.
- Open the Xbox app’s Advanced options using the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path above.
- Select Reset and confirm the prompt.
- Wait for Windows to finish, launch Xbox, and sign in if requested.
- Test loading before changing anything else.
If Reset does not help, the result is useful evidence: the problem is less likely to be fixed by repeating the same app-data operation. Recheck Store and Windows updates, verify the connection, and document whether other Store apps show the same behavior before seeking account- or service-specific support.

6. Fix a Microsoft Store problem with wsreset.exe
Use this step when Microsoft Store itself is stuck, closes unexpectedly, or cannot complete app updates. It is not a universal Xbox app speed command.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
wsreset.exeexactly and press Enter. - A blank command window opens. Microsoft says it closes after about ten seconds, after which Microsoft Store opens.
- In Store, open Library and check for Xbox app updates.
- Launch Xbox and test the slow page again.
Do not interpret the blank window as a failure while it is running. If Microsoft Store does not open afterward, the Store issue remains unresolved; return to the Windows Update and connection checks rather than claiming that the Xbox app itself has been repaired.
Choose the next branch based on what changed
| Result after testing | Most useful next action | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Restart fixes the delay. | Continue normal use and install any pending updates that Windows or Store still shows. | That the network or app data was defective. |
| Only a different connection changes the behavior. | Investigate connection stability and use the wired comparison as evidence when describing the problem. | That an Ethernet cable permanently speeds up Xbox. |
| Store updates fail for multiple apps. | Run wsreset.exe, then revisit Store Library. |
That resetting Xbox alone can repair Microsoft Store. |
| Repair fixes Xbox. | Keep the repaired installation and monitor it after the next launch. | That Reset is still necessary. |
| Reset changes sign-in or local settings but does not fix loading. | Recheck updates and network behavior, then seek support with the exact symptoms and steps already tried. | That a second Reset or service manipulation is a documented solution. |
| Nothing changes after every supported step. | Report whether the issue affects startup, sign-in, a specific page or all Store apps, and include your Windows version and update status. | That the available guidance proves a single Xbox-specific cause. |
Configuration Service: why it appears in guidance but is not a speed fix
Microsoft identifies Configuration Service as a service used by apps including the Xbox app. That relationship does not establish that stopping, restarting, reinstalling or changing the service will fix slow loading. The official material available for this problem does not document a supported Configuration Service recovery procedure for Xbox performance.
For that reason, leave service and registry manipulation out of the normal troubleshooting sequence. Such changes can introduce a new Windows problem while providing no verified benefit. Use the documented restart, update, Repair, Reset and Store-cache steps first, and describe the remaining symptom to Microsoft support if they do not resolve it.
What this process can and cannot promise
- It can move from low-risk checks to progressively more disruptive app recovery without immediately deleting local data.
- It can separate a Store-wide failure from a problem limited to the Xbox app.
- It can show whether changing the network path changes the symptom.
- It cannot provide a guaranteed loading time, repair success rate or number of seconds saved; no such measurement is established in the official material for this issue.
- It cannot establish the exact Xbox-specific consequences of Reset beyond the general warning that local app data or settings may be reset.
- It does not validate Gaming Services, registry edits or Configuration Service manipulation as fixes for slow Xbox loading.
When to stop troubleshooting and ask for support
Escalate after you have recorded the Windows edition, whether Store updates complete, whether the problem affects other Store apps, which connection was used, and whether Repair or Reset changed anything. Describe the exact stage that is slow—startup, sign-in, navigation or a particular page—rather than only saying that “Xbox is slow.” That information distinguishes a local app symptom from a broader Store or network problem without requiring you to make an unsupported diagnosis.
The practical stopping point is simple: once restart, connection checks, updates, Repair, and (if necessary) Reset and wsreset.exe have been tested in the relevant branch, repeating them is unlikely to add information. Keep the result of each test and use it to guide the next support conversation.
